INTRODUCTION: The increasing practice of ecotourism and rural tourism in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, highlights the importance of studies concerning the occurrence of potential intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni. This study aimed to identify species of Biomphalaria snails in municipalities along the Estrada Real, an important Brazilian tourism project. METHODS: The specimens were collected in different water collections of 36 municipalities along the Estrada Real in the southeast of the State of Minas Gerais. Biomphalaria species were characterized using both morphological and molecular approaches. The research was conducted between August 2005 and September 2009 and all the sites visited were georeferenced using GPS. RESULTS: Six Biomphalaria species were found in 30 of the 36 municipalities studied: glabrata, tenagophila, straminea, peregrina, occidentalis and schrammi. The first three species of Biomphalaria, recognized as intermediate hosts of S. mansoni, were present in 33.3%, 47.2% and 8.3% of the municipalities studied, respectively. The mollusks were found in different types of water collections and no infection by S. mansoni was detected. The highest occurrence of Biomphalaria concentration was verified in the area covered by the Caminho Novo route (Diamantina/MG to Rio de Janeiro/RJ). CONCLUSIONS: Considering the occurrence of schistosomiasis in the State of Minas Gerais and the socioeconomic repercussions involved in the Estrada Real Project, this work focuses on the vulnerability of water collections due to the presence of Biomphalaria mollusks and emphasizes the need for epidemiological surveillance and sanitary and educational measures integrated with the local community and tourism sectors.

ABSTRACT Ecology of orchid species was studied, surveyed and characterized on Serra das Cabeças, a subunit of Parque Estadual da Serra do Brigadeiro (PESB), Araponga-MG, Brazil. Data were obtained through monthly visits on all trails of the area, from 2004 to 2014 covering different types of vegetation, collecting some species and identifying them. We observed characteristics such as type of vegetation, habitat where each species was found, intensity of luminosity, altitude and position of plants in relation to watercourses. Obtained results allowed to conclude: 80 species were identified, of which 45 had not been reported for PESB; five for the state of Minas Gerais, and four for Brazilian flora. Concerning habitat, 57.50% are epiphytic, 1.25% hemiepiphytic, 2.50% humic, 15.00% lithophytic and 23.75% terrestrial. Considering vegetation, 52.50% are located in upper montane forest, 1.25% understorey, 10.00% slope forest, 8.75% in transition forest to altitude field, and 27.50% in altitude field. The survey of Orchidaceae species of present study will allow updating the lists of species present in PESB and of Brazilian flora, recorded in Jardim Botânico in Rio de Janeiro State.

This study was conducted to assess the presence of schistosomiasis mansoni in the "Noroeste de Minas" mesoregion, an area considered non-endemic. A malacologic survey and parasitologic stool examinations were undertaken in 13 municipalities of the mesoregion. A sample of 3,283 primary school students was submitted to fecal examination by the Kato-Katz method. A total of 3,627 planorbids was collected and examined. The molluscs were identified as Biomphalaria straminea in seven municipalities (Unaí, Bonfinópolis de Minas, Paracatu, João Pinheiro, Vazante, Lagamar and Lagoa Grande) and as Biomphalaria peregrina in one (Presidente Olegário). All planorbids were negative for Schistosoma mansoni. Four students were diagnosed with schistosomiasis in the municipalities of Buritis, Formoso, Paracatu and Unaí, but none of these cases was considered autochthonous. The data obtained indicate that the "Noroeste de Minas" mesoregion continues to be non-endemic for schistosomiasis mansoni, although the presence of intermediate hosts associated with parasitized individuals emphasizes the need for epidemiological surveillance of schistosomiasis in this mesoregion.

We present the first record of Urostrophus vautieri for the state of Espírito Santo and a distribution map for the species. This species was previoulsy known from the states of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. The present record represent an extension of nearly 200 km to the North from the nearest published record for the species.

We describe, illustrate and compare with related species the southeastern Brazilian Calyptranthes arachnicola, C. biconvexa, C. carangola, Eugenia grandissima and Plinia longa. Calyptranthes arachnicola, from the state of Rio de Janeiro, is apparently related to Calyptranthes ursina, differing by its larger blades and pendulous inflorescences; Calyptranthes biconvexa, also from Rio de Janeiro, is apparently related to C. lanceolata, being distinguished by its blades with adaxially biconvex midvein and shorter inflorescences; Calyptranthes carangola, from the state of Minas Gerais, is apparently close to C. curta, differing by its narrower blades, longer inflorescences and narrower bracts; Eugenia grandissima, also from Minas Gerais, is apparently close to E. umbrosa, but has larger leaves and petioles, blades with midvein adaxially raised and larger bracteoles; and Plinia longa, from the state of Espírito Santo, is related to Plinia edulis, differing by its narrowly oblong leaves. Additionally, species are evaluated for their conservation status according to the information available.

The occurrence of Mischocyttarus consimilis Zikán, Mischocyttarus ignotus Zikán, Mischocyttarus nomurae Richards and Mischocyttarus paraguayensis Zikán for the state of Minas Gerais and Mischocyttarus garbei Zikán for the state of Rio de Janeiro are registered for the first time, collected through active search and attractive traps. Neste trabalho é registrado pela primeira vez a ocorrência de Mischocyttarus consimilis Zikán, Mischocyttarus ignotus Zikán, Mischocyttarus nomurae Richards e Mischocyttarus paraguayensis Zikán para o estado de Minas Gerais e Mischocyttarus garbei Zikán para o estado do Rio de Janeiro coletadas por meio de busca ativa e armadilhas atrativas.

Two new species of Notomicrus Sharp, 1882 from Brazil are described and illustrated: N. meizon sp. nov. from the state of Amazonas and N. teramnus sp. nov. from the state of Minas Gerais. The new species can be distinguished from all other members of Notomicrus mainly by their aedeagal features, especially for N. teramnus sp. nov., with a unique aedeagal structure. In addition, new records from Brazil are provided for N. brevicornis Sharp, 1882 (states of Amazonas and Pará), N. gracilipes Sharp, 1882 (Amazonas and Rio de Janeiro), N. malkini Young, 1978 (Amazonas, Pará and Rio de Janeiro), and N. traili Sharp, 1882 (Amazonas, Goiás and Paraná).

Three new Brazilian sharpshooter species of the genus Geitogonalia Young, 1977 are described: G. buccina sp. nov., G. piei sp. nov., and G. tetracorni sp. nov. The first species is known from the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, whereas the second and third species are from the state of Paraná. We provide descriptions of the male and female (except for G. piei), photographs and illustrations, as well as a revised diagnosis of the genus and a key to the five known species.

A new Brazilian leafhopper genus of the subfamily Neocoelidiinae is proposed: Takiyaella gen. nov. based on T. sexguttata (Chiamolera & Cavichioli, 2003) gen. et comb. nov. and five new species: T. anomala gen. et sp. nov., T. coelhomarquesae gen. et sp. nov., and T. daniela gen. et sp. nov. from the state of Rio de Janeiro; T. cavichiolii gen. et sp. nov. from the state of Paraná, and T. mejdalanii gen. et sp. nov. from the state of Minas Gerais. A distribution map and identification key to Takiyaella species are provided.

We report Siphlophis leucocephalus in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. This species is now known to occur in ombrophilous and semidecidual forests in the state of Bahia, and Cerrado gallery forests in Tocantins and Minas Gerais. We also review the distribution of S. longicaudatus, a species inhabiting dense ombrophilous forests, ecotones with mixed ombrophilous forests or semidecidual forests, and Cerrado rocky outcrops (campos rupestres). This species is recorded from the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.
