Abstract: We investigate the effect of a family-based primary health care program (Healthly Early Childhood Program) on infant mortality in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We estimate infant mortality’s counterfactual trajectories using the differences-in-differences approach, combined with the use of longitudinal data for all municipalities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Our main result is that the program reduced the number of deaths caused by external causes. The length of exposure to the program seems to potentiate the effects. For the number of deaths by general causes, there is no evidence of impact. Our findings are consistent with the nature of the program that aims to improve adults care with children. The Healthly Early Childhood Program is effective in reducing the number of avoidable deaths in infants.

The presence of vegetable gardens in schools is increasingly uncommon due to the great ease and practicality of the use of industrialized products to feed students, which causes the devaluation of natural foods and the growing disinterest of children for using vegetables in food. However, the use of vegetables is of great importance for the nutritional development of children who are growing. Therefore, with the present work, the objective was to implement gardens in schools of Early Childhood, Elementar School and High School. During the year 2017 the project was developed in four schools in different locations in Novo Cabrais, Cachoeira do Sul and Santiago, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. An informative lecture was held dealing with information about the preparation of the gardens and importance of the consumption of healthy foods. At the end of the development of the project, it was possible to observe how satisfactory and relevant it was for each of the students, regardless of age, to help planting the seedlings, to observe the growth and development of each plan.

Terrestrial Isopods were sampled in four protected Atlantic Forest areas located in Serra do Mar, state of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. A total of 2,217 individuals of six species (Atlantoscia sp., Benthana werneri, Pseudodiploexochus tabularis, Pudeoniscus obscurus, Styloniscus spinosus and Trichorhina sp.) were captured in pitfall traps. The exotic species S. spinosus is recorded for the first time for the Americas. Another introduced species, P. tabularis, previously recorded only from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, had its geographic distribution extended to the state of São Paulo. The most abundant isopods in this study belong to an undescribed species of Atlantoscia.
