Genetic parameters and genetic and phenotypic trends were estimated for weight at weaning (WW) and visual scores (VS) of conformation (C), precocity (P), musculature (M) and navel (N) for Angus × Nellore crossbred calves. It was used 39,676 records from pre-weaning phase of animals born from 1992 to 2002 in mid-western, southeastern and southern Brazil. The components of covariance were estimated using REML, in animal model, considering as random the maternal and direct additive genetic effects, and as fixed, the effects of contemporaneous group, the genetic group of the animal and of the cow, and as covariates the age of the calf at weaning and the age of the cow at calving, both on days and with linear and quadratic effects, besides direct (DH) and maternal heterosis (MH), both with only the linear effect. Estimates of direct and maternal heritability were 0.30 and 0.19, respectively, for WW, whereas VSs ranged from 0.16 to 0.20 and from 0.09 to 0.16, which indicates the possibility to obtain genetic gain through selection. It is expected answer correlated to C, P and for M when selection is practiced for weight at weaning is expected, as well as for P and M when selection is practiced for C. The direct and maternal genetic trends for WW (g/year) and for C, P, M and N (points/year) were: 221.0 and -312.0; 0.0022 and 0.00003; 0.0010 and 0.0001; 0.0013 and -0.0008; 0.0010 and 0.00009, respectively, while the phenotypic were: -685.2; -0.0102; -0.0219; -0.0256 and -0.0453, which highlights the need to adopt criteria for identifying young bulls of higher genetic value for WW and VSs.

ABSTRACT: This study sought to estimate (co)variance and genetic parameters for birth weight (BWT) and weaning weight (WWT) in Santa Ines sheep. A total of 2,111 records were obtained from EMBRAPA/CPATC experimental herds, dating from the years 1998 to 2008. (Co)variance parameters were obtained through a two-trait analysis with the Gibbs sampling algorithm using the MTGSAM program. The mixed model included the environmental effects of sex, contemporary group and type of birth, in addition to residual, direct and maternal additive effects. Mean estimates of direct heritability for BWT and WWT were 0.25 and 0.09, respectively. Mean estimates of maternal heritability were 0.34 for BWT and 0.24 for WWT. The genetic correlation between BWT and WWT was 0.14. The results suggest that breeding Santa Ines sheep for meat production must take into consideration direct and maternal additive genetic effects.

AbstractGenetic parameters for body weights in Timahdite sheep were estimated using records of 10370 lambs from the ‘Société Nationale de Développement de l’Elevage’ born in 1988-89 to 1998-99. An animal model with derivativefree restricted maximum likelihood procedures was used. Random effects were direct and maternal additive genetic, maternal permanent environmental, and error. Direct and maternal heritability estimates were 0·05 and 0·05 for birth weight, 0·02 and 0·07 for weight at 30 days, 0·07 and 0·08 for weight at 70 days, 0·06 and 0·01 for weight at 90 days. Estimates of fraction of variance due to maternal permanent environmental effects were close to zero, except for weight at 90 days. Genetic correlations between direct and maternal genetic effects were –0·55, –0·51, –0·50 and –0·17 for body weights at birth, 30, 70 and 90 days, respectively. Estimates of direct genetic correlations among body weights were positive and high, ranging from 0·69 to unity. Phenotypic correlations were positive and moderate to high, being lower than their corresponding direct genetic correlations. Estimates of correlations between maternal genetic effects among weights were positive and high, varying from 0·79 to unity. Cross-correlations between direct genetic effects for one weight and maternal genetic effects for another weight were consistently negative, ranging from –0·05 to –0·63. These results indicate that selecting for improved maternal and/or direct effects in Timahdite sheep is expected to generate only slow genetic progress in terms of early growth.

