Abstract: The seahorse Hippocampus patagonicus (Teleostei: Syngnathidae) is the southernmost occurring species of its genus in the South Atlantic Ocean. Its distribution seems to be restricted to the Southwestern Atlantic, along the coasts of Argentina and Brazil. Herein we report the incidental capture of six individuals as bycatch in the shrimp trawl fishery off the coast of Paraná, southern Brazil. Additional information on the geographic distribution of H. patagonicus, together with its ecology and life history, is important for conservation of this threatened species. These data can promote the development of appropriate management and conservation strategies for populations along the Brazilian coast.

Two of the species of Pectinariidae previously reported from the Brazilian coast are herein described, together with a new species and also new record for the genus Petta Malmgren, 1866 for the southern Atlantic. Amphictene catharinensis (Grube, 1870) was described from material from off Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, but the most recent description for these animals comes from Nilsson (1928); a redescription for A. catharinensis is herein provided. Pectinaria nonatoi n. sp. was informally described as P. (Pectinaria) laelia nomen nudum in an unpublished thesis and a formal description has never been provided, although the species has been reported from several other localities off the Brazilian shoreline, mostly in ecological studies; the species is formally described herein and compared to the most similar congeners. Petta alissoni n. sp. is also described and compared to the most similar congeners and this is the first record for animals of this genus from southern Atlantic. There are also records for Pectinaria gouldii (Verrill, 1874) and P. regalis Verrill, 1901 from off the Brazilian coast, and a doubtful record for Lagis pseudokoreni (Day, 1955), but we did not find any material belonging to those taxa.

The ctenophore fauna of Brazilian coast is poorly known. Only one planktonic species, Mnemiopsis leidyi, was previously recorded for the southeastern coast. The present study describes and gives some biological notes of this and four other species (Beroe ovata, Bolinopsis vitrea, Leucothea multicornis, and Ocyropsis crystallina) that occur in the area, two of which (B. vitrea and L. multicornis) are new records for the subtropical southwestern Atlantic.

The present study reviews the taxonomy of the marine gastropods belonging to the family Eulimidae Philippi, 1853 from the continental slope off Northeast Brazil. The genera Abyssoaclis Barros, Mello, Barros, Lima, Santos, Cabral & Padovan, 2003 and Aclis Lovén, 1846 were not treated here. A total of 20 taxa were identified in this region, excluding Eulima hebes Watson, 1883, a species with a doubtful classification in Eulimidae. The species were assigned to the following genera: Costaclis Bartsch, 1947, Eulima Risso, 1826, Fusceulima Laseron, 1955, Melanella Bowdich, 1822, Ophieulima Warén & Sibuet, 1981, Sticteulima Laseron, 1955, Thaleia Warén, 1979, and Umbilibalcis Bouchet & Warén, 1986. The genera Sticteulima, Ophieulima and Umbilibalcis are reported for the first time in the southwestern Atlantic. Four species represent new records for the southwestern Atlantic. A redescription of the shell morphology is provided for: Costaclis egregia (Dall, 1889b), Melanella doederleini (Brusina, 1886), and Umbilibalcis lata (Dall, 1889b). Additional information to the original description are reported for other species. Melanella sarissa is considered as a synonym of Melanella cinca Dall, 1927. Six new species are described: Eulima cracentis sp. nov., Melanella paraabida sp. nov., M. adiastalta sp. nov., M. anapetes sp. nov., Sticteulima cabrali sp. nov. and S. canopusensis sp. nov. Lectotypes are designated for: Costaclis hyalina, C. egregia, Eulima ephamilla (Watson, 1883), E. psila and E. (?) hebes. Eulima sp. 1, Melanella sp. 1 and Melanella sp. 2 are potential new species, but the scarcity of material precludes a formal description at this moment.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the feeding habits allowing the occurrence of the congeneric species Stellifer rastrifer and Stellifer brasiensis, collected on a seasonal basis, in the operating area of the artisanal seabob-shrimp trawl fishery in Porto Belo, an important fishing area on the southern Brazilian coast. Fish were collected seasonally from November 2009 to August 2010, in isobaths of 10, 20 and 30m. Of the 450 stomachs analyzed, 194 belongd to Stellifer rastrifer and 242 to Stellifer brasiliensis. From the totality of analyzed stomachs 33.49% were empty and 66.52% had some content. Crustacea were the predominant food category in the diet of S. rastrifer and S. brasiliensis, and the shrimp Acetes americanus was the most frequent crustacean in stomachs of both studied species. The overlapping in the diet of the species was high, however when analyzing the overlap in each season it was found that it occurred only during spring and winter. Although the most important items in the diet of these species are the same, the intake of each alternates in time, suggesting a difference in predation pressure, which leads to less direct competition in a given time.

