Recently, the predominantly Amazonian amphisbaenian species Amphisbaena fuliginosa was reported from the Cerrado biome, where its distribution is presently restricted to three localities in Goiás state and one in Minas Gerais state. Here we present new data on its distribution range in the Cerrado biome, a new record in the state of Minas Gerais and the southernmost record for the species, extending its southern distribution limit by 35 km.

Records of the freshwater hidrozoan Craspedacusta sowerbii remain scarce to Brazil. This note reports the occurrence C. sowerbii in an artificial limestone lake, at Prados, Minas Gerais, representing the second record of the species in the state over the last 72 years.

We present a new record of the Crested Eagle, Morphnus guianensis (Daudin, 1800), a rare forest eagle of the Neotropics on 22 May 2012 at a Cerrado area in Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil. The species has only two historical records in the state, both at areas formerly covered by Atlantic Forest. The finding raises the expectations for the maintenance of the species in the state, stressing the fact that this is the first species record in a Cerrado area in Eastern Brazilian states.

We report a new record of Scinax canastrensis from central region of Minas Gerais state. This record represents a range extension of ca. 175 km northeast from the type-locality, at Parque Nacional Serra da Canastra, and the third register of this species in Minas Gerais.

Pseudoryzomys simplex (Winge, 1887) is a widely distributed rodent in South America, yet it is difficult to capture. In Brazil, it occurs in open areas such as the Chaco, Cerrado, and Caatinga. In the present study, using analyses of owl pellets, we extend the distribution of this species by more than 400 km to southeastern Minas Gerais state, Brazil. This is the first record in the state from the Atlantic Forest and the first record from the municipality of Carangola, which has a Semidecidual Seasonal Forest phytophysiognomy.

There are few studies on Odonata communities in Brazil, even in its most deeply studied states, such as Minas Gerais. Therefore, it is proposed the presentation of results on the Odonata species richness of Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca (Ibitipoca State Park), located at the Zona da Mata region in the Minas Gerais state, Brazil. This Conservation Unit is considered a priority area for the conservation of the state’s invertebrates. The objective of this study was to know the number of species within the area. 100 hours of sampling were carried out, distributed amongst five campaigns of four consecutive days between  November 2016 and July 2017. There were recorded 20 different species, including a new record for the state and one potential new species. Species richness was low due to the sampling being focused exclusively on lotic systems, and also to the environment’s homogeneity. Despite the low number of species, Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca is relevant to the conservation of the Minas Gerais state’s Odonata.

Leptodactylus sertanejo is a mid-sized frog that inhabits areas of the Cerrado Biome, in natural and artificial grassland areas, in the states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Bahia, Goiás and Tocantins, Brazil. Herein, we provide the first species record for the state of Maranhão, northeastern Brazil, expanding the known distribution of L. sertanejo ca. 420 km northeast from the Parque Estadual do Jalapão, Tocantins state.

Abstract SARS-CoV-2 has spread rapidly around the world, with Brazil currently considered an epicenter of the pandemic. The northern region of the country has the highest incidence and mortality rates. This study aimed to investigate information about the evolutionary history of epidemic spread and genetic aspects of strains isolated on the Western Amazon, in the State of Rondônia, Brazil. It was possible to detect a total of 22 mutations. Some of these alterations may possibly be related to effects on transmissibility, the fidelity of RNA replication, the ability of cancer patients to respond to infection, beyond a mutation that emerged after the introduction of SARS-CoV-2 in Rondônia. At least two events of introduction were detected, corresponding to the B.1 and B.1.1 European lineages. An introduction was observed possibly through Argentina, where strains originated that circulated in the Minas Gerais and Ceará Brazilian states, prior to Rondônia (B.1.), as well as through the Minas Gerais state and the Federal District, which gave rise to strains that spread to Rondônia, from the capital to more rural parts of the state (B.1.1.). The findings show the need to monitor the genetic epidemiology of COVID-19, in order to surveil the virus’s evolution, dispersion and diversity.

Abstract The importance of continuously conducting botanical inventories has been questioned in recent decades, generating a lack of investment and interest in this area. However, several applied studies are only possible after obtaining the primary data from such surveys. Despite having the greatest richness of plants known in Brazil, several areas with knowledge gaps remain in Minas Gerais (MG) state. This is the case for the Serra da Mantiqueira, an important area for biodiversity conservation in the country. In this scenario, the phytophysiognomy of Seasonal Semi-deciduous Forest (SSF) deserves attention, as it is broadly distributed and has great relevance in the state, although subsampled. Therefore, this study aimed to present records of species for the flora of MG and discuss the need for floristic surveys in Brazil. These species were recorded in three of 10 studied remnants along expeditions performed between the years of 2012 and 2019 as part of a wide study performed in SSF remnants in the Serra da Mantiqueira which have a deficit of floristic data. Three species are recorded for the first time in MG, one species was rediscovered after more than two centuries from the last collection (which represents its nomenclatural type), in addition to nine other species which must be considered rare in the state. This study contributed to filling gaps in knowledge on Brazilian flora and also demonstrated the relevance of continuing new collections, mainly in specific subsampled areas in the interior of the country such as in SSF remnants.

During a floristic survey of Melastomataceae carried out in Delfinópolis and Capitólio, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, a new species of Fritzschia was found. Fritzschia furnensis has stems peeling in thin, woody flakes, petiole 2–10 mm long, large leaf blades (23–38 × 10–29 mm) and an indumentum of glandular trichomes on the branches, petioles, leaves, bracteoles, pedicels, hypanthia, and sepals. The new species is regarded as endangered (EN) due to a restricted distribution, small populations and the destruction of its habitat.