<p>El objetivo de este trabajo fue estimar parámetros genéticos para características de crecimiento y la tendencia de sus valores genéticos en una población de la raza bovina criolla sanmartinero, localizada en el departamento del Meta, Colombia. Se utilizó un modelo animal con efectos directos, maternos y de ambiente permanente y se analizaron las características peso al nacimiento (PN), peso al destete (PD) (ajustado a 240 d.), peso a los 16 meses (P16m), ganancia diaria de peso al destete (GPD) y ganancia diaria de peso desde el destete a los 16 meses (GP16m). Se analizaron 2.812 registros productivos de animales y se encontraron valores de heredabilidad directa moderados, variando desde 0,16 hasta 0,37 para GP16m y GPD respectivamente. Los valores de heredabilidad directa siempre fueron mayores que los de heredabilidad materna y los efectos de ambiente permanente variaron entre 0,024 ± 0,033 para PN hasta 0,067 ± 0,041 para P16m; los valores de repetibilidad fueron superiores para las características de PD (0,41) y GPD (0,37). Los valores genéticos anuales promedio para los efectos directos presentaron en general valores positivos, lo que muestra una tendencia creciente aunque con una alta variación a través de los años; por su parte, los valores genéticos maternos anuales promedio presentaron valores cercanos a cero, aunque en general su tendencia también fue creciente. A pesar de tratarse de un núcleo de conservación, donde no se ha dado selección para estas características, se encontró una tendencia genética que indica un cambio genético positivo.  </p><p> </p><p><strong>Genetic parameters and trends for growth traits in creole cattle sanmartinero in the eastern savannas in Colombia</strong>  </p><p>The aim of this work was to estimate the genetic parameters for growth traits and the tendency of their genetic values in a population of Bovine Creole cattle Sanmartinero, located in Meta, Colombia. Was used an animal model with direct and maternal effects as well as a permanent environmental effects and were analyzed birth weight, weaning weight, (adjusted at 240 d), weight at 16 months, weaning daily gain, and daily gain at 16 months. Were analyzed a total of 2812 productive records from animals and were found direct heritability moderate values, ranging between from 0.16 to 0.3 for GP16m and GP respectively. The direct heritability values always were higher than the maternal heritability values and the permanent environmental effects ranged between 0.024 ± 0.033 for PN until 0.067 ± 0.041 for P16m, but the repeatability values were higher for PD (0.41) and GPD (0.37) traits. With reference to the tendency of average yearly genetic values for direct effects, always displayed positive values and a increase tendency however a high variation between the years were found, conversely to the genetic maternal values than displayed generally values near to zero, but their tendency also was to increase. Is noteworthy than in spite of to be a conservation herd, than do not has been used for selection programs for those traits, was found a genetic tendency that suggest a positive genetic change. </p>

Abstract. Weaning weight, preweaning daily gain and 205-day weight of Hungarian Fleckvieh calves (n=8 929, bulls =4 539, heifers =4 390) born from 232 sires between 1980 and 2003 were examined. Variance, covariance components and heritability values and correlation coefficients were estimated. The effect of the maternal permanent environment on genetic parameters and breeding values were examined. Two animal models were used for breeding value estimation. The direct heritability (hd2) of weaning weight, preweaning daily gain and 205-day weight was between 0.37 and 0.42. The maternal heritability (hm2) of these traits was 0.06 and 0.07. The direct-maternal correlations (rdm) were medium and negative −0.52 and −0.74. Contribution of the maternal heritability and maternal permanent environment to phenotype is smaller than that of direct heritabilities (hm2+c2< hd2). The ratio of the variance of maternal permanent environment in the phenotypic variance (c2) changed from 3 to 6 %. Estimated breeding values changed whether the permanent environmental effect of dam wasn’t taken into consideration but the rank of the animals was not modified. The genetic value for weaning results of Hungarian Fleckvieh population has increased since 1997.

The Italian Heavy Draught Horse (IHDH) breed is selected based on linear type traits (LTT) evaluated at young age on six-month-old foals. However, animals retained for reproduction are scored also at adults age (about 30 months), and the evaluation is mandatory for the final official admission to the stud book of candidate mares and stallions. This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters of LTT scored at 30 months to consider if they are feasible for selection instead of using foal data and to reduce costs of selection plan. Data included 19 years of evaluation for 14 LTT and an overall score. Analyses were performed on 5835 females and 856 males via animal model. The heritability ranged from 0.03 (upper line length) to 0.40 (frame size). Traits of selection interest (head size and expression; temperament/movement; fleshiness; fore diameter; rear diameter) reported heritability between 0.21 and 0.31. High genetic correlations were obtained among traits related to muscular development, 0.73 on average. Positive genetic trends were found in traits of selection interest, already selected from foal type trait data. Accounting for genetic parameters estimated in adult animals instead in foals is feasible in IHDH selection.

Lactation records of Jersey cattle on Jersey Island are recorded within National Milk Records of England and Wales (NMR). Since it is a closed breed population, it is not possible to amalgamate these data with Jerseys recorded in the United Kingdom (UK). Presently genetic evaluations of Jersey Island bulls are carried out using heifer records with a modification of the model used in the UK to account for the smaller herd sizes. Cows are not evaluated.The objective of this study was to analyse Jersey Island data in order to estimate genetic parameters and establish genetic trends after evaluating all bulls and cows using an Individual Animal Model (LAM).

