Bean rust caused by Uromyces appendiculatus (Pers.) Unger is an important disease in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) worldwide. To our knowledge this is the first report of a new race of U. appendiculatus (19-63) in Puerto Rico and in the western hemisphere. Accepted for publication 4 February 2009. Published 25 March 2009.

Ozone insensitivity was assessed by three methods (visual rating, leakage of amino acids, and leakage of total electrolytes from leaf discs), and related to the levels of lipid-soluble antioxidants and superoxide dismutase activity in the primary leaves of different ages and of different cultivars of Phaseolus vulgaris L. The most sensitive indicator of ozone injury was visual rating. The increased variability associated with measurements of amino acid or total electrolyte leakage masked differences among cultivars which could be detected by visual rating. The correlations among the three measures of injury were high. Ozone tolerance of the primary leaf decreased between 8 and 18 days after planting and varied significantly among the 10 cultivars tested. Similarly, significant differences in lipid-soluble antioxidant content and superoxide dismutase activity were measured, but a correlation with ozone insensitivity was not established. Exposure to 20 pphm ozone for 24 h induced higher quantities of lipid-soluble antioxidant in the susceptible cv. Seafarer but not in the tolerant cv. Goldcrop. Superoxide dismutase increased similarly in both cultivars. The physiological mechanism of ozone insensitivity in the primary leaves of these cultivars of P. vulgaris was not shown to involve increased levels of lipid-soluble antioxidants or superoxide dismutase.

The varieties (64) of common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were evaluated for resistance to bean rust in the Velasco zone, at the north of the Holguín province, Cuba. The evaluation was made 60 days after sowing by determining the degree of attack using a scale as well as estimating the number of pu stules per leaf and no remarkable differences between both methods were found. The character of the pustules was also determined by measuring their diameters with regard to three categories large (more than 0.5 mm) middling (between 0.3 and 0.5 mm) and small (less than 0.3 mm) and the presence or lack of chlorotic halo surrounding the pustules as well. The cultivars that resulted less attacked by the bean rust were Guira-35, XAN-43, Revolución-79, M-112, Rosas, BAT-202, Tazumal, Huetar, Bolita-42, BAT-1281, BAT-1274, BAT-1280, PV-555, BAT 1275, Engañador, Guamá- 23, MCD-254, Chevere, XAN-93, XAN-147, NAG-20, NAG-55, RAB-30 and CC 25-9-S (R), all of which showed an average equal or inferior to 10 pustules per leaf, being these ones generally smaller and without any chlorosis.

We studied leaf and pod reactions of 18 Phaseolus vulgaris germplasm lines (three temperate and 15 tropical) to four Xanthomonas campestris pv. phaseoli (XCP) (Smith) Dye strains and seven Uromyces appendiculatus (UA) (Pers.) Unger races. Line × XCP interaction was significant for leaf and pod reactions. The common bean lines XAN-159, BAC-6, and XAN-112 had the best combined leaf and pod resistance to XCP. Line × UA race interactions were significant (P = 0.05). Lines IAPAR-14 and BAC-6 had the best combined resistance to XCP and UA.

In the Velasco zone, Holguín province, Cuba, losses in yield due to the bean rust were valued on the varieties ICA- Pijao, Velasco Largo and Bonita 11 in four sowing times between 1987 and 1989. A randomized block design with three replicates was used. The considered treatments were the aforesaid three varieties of common bean, sprayed with fungicides and unprotected. The used chemical was oxycarboxin, sprayed five times at 0.75 kg a.i. 1 ha with a 10 days frecuency, beginning 15 days after sowing. It was concluded that bean rust might cause shortages in yield reaching 28-54%, 8-33% and 13-29% on the varieties ICA- Pijao, Velasco Largo and Bonita 11 respectively as well as a decrease on the average number of pods per plant and also the weight of the seeds.
