Siphonophores are one of the least known gelatinous zooplankters in the tropical waters of the Northwestern Atlantic. Most of the regional knowledge about their diversity and distribution is based on surface samples (0–200 m). Siphonophores were collected from oceanic waters off the Mexican Caribbean across an expanded sampling range (0–940 m) during two cruises and were taxonomically examined. A total of 47 siphonophore species were recorded, of these, 14 had not been found in this sector of the Caribbean Sea and 10 represent new records for the Caribbean Basin. The number of species currently known from the western Caribbean is increased from 42 to 56. Some of these species also represent new records for the Northwestern Tropical Atlantic region. The greatest relative increase was observed among species of Lensia, five of which are exclusively deep-living forms dwelling below 300 m. A revised, expanded checklist of the siphonophores of the Western Caribbean is also provided. These results confirm the need of further deep sampling to increase our understanding of Caribbean siphonophore diversity.

We provide a floristic and iconographic reference of benthic marine diatom taxa growing on various artificial substrate plates: fiber-glass, stainless steel, aluminum and copper, afixed to a subtidal beach, as well as of diatoms from the adjacent sediments. The sampling site is located 10 km off the beach of Puerto de Telchac, Yucatan, Mexico. The floristic survey comprises 161 diatom taxa, species and varieties, with six new records for Mexican waters with taxonomic, nomenclatural, and updated bibliographic information for each taxon. Twenty-five taxa were identified solely to genus level. The number of species per substrate was: fiberglass 102, sediments 76, aluminum 51, stainless steel 14, and copper 10. The resulting catalog gathers 267 images, with 137 scanning electron micrographs and 135 light micrographs. Fiber-glass plates showed the highest similarity to natural substrate, at 70% of the total taxa, while copper harbored only 6%.

The benthic dinoflagellate genus Cabra is reported for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea and the South Atlantic Ocean, with additional records in the Caribbean Sea and the eastern Asian coasts. Cabra aremorica is reported for the first time after the original description. However, these records should be considered cautiously because the distinction between Cabra aremorica and C. reticulata is difficult based on routine light microscopy observations. It is uncertain whether there is a high intraspecific morphological variability or several co-occurring undescribed species. Cabra levis, a species recently described, is reported for first time beyond the type locality. Sin embargo, estos registros deben ser considerados con cautela porque la distinción entre Cabra aremorica y C. reticulata es difícil basándose solo en observaciones rutinarias de microscopía óptica. No está claro si existe una alta variabilidad morfológica intra-específica o si existen varias especies no descritas que coexisten. Cabra levis, una especie recientemente descrita, se describe por primera vez más allá de su localidad tipo.

The crustacean decapod fauna of Cubagua Island in the Caribbean Sea, Venezuela, an island much affected by coastal upweling, was surveyed. A total of 178 species from 41 families were recorded, of which 56 species were new records for the island; eigth genera and six species were new records for Venezuela. Most species had previously been recorded from the the Caribbean province, 19.7% were endemic for the province, 64.1% had affinities to the Brazilian province, 57.3% to the Texan and Carolinian provinces and 45.5% showed continuous distributions across the provinces but showing less endemism and more affinities with Brazilian province than the general trends of distributions of decapods in the Caribbean. It appears that upwelling processes around the island hinders the development of the typical Caribbean marine ecosystems. The proximity with the northern limit of the Brazilian province also affects the biodiversity of the island.

We document multiple new records for the deep-water clingfish species Gymnoscyphus ascitus Böhlke and Robins 1970, known previously from only nine specimens collected at the type locality along the Atlantic coast of the Lesser Antillean island of St. Vincent. Five additional specimens, four from the Caribbean Sea (Mexico, Cozumel) and one from the Atlantic (north coast of Cuba), are reported.

New records and range extensions are documented for 19 species of brachyuran crabs collected during INVEMAR-Macrofauna II expeditions between 20 and 150 m depth along the Caribbean coast of Colombia. A summary of morphological characteristics of the species and genera, their distribution, and remarks based on a study of the specimens collected and available published information is included. The new records involve species of the families Calappidae, Epialtidae, Goneplacidae, Inachidae, Inachoididae, Leucosiidae, Mithracidae, Palicidae and Xanthidae. The presence of Persephona crinita, Podochela lamelligera, Aepinus septemspinosus and Collodes inermis represent geographic and in some cases bathymetric range extensions within the Caribbean Sea.

Dunns’ mud turtle Kinosternon dunni is recognized only from a few localities in the drainages of the San Juan, Baudó and Docampadó Rivers in Chocó, Colombia. We report on the occurrence of the species in three new localities in a different drainage, two in the Atrato River drainage, which flows into the Caribbean Sea, and a third locality in the Gulf of Urabá, in the Colombian Caribbean. These new records extend the range of the species approximately 367 km to the north of the closest previous confirmed record.

Calcareous sponges of the subclass Calcinea from Martinique (Caribbean Sea) are presented under an integrative perspective (morphology and DNA: ITS and C-LSU). Eleven species of six genera have been found in Martinique, three of them being new to science: Borojevia crystallina sp. nov., Clathrina delicata sp. nov., and Ernstia adunca sp. nov. Among these new records, four species were previously known from other Caribbean localities: Arturia vansoesti, Clathrina insularis, C. mutabilis, and Leucaltis clathria. Two species previously known in Brazilian waters are reported for the first time in the Caribbean Sea: Arturia alcatraziensis and C. cf. cylindractina. Finally, the occurrence of C. aurea and Leucetta floridana in Martinique is confirmed. The two molecular markers (ITS and C-LSU) and the morphological characters considered (e.g. body shape, aquiferous system and spicules) provided congruent classifications what tend to confirm their reliability for the taxonomy of Clathrinida. After the present work, a total of 17 species of Calcarea are recognised for Martinique. We discuss three types of distribution patterns (Endemic, Caribbean-Brazil, and Amphi-Atlantic), Martinique likely playing an important role as stepping stone to garantee connectivity among populations of Calcinea in the Atlantic.
