This research was to investigate the potential of biogas production from the co- digestion of canteen wastewater and food waste. Batch experiments were carried out under various substrate ratios1 : 1 : 0, 1 : 1 : 1, 1 : 1 : 2, 1 : 2 : 1, 2 : 1 : 1, 2 : 2 : 1, 3 : 2 : 1, 4 : 2 : 1, 6 : 5 : 1, 8 : 5 : 1, 10 : 3 : 1, 10 : 4 : 1 and 10 : 5 : 1 (canteen wastewater : swine manure : food residue waste) at room temperature. The biogas production was carried for a retention period of 7 days to investigate suitable mixing ratio. The suitable ratio was tested in a plastic container 200 liter with bath and fed-batch experiment for a retention period of 45 days. The results revealed that fermentation slurry mixing ratio of 1 : 2 : 1 was found to be optimum, which gave the methane production with composition 47.34-61 %CH4. The biogas yield and thermal energy were 88.86 L/day and 69 kcal respectively.These primary results indicated the significance of co-digestion of canteen wastewater with food waste for biodegradation and biogas production.

Manure production on grower/finisher swine operations in the United States was examined using data from 184 grower/finisher swine operations that participated in the United States National Animal Health Monitoring System's 1995 National Swine Study. Two methods were used: one, assuming that pigs produced 8.4% of their body weight in manure each day; another using the difference between feed fed and weight gained as a proxy variable to study manure production. Using this latter approach, a production function was developed. The function exhibited diminishing returns to scale when food waste was not fed to pigs, but constant returns to scale when food waste was included in their diets. The difference between feed fed and weight gained was lower on operations that restricted entry to employees only.

Biogas is the product of anaerobic vitiation of biodegradable matter. This paper focuses on the need of alternative and green sources of energy at a household level and how biogas produced from the everyday organic waste has the potential and possibility to replace LPG cylinders at houses, shops etc. and empower us to step towards an eco-friendly future. The purpose this small-scale experiment has been to find the perfect input matter that is easy to acquire and which produces the maximum amount of gas from minimum input and within small period of waste retention. Four different types of input waste material containing different quantities of cow dung and kitchen food waste were studied through individual experimental setups. Waste was mixed and kept at room temperature and the pH and total solid concentration of the samples were recorded on regular intervals. From the experiment it was found that the optimum yield of biogas at a small scale, based on the parameters such as retention period, pH and total solid con-centration can be obtained by the use of food waste form households and kitchens. The exact composition has been discussed in this paper. The energy generated by the small-scale generator has also been compared to that of an LPG cylinder and an LPG replacement model has also been presented.
