NECROTIZING ENTEROCOLITIS (NEC) is a common and life-threatening gastrointestinal (GI) emergency in the low birth weight infant.1,2 Characterized by necrosis, which often leads to perforation of the GI tract, NEC can be a deadly disease.3 According to Israel, NEC is a disease of the immature intestinal mucosal barrier in the premature population.4