Abstract. Title of the paper: Estimation of variance components from group mean records of laying hens housed in group cages Two models are presented to estimate variance components if only group mean records are available. The first model accounts for additive genetic relationships and full-sib group effects (SIMIANER and GJERDE, 1991) and the second model contains the additive genetic effects of all animals from one cage by using modified design matrices. Estimates of the genetic parameters were obtained by the MIVQUE-method (RAO, 1971; LAMOTTE, 1973). The variances of the estimated heritabilities were derived from the information matrix. Estimations from individual records and from average records (cage average) were compared in a small application on laying hen data. The analysed trait was single egg weight measured on hens housed in group cages. It could be shown: If cage variance is negligible, than for the estimation of the heritabilities full-sib data can be used successfully. The application of the modified animal model is suggested, because this model can take into account more complex relationships between the animals of one cage.

Abstract The objective of this study was to estimate the heritability, genetic correlation and estimated breeding values for age at first (AFC) and second calving (ASC) for Nellore females raised in Southern Brazil. The (co)variance and estimated breeding values were obtained using Bayesian inference in a bivariate analysis, adopting an animal model. The average ages were 49.30 and 69.85 months, and the heritabilities were 0.25 and 0.26, respectively for AFC and ASC. The genetic correlation between AFC and ASC was 0.88. The correlation between the classifications of sires according to their estimated breeding values was 0.93. The heritability estimates for AFC and ASC suggest the possibility of obtaining genetic gain by selection. The correlation between these traits close to one indicates that they are virtually controlled by the same genes, and the selection for one of them will promote correlated advanced gain for the other.

Abstract. Genetic parameters and genetic trends of total number of born kits (TNB), and number of kits born alive (NBA) were estimated in Pannon White and Pannon Ka rabbits for the first four parities. REML and BLUP procedures were applied using repeatability and multi-trait animal models (PEST and VCE software). Heritability estimates were low for both traits and breeds and ranged between 0.060.43–0.07 (0.010.43–0.02) and 0.040.43–0.06 (0.020.43–0.02) for TNB and NBA, respectively (standard errors of estimates are given in brackets). The estimated permanent environmental effects showed higher relative importance compared to the additive genetic effects and they ranged between 0.070.43–0.13 (0.010.43–0.02) and 0.080.43–0.14 (0.010.43–0.02) for TNB and NBA, respectively. High genetic correlation coefficients were found between TNB and NBA (0.97±0.02, 0.96±0.02) for Pannon White and Pannon Ka, respectively. The genetic correlation coefficients estimated between TNB and between NBA of the successive parities (as separate traits) ranged between 0.640.43–0.97 (0.040.43–0.11) and 0.560.43–0.99 (0.030.43–0.10) for Pannon White and Pannon Ka, respectively. The estimated genetic trends for TNB and NBA were negligible for the Pannon White and small (0.030.43–0.02 [0.010.43–0.01]) for Pannon Ka. The mean squared errors (MSE) of the repeatability and multi-trait models were similar but the correlation coefficients of between the observed and predicted values were lower for the multi-trait (0.270.43–0.61) than for the repeatability models (0.43–0.65).

The aim of the current study was to estimate genetic parameters and trends for body weight traits at different ages in Ghezel lambs. Traits included were birth weight (BW), 3-month weight (3MW), 6-month weight (6MW), 9-month weight (9MW), and yearling weight (YW). Data and pedigree information used in the present study were collected at the Breeding Station of Ghezel sheep during 1986-2009. (Co) variance components were estimated using REML procedure and breeding values of animals were predicted with Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) methodology under univariate analysis. Three different animal models were fitted. The models consisted of the direct additive genetic effect but differed in combinations of maternal additive genetic and maternal permanent environmental effects. Genetic trends for each trait were obtained by regressing the means of predicted breeding values on year of birth. The estimates of direct heritability were 0.285, 0.371, 0.388, 0.450 and 0.179, respectively. Also, the maternal heritability was estimated 0.113, 0.031, 0.021 and 0.030 for BW, WW, 6MW and 9MW, respectively. Direct genetic trends were positive and significant for BW, WW, 6MW (p<0.01), 9MW and YW (p<0.05) and were obtained 2.34, 46.20, 55.11, 33.40 and 24.01 (g/year), respectively. Also, maternal trends for BW, WW, 6MW and YW were positive and highly significant (p<0.01) and were 3.37, 17.05, 12.56 and 16.30 (g/year), respectively. The results indicated that considering maternal effects in the statistical model make accurate estimates of genetic parameters. Also, improvement of growth traits in Ghezel sheep seems to be likely in selection programs.
