AbstractYBO3:5% Eu3+ co-doped with some ns2-type ions were synthesized by solid-state reaction and their luminescence properties under ultraviolet (UV) and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) region were investigated. The results indicated that in the excitation spectrum of YBO3:5%Eu3+, the strong charge transfer (CT) band of Eu3+ was located in the UV region and the absorption band of the host lattice lay in the VUV region. When the ns2-type ions, such as Sn2+ and Sb3+(n=5), Tl+, Pb2+ and Bi3+(n=6) were co-doped into the host lattice of YBO3:5%Eu3+, the CTS band of Eu3+ was shifted. The intensity of the host lattice absorption band was improved with the incorporation of Tl+, Pb2+ or Bi3+, while decreased with Sn2+ or Sb3+. These luminescent phenomena were analyzed in detail and possible reasons were given.

Zinc silicate-based (Zn2SiO4:Eu3+) long afterglow phosphors were produced by solid state reaction method. The effects of borax and Eu2O3 additive on the properties of fabricated products have been studied. The results show that, there is not much difference in phase compositions within the borax additive amount; however, their SEM morphologies are different. Borax additive can increase the grain size of the product. Some sintering phenomena could be observed in the sample with Eu2O3 addition. The fluorescence spectroscopy results indicate that, the emission peak of the sample with Eu3+ additive located at 612nm, which may be a good candidate for red phosphor applications. The luminescent mechanism of Zn2SiO4:Eu3+ is also discussed.

SrY2O4:Eu3+ phosphors were synthesized by both the solid-state reaction method and the sol-gel method, and their photoluminescence in vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) and the ultraviolet (UV) region were evaluated. The excitation spectra of SrY2O4:Eu3+ phosphors prepared by solid-state reaction show another excitation band centered at 324 nm except for the charge-transfer bands (CTB) of Eu3+ when monitored at 610 nm, and a blue emission band around 406 nm is observed when excited at 324 nm, which could be associated with defects. Both the excitation and emission bands mentioned above disappear when the samples were prepared by the sol-gel method. SrY1.98O4:0.02Eu3+ phosphors synthesized by the sol-gel method exhibit a higher emission intensity under 147 nm excitation compared with solid-state reaction technology. The main reason could be that the samples prepared by the solution-based route have more regular and uniform morphologies.

Powder of Pr-doped CaTiO3 red phosphor was prepared at 1473 K by a conventional solid-state reaction method with addition of B2O3 or SiO2 as a flux. Primary particle sizes of the prepared samples were increased by using B2O3 flux but decreased by using SiO2 flux. Clear planes, edges, or steps were observed on surfaces of the primary particles. The intensity of photoluminescence induced by irradiation of light with a wavelength longer than ∼350 nm was enhanced about three times by using B2O3 flux. The intensity of photoluminescence induced by irradiation of light with a wavelength shorter than ∼350 nm was enhanced about twice by using either B2O3 or SiO2 fluxes. The origin for the flux effects is discussed.
