ABSTRACT A recent floristic survey of Rhodophyta from Ceará State, Brazil (02º46'30''-07º52'15''S and 37º14'54''-41º24'45''W), revealed the occurrence of 113 species distributed into 14 orders, 28 families and 63 genera. Of these, 18 species belonging to seven orders are new records; some of them poorly described and illustrated in the literature or cited only checklists. Therefore, aiming to expand the taxonomic knowledge about these poorly known species, we present detailed descriptions, illustrations, and comments on related taxa. The occurrence of Ceratodictyon scoparium is confirmed for the South Atlantic coast. The male gametophytes of Dohrniella antillarum var. brasiliensis and tetrasporophytes of Gracilariopsis silvana are illustrated for the first time. Ceramium fujianum is a new addition to northeastern Brazil. Among the new records, Callithamnion corymbosum, Ceramium clarionense, C. fujianum and C. scoparium showed a significant expansion of their geographic distribution along the Brazilian coast. Most of the newly recorded species are filamentous, small-sized or tufted algae, highlighting the need for new collections to detect the presence of these components.

An updated and reviewed checklist of coastal fishes of the Rio Grande do Norte state, northeastern coast of Brazil, is presented. Between 2003 and 2013 the occurrence of fish species were recorded through collection of specimens, landing records of the artisanal fleet, literature reviews and from specimens deposited in ichthyological collections. A total of 459 species from 2 classes, 26 orders, 102 families and 264 genera is listed, with 83 species (18% of the total number) recorded for the first time in the study area. Additionally, Halichoeres radiatus, Lachnolaimus maximus and Canthigaster james­tyleri are reported for the first time in the Brazilian coast and nine other species have their geographic distribution extended.

We report for the first time Trilepida fuliginosa (Passos, Caramaschi & Pinto, 2006) and Drepanoides anomalus (Jan, 1863) in the state of Maranhão, Brazil. Our record for T. fuliginosa represents the northernmost locality for the species and extends its geographic distribution by nearly 662 km (in a straight line) from São Geraldo do Araguaia, state of Pará. Our record for D. anomalus is the easternmost known occurrence and extends its distribution by 203 km from Piçarra, Pará. Updated distribution maps and images of preserved specimens are provided.

Potimirim potimirim (Müller, 1881), a species of coastal freshwater shrimp, is recorded for the first time from the state of Rio Grande do Norte, northeastern of Brazil, where it was collected in a small tributary of the Potengi River. This record extends the distribution of this species about 220 km north along Brazilian coast. New records, such as this, reinforce the need for greater research efforts in the northeastern freshwater ecosystems of Brazil to provide better understand the region’s biodiversity and establish better parameters for conservation actions.

AbstractCucullanus bagre Petter, 1974 (Cucullanidae) is redescribed based on the examination of newly collected material and the revaluation of type specimens, using light and for the first time scanning electron microscopy. Parasite specimens were collected from the intestine of the coco sea catfish Bagre bagre (Linnaeus) (Ariidae) off the South Atlantic coast, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Detailed morphological analysis revealed the presence of an unpaired papilla just anterior to the cloacal protrusion in male, that was overlooked in the original description. Descriptions of the adult female and eggs are provided for the first time; these gravid specimens have the general morphometry quite similar to that of juveniles. Additionally, detailed description and illustration of sclerotized plates present on the oesophastome is provided. The far posterior location of the excretory pore with thick-walled excretory duct, the conspicuous protrusions present on both anal and cloacal regions and the number and arrangement of caudal papillae in males are considered to be important diagnostic features for C. bagre. All the specimens from type material were together in one vial and not separated in two vials as stated in the original description, making it impossible to determine which is the holotype, allotype or paratypes. This is the first report of C. bagre in Brazil, which expands its geographical distribution to South Atlantic waters.

During the austral winter of 2008, thousands of penguins traveled to low latitudes along the South Atlantic coast of South America. The atmospheric and oceanic conditions from April to July 2008 may account for the penguins' unusual geographic distribution. During that period, South Atlantic coastal waters were cooler; the wind anomalies had northward and onshore components; the ocean's coastal region presented northward currents that favored the penguins to travel toward lower latitudes. This anomalous climate regime resulted from extreme meteorological frontal systems that occurred mainly during June 2008. Three consecutive extreme midlatitude cyclones produced strong wind shear that resulted in the northward oceanic flow along the South American eastern shoreline favoring the penguins to be spotted in northern tropical waters.

