Abstract I assemble 4684 star-forming early-type galaxies (ETGs) and 2011 composite ETGs (located in the composite region on the BPT diagram) from the catalog of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 MPA-JHU emission-line measurements. I compare the properties of both ETG samples and investigate their compositions, stellar masses, specific star formation rates (sSFRs), and excitation mechanisms. Compared with star-forming ETGs, composite ETGs have higher stellar mass and lower sSFR. In the stellar mass and u − r color diagram, more than 60% of star-forming ETGs and composite ETGs are located in the green valley, showing that the two ETG samples may have experienced star formation and that ∼17% of star-forming ETGs lie in the blue cloud, while ∼30% of composite ETGs lie in the red sequence. In the [N II]/Hα versus EWHα (the Hα equivalent width) diagram, all star-forming ETGs and most of the composite ETGs are located in the star-forming galaxy region, and composite ETGs have lower EWHα than their counterparts. We show the relations between 12+log(O/H) and log(N/O) for both ETG samples, and suggest that nitrogen production of some star-forming ETGs can be explained by the evolution scheme of Coziol et al., while the prodution of composite ETGs may be a consequence of the inflowing of metal-poor gas and these more evolved massive galaxies.

Output-only Modal Analysis makes it possible to investigate the dynamic behaviour of machine tools, especially under process conditions. The differences between standstill and process state, which are important to be considered, result from process damping, gyroscopic moments of the rotating spindle, and changes in preloads and clearance in bearing and joints. Output-only Modal Analysis assumes a complete excitation of the structure by white noise characteristics. There are several mechanisms in a machine tool under process conditions that could cause a vibration response. Besides the cutting process itself, the movement of the NC-axes, as well as rotating fans of the control system and auxiliary units, can be excitation sources. This paper investigates to what extent several excitation mechanisms in machine tools fulfill the analysis assumption and in which way the identified modal parameters depend on the boundary conditions of the excitation characteristics.

The accurate description of acoustic emission signals produced by the localized fault of a rolling element bearing plays an important role in its feature extraction and analysis. This paper analyzes the excitation mechanisms and develops the analytical model of acoustic emission signals produced when the rolling element bearing passes across the localized fault on the inner or outer race. Based on the analytical model, the spectral characteristics are discussed substantially. Simulations and experiments are carried out to validate the efficacy of the model developed in the paper. The experimental results show that the response signal thus produced has two parts. The first one is produced by the entry of the rolling element bearing, while the other is produced by the departure of the rolling element bearing. The energy of both parts is concentrated around the resonance frequency of the acoustic emission transducer. Generally, the interval of adjacent acoustic emission events is not equivalent to each other and the corresponding spectrum is continuous in the high frequency band.

Xe SHI irradiation of InGaN/GaN MQWs leads to surface damage and intermixing at the interfaces. The introduced defects cause a strong quenching of the luminescence as well as a change in the excitation mechanisms.

This work describes development of a comprehensive methodology for analyzing vibro-acoustic and wear mechanisms in transmission systems. The thesis addresses certain gaps present in the fields of structure dynamics and abrasion mechanism and opens new areas for further research. The paper attempts to understand new and relatively unexplored challenges like influences of wear on the dynamics of drive train. It also focuses on developing new techniques for analyzing the vibration and acoustic behavior of the drive unit structures and surrounding fluids respectively. The developed methodology meets the requirements of both the complete system and component level modeling by using specially identified combination of different simulation techniques. Based on the created template model, a three-stage spur plus helical gearbox is constructed and simulated as an application example. In addition to the internal mechanical excitation mechanisms, the transmission model also includes the rotational and translational dynamics of the gears, shafts and bearings. It is followed by illustration of wear among the rotating components. Different kinds of static and dynamic analyses are performed and coupled at various levels depending on the mechanical complexities involved. Furthermore, the structure dynamic vibration of the housing and the associated sound particle radiations are mapped into the surrounding fluid. Additionally, the approach for selection of the potential parameters for optimization is depicted. Final part focuses on the measurements of different system states used for validation of the model. In the end, results obtained from both simulations and experiments are analyzed and assessed for there respective performances.
