Magnesium alloys are being used as structural components in industry because of their high strength to weight ratio. But their high electrochemical activity and poor corrosion resistance limited their applications. Therefore, surface modifications are needed for protection purpose. This paper studied the anodic micro-arc oxidation and electroless Ni-P plating surface modifications on AZ80 magnesium alloy. The SEM, XRD and EDS were used to characterize the surface coating. It shows that a micro-porous MgO layer with the pores size 5 – 20 μm was fabricated on the bare magnesium alloy. The nodule Ni-P deposition could be prepared on the out layer of MgO with Ni/P atomic ratio being 1.4. The pores in MgO layer could be sealed by the following Ni-P deposition. Therefore the corrosion resistance of the magnesium alloy could be further improved.

In the present research, the influences of different extrusion ratios (15, 30, 45, 60, and 75) and extrusion temperature (300°C, 330°C, 360°C, 390°C, 420°C) on the mechanical properties and microstructure changes of AZ80 magnesium alloy have been investigated through tensile test and via ZEISS digital metallographic microscope observation. Research indicates that the alloy’s plasticity gradually decreases as the temperature increases, and that the alloy’s tensile strength varies with the extrusion ratio. At 330°C, the alloy’s particle grain is small and a small amount of black hard and brittle second-phase β (Mg17Al12) are precipitated uniformly along the grain boundary causing the gradual increase of the alloy’s tensile strength. When the extrusion temperature is up to 390°C, the grain size increases significantly, but the second phase precipitation along grain boundaries transforms into continuous and uniform-distribution precipitation within the grain. In this case, when the extrusion ratio is 60, the alloy’s tensile strength reaches its peak 390 Mpa. As the extrusion temperature increases, inhomogeneous precipitation of the second-phase along grain boundaries increases, causing the decrease of the alloy’s strength. At the same temperature, both the tensile strength and plasticity increases firstly and then decreases as extrusion ratio increases. With the gradual increase of the refinement grain, the dispersed precipitates increase and the alloy’s tensile strength and plasticity reach their peaks when the extrusion temperature is 390°C. As the grain grows, the second phase becomes inhomogeneous distribution, and the alloy’s strength and plasticity gradually decrease.

In this paper, tensile tests were performed at elevated temperature and strain rate in order to investigate the plastic flow behavior, anisotropic characteristics and microstructural evolution of Ti6Al4V sheets under testing conditions similar to the ones experienced during hot stamping operations. It is shown that the Ti6Al4V anisotropic characteristics under the investigated forming conditions, different from the ones of the superplastic regime, are influenced by the variation of the material texture as a function of the testing temperature. The Ti6Al4V flow stress behavior was analyzed as a function of the deformation temperature and strain rate. Afterwards, the Arrhenius constitutive model was proposed to predict the flow behavior of Ti6Al4V sheets at elevated temperature and strain rate. The statistical analysis of its predictive capabilities suggests that the Arrhenius model guarantees a good accuracy in reproducing the flow behavior of Ti6Al4V sheets.

Purpose Accurate prediction of residual stress requires precise knowledge of the constitutive behavior of as-quenched material. This study aims to model the flow stress behavior for as-quenched Al-Mg-Si alloy. Design Methodology Approach In the present work, the flow behavior of as-quenched Al-Mg-Si alloy is studied by the hot compression tests at various temperatures (573–723 K), strain rates (0.1–1 s−1) and cooling rates (1–10 K/s). Flow stress behavior is then experimentally observed, and an Arrhenius model is used to predict the flow behavior. However, due to the fact that materials parameters and activation energy do not remain constant, the Arrhenius model has an unsatisfied prediction for the flow behavior. Considering the effects of temperatures, strain rates and cooling rates on constitutive behavior, a revised Arrhenius model is developed to describe the flow stress behavior. Findings The experimental results show that the flow stress increases by the increasing cooling rate, increasing strain state and decreasing temperature. In comparison to the experimental data, the revised Arrhenius model has an excellent prediction for as-quenched Al-Mg-Si alloy. Originality Value With the revised Arrhenius model, the flow behaviors at different quenching conditions can be obtained, which is an essential step to the residual stress prediction when the model is implemented in a finite element code, e.g. ABAQUS, in the future.
