In Portugal, news shows that the impact of COVID-19 in the hospitality sector was more noticeable compared to other sectors. This chapter aims to understand the historical trends of hotel industry financial leverage and to analyse the impact of macroeconomic factors on it. Based on the Portuguese reality, it aims to propose a model to be used by managers and shareholders to control the effect of financial leverage over their companies. Two issues are supporting this study: one is if companies evaluate the impact of the chosen financing sources on shareholders' return; another is to understand whether there is a change in the financial leverage effect, either due to macroeconomic factors or due to cyclical factors not controlled by the market, such as the current pandemic (COVID-19) which demands new challenges to companies. Results highlight that the perception of financial leverage by hotel managers is crucial in crisis situations, as the current case of the pandemic caused by COVID-19.

The size of international trade continues to extend rapidly from day to day as a result of the globalization process. This situation causes an increase in the economic activities of businesses in the trading area. One of the main objectives of the cost system applied in businesses is to be able to monitor the competitors and the changes that can be occured as a result of the developments in the sector. Thus, making cost accounting that is proper according to IAS / IFRS and tax legislation has become one of the strategic targets of the companies in most countries. In this respect, businesses should form their cost and pricing systems according to new regulations. Transfer pricing practice is usefull in setting the most proper price for goods that are subject to the transaction, in evaluating the performance of the responsibility centers of business, and in determining if the inter-departmental pricing system is consistent with targets of the business. The taxing powers of different countries and also the taxing powers of different institutions in a country did not overlap. Because of this reason, bringing new regulations to the tax system has become essential. The transfer pricing practice that has been incorporated into the Turkish Tax System is one of the these regulations. The transfer pricing practice which includes national and international transactions has been included in the Corporate Tax Law and Income Tax Law. The aim of this study is to analyse the impact of goods and services transfer that will occur between departments of businesses on the responsibility center and business performance, and also the impact of transfer pricing practice on the business performance on the basis of tax-related matters. As a result of the study, it can be said that transfer pricing practice has an impact on business performance in terms of both price and tax-related matters.

Farmers have benefited from unique tax treatment since the beginning of the income tax law. This paper explores agricultural influences on the passage of the income tax in 1913, using both qualitative and quantitative analysis. The results show that agricultural interests were influential in the development and passage of tax/tariff laws. The percentage of congressmen with agricultural ties explains the strong affection for agriculture. Discussion in congressional debates and in agricultural journals was passionate and patriotic in support of equity for farmers. The quantitative analysis reveals that the percentage farm population was a significant predictor of passage of the 16th Amendment by the states and of adoption of state income taxes in the 20th century.

This study examines the impact of a regional bank merger in Japan on borrowing by small businesses, focusing on firms that borrow from the acquiring bank, the acquired bank, or both. First, we find that post-merger borrowing costs declined. This result suggests that small borrowers enjoy more favorable post-merger financing conditions because efficiencies from economies of scale lead to lower costs. Second, we<strong> </strong>find that post-merger borrowing costs decline for firms that borrow only from the acquiring or acquired bank, whereas they did not decline for firms that borrow from both. Third, we find that only small business loans to firms that borrow from both the acquiring and acquired banks decrease post-merger. This result suggests that small business lending might decline because of a merged bank’s loan portfolio and lending strategy.

The article examines the impact of regulatory changes in the tax on dividends on the payout policy of Indian companies. The tax law was recently amended to levy tax on dividends received by large shareholders. As the promoters group is the largest shareholder, this is expected to have a negative impact on the payout policy of companies. Furthermore, companies with larger promoter holdings have a higher motivation to reduce their payout. The study covers 370 companies present in the BSE 500 Index and compares the dividend payout of the companies before and after the introduction of tax levy. The study finds that the newly introduced tax indeed caused a shift in the dividend policy of companies, particularly those companies which have high levels of inside ownership. The findings have significant implications for companies, investors and the government.

On December 22, 2017, President Donald Trump signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), the most sweeping revision of US tax law since the Tax Reform Act of 1986. The law introduced many significant changes. However, perhaps none was as important as the changes in the treatment of traditional “C” corporations—those corporations subject to a separate corporate income tax. Beginning in 2018, the federal corporate tax rate fell from 35 percent to 21 percent, some investment qualified for immediate deduction as an expense, and multinational corporations faced a substantially modified treatment of their activities. This paper seeks to evaluate the impact of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act to understand its effects on resource allocation and distribution. It compares US corporate tax rates to other countries before the 2017 tax law, and describes ways in which the US corporate sector has evolved that are especially relevant to tax policy. The discussion then turns the main changes of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 for the corporate income tax. A range of estimates suggests that the law is likely to contribute to increased US capital investment and, through that, an increase in US wages. The magnitude of these increases is extremely difficult to predict. Indeed, the public debate about the benefits of the new corporate tax provisions enacted (and the alternatives not adopted) has highlighted the limitations of standard approaches in distributional analysis to assigning corporate tax burdens.


Recent studies show that volatility-managed equity portfolios realize higher Sharpe ratios than portfolios with a constant notional exposure. The authors show that this result only holds for risk assets, such as equity and credit, and they link this finding to the so-called leverage effect for those assets. In contrast, for bonds, currencies, and commodities, the impact of volatility targeting on the Sharpe ratio is negligible. However, the impact of volatility targeting goes beyond the Sharpe ratio: It reduces the likelihood of extreme returns across all asset classes. Particularly relevant for investors, left-tail events tend to be less severe because they typically occur at times of elevated volatility, when a target-volatility portfolio has a relatively small notional exposure. We also consider the popular 60–40 equity–bond balanced portfolio and an equity–bond–credit–commodity risk parity portfolio. Volatility scaling at both the asset and portfolio level improves Sharpe ratios and reduces the likelihood of tail events.

Controlling the investment activities of company representatives helps to avoid inefficient investment activities. Shareholders will face with risks if manager’s decisions which not bring benefits to shareholders (according to agency theory). Studying the influence of corporate governance on investment has an important role in controlling investment activities of enterprises. Therefore, the authors analyze the impact of corporate governance on investment of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam from 2014 to 2018. With data collected from 480 small and medium enterprises in Vietnam. The results show that state-owned enterprises tend to invest less than non-state enterprises. Companies with manager is board chair and manager hold shares will make investing more. Revenue growth and financial leverage have a positive impact on investment. From the results of this study, the authors also make some recommendations to help control investment activities in the enterprise through corporate governance characteristics.
