A survey has been conducted in grade XI natural science of senior high school, at odd semester, academic year 2016/2017 in Samarinda, Indonesia. The focus of this research are to determine the students’ ethnicities, and the responses of biology teachers about students' critical thinking skills, and Problem-Based Learning. Sampling technique was total sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire. Data was analysed by techniques used descriptive. The results of the data analysis show that the compositions of students’ ethnics are: Java (12.7%), Bugis (6.9%), Kutai (13.3%), Banjar (13.3%), and other ethnics (28.5%). Most of the teachers (86.0%) who already understood about the learning approaches, said that they already understood, while the remaining 14% did not understand the patterns of Problem-Based Learning. In addition, 23.3% teachers said that students were less able to explain, express opinions, and make conclusions; 76.7% said that students are sufficiently able to explain, express opinions, and make conclusions. Future research related to biology learning in multiethnic students needs to be conducted to get more information. The design of learning tools needs to consider the ethnic of the students in strengthening critical thinking skills. Similar research needs to be done to obtain more information. The findings of this research are the students’ ethnicities of the XI class of Natural Sciences, as well as the responses of high school biology teachers about students' critical thinking skills in Biology.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to obtain 1) the understanding of teachers related to Group Investigation-based biology learning tools and critical thinking skills, 2) description of students' ability in critical thinking, 3) solutions to solve teacher and student problems related to group invetigation-based learning. Understanding of teachers and students obtained by interview and questionnaire is analyzed descriptively qualitative. The result of this research are: 1) the understanding of biology teacher related to biology learning device based on group investigation is still less so less optimal learning process, 2) biology teacher still experiencing difficulties in developing learning device so that require socialization, 3) critical thinking of student in learning still less , 4) the need for direction and guidance to develop learning tools. The sample observations in this analysis were teachers and students at SMAN 6 PPU. The results showed that 78.15% of teachers experienced difficulties in developing learning tools. Teacher states that the students in the class less critical thinking by 70.10%.
Keyword:

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on the critical thinking skills of 7th-grade students of SMP Negeri 34 Bandarlampung (Public Senior High School 34 Bandarlampung). This quasi-experiment involved 2 groups of students, totaling 28 students for the Experimental class and 26 students for the Control class. Data collection was obtained by using an essay test instrument which was presented in the pretest and posttest. Based on the research results, it is known that the posttest results of the experimental class are 78.82, and the results of the control class are 74.07. The data were then analyzed by independent sample t-test and obtained tcount (2.213) greater than ttable (2.007). The effectiveness of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model was tested with the effect size test, the results showed a number of 0.2 with a low category. So, it can be concluded that the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model has an effect on increasing students’ critical thinking skills but with low effectiveness.

This research is aimed to develop learning device of Guided Discovery model with PhET simulation to trill students critical thinking skill. This research uses 4D development model and tested on 15 students of class XII IPA with test design using one group pretest-posttest design. Learning tools developed include: (a) syllabus (b) RPP, (c) student books, (d) LKS, and (e) tests students' critical thinking skills. Research data obtained through validation method, observation, test, and questionnaire. The results are analyzed descriptively quantitative and qualitative. The students' critical thinking ability is analyzed by n-gain. The result of the research shows that (a) learning device developed categorized is very valid, (b) learning activity is done very well, (c) critical thinking ability of students have moderate improvement, and (d) students respond very positively to learning which has been implemented. Based on the results of the analysis and discussion, it was concluded that the learning device of Guided Discovery with PhET simulation model developed is feasible to be used for trained critical thinking skills of high school students.

Critical thinking is the ability to think rationally and reflectively about what must be done or believed. This skill allows one to make logical decisions based on information obtained and processed according to ability. The development of critical thinking skills in learning is essential because they enable students to deal effectively with social, scientific, and practical problems. Therefore, this research aimed to describe the effectivity of problem-based learning to improve students’ critical thinking skills to deal with hoax information in chemistry. This research was carried out through the control and experimental groups. Data were collected from 60 the 11th-grade students of the State High School in Lampung Province, Indonesia, and analyzed by using SPSS version 23.0. The effectivity of problem-based learning was measured based on the n-gain. The n-gain value of experimental and control classes was 0.709 (high) and 0.322 (medium), respectively. The results indicated that problem-based learning has facilitated and effective to improve students’ critical thinking skills.