<p style="text-align: justify;">O caranguejo do gênero <em>Acanthocarpus</em> Stimpson, 1871 tem hábitos bentônicos, ocorrendo na plataforma continental em substratos de cascalhos ou lamosos com ocorrência em todos os oceanos, especialmente entre 20-522 m de profundidade. Neste trabalho, nós reportamos a ocorrência de <em>Acanthocarpus alexandri</em> Stimpson, 1871 e <em>A. bispinosus</em> A. Milne-Edwards, 1880 para a Bacia Potiguar (Rio Grande do Norte), localizada na região nordeste do Brasil e aumentamos o conhecimento sobre aspectos distribucionais das espécies para a costa brasileira.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Palavras chave</strong>: Bacia Potiguar, registros adicionais, distribuição geográfica, caranguejos braquiúros, plataforma continental.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Abstract</strong>: The gladiator box crab of the genus <em>Acanthocarpus</em> Stimpson, 1871 has benthonic habits, occurring in continental shelf on gravel or muddy substrates with occurrence in all oceans, especially between 20-522 m depth. In this paper we report the occurrence of <em>Acanthocarpus alexandri</em> Stimpson, 1871 and <em>A. bispinosus</em> A. Milne-Edwards, 1880 from the Potiguar Basin (Rio Grande do Norte), located in the Brazilian northeast and increase the knowledge about the distributional aspects of this species from Brazilian coast.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Key words</strong>: Potiguar Basin, further records, geographic distribution, brachyuran crabs, continental shelf.</p>

Twenty-one Sotalia guianensis (van Bénéden, 1864) and one Steno bredanensis (Lesson, 1828) stranded on Brazilian coast were necropsied. Two species of Nasitrema (Trematoda: Brachycladiidae) Ozaki, 1935, were identified in the respiratory tract of the dolphins. Nasitrema atenuatta (Neiland, Rice and Holden, 1970) was found in S. guianensis (prevalence 28.7%, mean intensity 4.66 and mean abundance 1.33) and S. bredanensis (mean intensity and mean abundance six helminths). Nasitrema globicephalae (Neiland, Rice and Holden, 1970) was only found in S. bredanensis, with an infection intensity of 14 helminths. Nasitrema atenuatta and N. globicephalae are reported for the first time in South Atlantic.

This work deals with haplosclerid sponges off the coast of Maranhão State, northeastern coast of Brazilian shelf (southwestern Atlantic). A new species is described, Haliclona (Halichoclona) lernerae. Four species are recorded for the first time for the Brazilian coast: Amphimedon caribica (Pulitzer-Finali, 1986); Niphates lutea Lehnert & Van Soest, 1999; Neopetrosia subtriangularis (Duchassaing, 1850) and Petrosia (Petrosia) weinbergi Van Soest, 1980. Three species were recollected from the southwestern Atlantic and have their geographic distribution extended on the Brazilian coast: Callyspongia (Cladochalina) vaginalis (Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864), Oceanapia bartschi (De Laubenfels, 1934) and Xestospongia muta (Schmidt, 1870). Two species were collected for the first time from the Maranhão State Coast: Niphates erecta Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864 and Neopetrosia proxima (Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864). A taxonomic study of those samples is given, including description, illustrations and geographic distribution.

The present paper aims to investigate the relative sea-level and the coastal evolution during the Holocene in the Rio de Janeiro coastline, based on geological and biological indicators. Using topographic survey, excavation and coring, and 14C dating of these coastal deposits and beachrocks outcrops, we have reconstructed a sea-level curve for the Holocene. For the first time on the Brazilian coast it was identified a negative record of relative sea-level during Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene transition. After the transition, a relatively rapid increase of sea-level began. At approximately at 8500 cal yr BP, the sea-level was 0.5 m below the current level, was overtaken for the first time in the Holocene, at approximately 7500 cal yr BP. The maximum level of +2.5 m was reached between 4770 and 4490 cal yr BP. At the point of maximum transgression, the sea-level began a general behavior of lowering until the present. These results confirm other data already obtained elsewhere along the Atlantic coast of South America. The results of this study are consistent with previous researches and they help to refine the Holocene sea-level record along the Brazilian coast.

Ganoderma is a cosmopolitan genus of fungi with species distributed in temperate and tropical regions. Species of Ganoderma in living Leguminosae were observed in Park de la Salud in Pance, Cali, Colombia and we record G. multiplicatum for the first time from Colombia. A distribution map of this genus in the Neotropical region is presented.