The Brazilian expeditions Revizee and Oceanprof collected samples from the southwest Brazilian coast between depths of 200 and 2200m. These expeditions sampled eleven species ofOplophoridae, ten of them new records for Southwestern Atlantic: Oplophorus gracilirostris A. Milne Edwards, 1881; O. spinosus (Brullé, 1839); Acanthephyra eximia A Milne Edwards, 1881; A. acutifrons Bate, 1888; A. quadrispinosa Kemp, 1939; A. stylorostratis (Bate, 1888); Ephyrina benedicti Smith, 1885; Janicella spinicauda (A. Milne Edwards, 1883); Notostomus elegans A. Milne Edwards, 1881; Systellaspis debilis (A. Milne Edwards, 1881) and S. pellucida (Filhol, 1885). The specimens are described and figured.

Abstract The determination of the period of parturition and identification of nursery areas are fundamental for the management and conservation of a fishing resource. Through combination of monthly abundance, length measurements, and development time of embryos we inferred about parturition time of the Blacktip sharks, Carcharhinus limbatus, from Southwestern Atlantic. Specimens of C. limbatus were caught from 2002 and 2008 by artisanal fleets from three different locations along the Brazilian coast using gillnets (mesh width ranging between 30 and 120 mm between opposite knots and operating from 9 to 120 m in depth), handlines (19 to 140 m depth) and longlines (6 to 90 m depth). Through a comparative analysis of fisheries landing data collected, we have verified neonatal (< 90 cm) catch peaks at specific times of the year in different locations and, matching with birth prediction of embryos, propose that C. limbatuspresents a well-defined parturition time in late spring-early summer in Southwestern Atlantic. Moreover, we indicate supposed nursery grounds for the species along the Brazilian coast. This information will be crucial for stock assessments of the species and may serve as a basis for determining fisheries management measures.

This paper reports the occurrence of four deep waters shrimps of the family Solenoceridae in the southwestern Atlantic, Brazil. The rare Hadropenaeus modestus is collected for the second time from Brazilian waters after 138 years, filling the gaps on its distributional pattern. Mesopenaeus tropicalis is a new register for Potiguar basin, although it is common along Brazilian coast. Hymenopenaeus chacei and H. laevis are recorded for the first time in southwestern Atlantic. The records of these species in the southwestern Atlantic are an important advancement to raise the knowledge of the deep-sea shrimps.

Abstract Herein, we provide new occurrence records of Scinax nasicus (Cope, 1862) for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil. All new records here provide are located on Southern half of the state. Besides this, we provide the first record for species in Brazilian coastal zone. Those records improve considerably our knowledge regarding species distribution in Southern Brazil.

Nudibranch molluscs constitute a group of marine gastropods little studied in most of the Brazilian coast extension. Up to date, only ten species are known from Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. This work presents four new records of nudibranchs from this region: Aeolidiella indica Bergh, 1988; Berghia rissodominguezi Muniain and Ortea, 1999; Chromodoris paulomarcioi Domínguez, García and Troncoso, 2006 and Tambja stegosauriformis Pola, Cervera, and Gosliner, 2005, expanding the known geographic distribution of the last two species more than 900 km southward.

This work provides new information on agelasid sponges found on the continental shelf off northern Brazil. Agelas sceptrum (Lamarck, 1815) and Agelas wiedenmayeri Alcolado, 1984 have their first record for the Brazilian coast. Agelas dispar Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864 and Agelas schmidti Wilson, 1902, previously recorded from Brazil, are cited for the first time off the mouth of the Amazon River.
