In this work experimental transition probabilities, line strengths, and atomic oscillator strengths of 30 spectral lines corresponding to the 2p53p → 2p53s transitions array of neon have been deduced using a neon-filled hollow cathode lamp in conjunction with two spectrographs covering the wavelength region from 500 to 1000 nm. The experimental absolute transition probabilities have been determined using the relative intensity method and lifetimes of the excited states. The transition probabilities have been converted to the line strengths data and used for testing the J-file sum rule. Relative line strengths of all the lines have been computed to determine the oscillator strength values. The measured transition probabilities, oscillator strengths, and relative line strengths agree well with the previously reported data.

Three rotational transitions of the CS molecule were observed toward the negative longitude half of the molecular disk which orbits about the galactic center between radii of 2 and 10 pc. A comparison of the relative line strengths allows a determination of the radial run of density in the circumnuclear disk. In order to observe all of the transitions with a similar beamsize, the two lower frequency transitions were measured with the IRAM 30-m telescope, and the highest frequency transition with the NRAO 12-m. Table I lists the observing parameters.

Image tube spectra of emission regions in M31 have been studied to determine relative line strengths and abundances. Lines of H, He, [NII], [SII], [Oi], [Oii], [Oiii] are observed. The analysis indicates: (1) that there are ions whose line strengths, relative to Hα, are a function of the position of the emission region in M31; (2) abundance differences or different excitation mechanisms exist in regions separated by only a few hundred parsecs.

Computer-aided measurement of absorption line strengths from high resolution spectra greatly improves the accuracies to which relative line strengths can be determined. This article describes a computer program written for interactive use on a Prime minicomputer to fit simultaneously absorption line positions, strengths, linewidths, and continuum parameters. Application to the methane spectrum indicates that relative line strengths have been measured with accuracies of 2% or better for single isolated absorptions. Line strengths from the Q branches of the ν4 and ν1 + ν4 bands of methane are reported and compared to calculated values given in the 1980 Air Force Geophysical Laboratory (AFGL) Compilation of Molecular Parameters.
