Information on ichthyoplankton is an important tool in determining reproduction periods that - if associated to environmental variables - allows for inferences about the factors that regulate their intensity, beginning, and ending. In this context, this study aims to establish (i) ichthyoplankton composition; (ii) temporal variations in the overall density of eggs and larvae and among the most important taxa; and (iii) the influence of some abiotic and biotic variables on these organisms' abundance. Ichthyoplankton sampling was undertaken during the period between April 2005 and March 2006 at the Ivinhema River, upper Paraná River basin (MS/Brazil). Differences in the ichthyoplankton's temporal variation were evaluated using unifactorial ANOVAs. Principal Component Analysis and Pearson's correlation were used for the relationships between eggs and larvae densities and environmental variables. A total of 3,341 eggs and 2,896 larvae were captured during the period studied, and most of them were medium-sized and large species that carried out some type of reproductive migration. The highest densities of eggs and larvae occurred during the months of spring and summer, except for those of Bryconamericus stramineus, which was most abundant during the winter. The density of ichthyoplankton was most positively correlated with the water's outflow and temperature. However, Plagioscion squamosissimus was positively related to the increase in pH and in zooplanktonic organisms, while B. stramineus was inversely correlated with water outflow and temperature. The study concludes that spawning is most intense in the spring and summer, especially between November and January, and is related to the greatest values of water temperature and outflow. Nevertheless, the response and reproductive intensity in relation to the environmental variables vary according to the species.

Astyanax biotae é uma espécie originalmente descrita em um afluente do Rio Paranapanema, bacia do alto Paraná. Durante amostragens realizadas em drenagens dos rios Ivinhema e Verde, no sistema do alto Paraná, em Mato Grosso do Sul, exemplares de A. biotae foram coletados em cabeceiras de pequenos riachos e em lagoas de várzea, tanto em Unidades de Conservação como em áreas de agricultura intensiva. Os dados morfomerísticos de 20 indivíduos analisados foram similares aos da série-tipo. Exemplares testemunhos estão depositados nas coleções ictiológicas da UFMS (ZUFMS), UEMS (CPUEMS) e UNESP (DZSJRP). Com base nos critérios da IUCN, sugerimos sua classificação como Menos Preocupante (LC) no estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, considerando principalmente a inexistência de ameaças efetivas em duas das áreas de ocorrência da espécie, situadas dentro de Unidades de Conservação. No entanto, reforçamos a urgência em medidas para a proteção das regiões de cabeceiras de riachos, a fim de evitar o aumento do desmatamento, assoreamento e poluição agrícola, problemas recorrentes no Cerrado, que comprometem severamente a manutenção desses hábitats e suas espécies. É necessário investir em estudos sobre a biologia da espécie e ampliar as amostragens, buscando diminuir os vazios amostrais ainda existentes nas drenagens estaduais.

Researches on ichthyoplankton seems to be an important tool to identification of spawning areas and periods for freshwater fish. Ichthyoplankton was sampled monthly in the headwaters of the Cuiabá River, upper Paraguay River basin, (Mato Grosso State, Brazil), and in four of its tributaries, between November 2007 and March 2008, to evaluate the spatial and temporal distribution of fish eggs and larvae and the influence of regional and local variables on their distribution. In total, 22,067 eggs and 1,045 larvae were collected. A significant negative correlation was found between egg density and the variables of river level and flow volume. Larval density was not significantly correlated with any of the regional variables. The egg and larval densities were significantly higher at the sampling sites in the main river. The highest densities were found in environments with greater river widths, intermediate depths and lowest values of dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, and transparency. Anostomidae, Zungaro zungaro, Bryconamericus spp., Pimelodus spp., Pimelodidae, Auchenipteridae, and Siluriformes were the most abundant groups of larvae, and were observed at the sampling sites in the main river. The study site is an important spawning area for migratory and, non-migratory fish species, and highlight the importance of the main river to the reproductive event, by the influence of local variables transparency and river width, which in turn maybe temporally influenced by the river level.

This study aimed to evaluate the potential of litter and litterfall as ecological indicators in three sites in restoration process located in Ivinhema, Jateí and Caarapó – Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil, after 12, 13 and 16 years of implantation, respectively. The objective was also to obtain Pearson's simple linear correlation) between monthly litterfall with environmental variables of rainfall and air temperature. To litterfall sampling, 15 litter traps were used (0.80 m x 0.80 m) and, for litter sampling, six collections were carried out in each restoration site, in December 2016, using a frame (0.64 m2). The samples were separated into three components: leaves, twigs, reproductive material (flowers and fruits). The high litter amount, in the three sites evaluated (Ivinhema 9.4 Mg ha-1; Jatéi 5.5 Mg ha-1; and Caarapó 7.1 Mg ha-1), demonstrates the importance of litterfall and litter as an indicator for the stages initial succession in restored forests. Herein we report the second record for Leporinus tigrinus in the Upper Paraná River basin, based on two specimens collected during field studies at Sucuriú River, Mato Grosso do Sul State and two specimens from Claro River, Goiás State. These records extend the species’ distribution in approximately 500 km southwards from the first record in Corumbá dam area, Goiás State. Moreover, we discuss whether the species is native in the Upper Paraná River basin.

In this paper, nine species of Monogenea were recorded parasitizing the gills of Hoplias aff. malabaricus from the Upper Paraná River. The host were collected by gillnets in different regions to the Upper Paraná River Floodplain between March 2010 and March 2011. The parasites were quantified, fixed and preserved according with specialized literature. All hosts analyzed were parasitized by monogeneans. The monogeneans species were recorded Urocleidoides malabaricusi, U. cuiabai, U. eremitus, U. brasiliensis, Cosmetocleithrum bulbocirrus, Vancleaveus janauacaensis, Anacanthorus sp., Dactylogyridae gen. sp. and Dactylogyridae gen. 1. sp.

Analysis of drift of ichthyoplankton in two channels in the River Paraná, Brazil, were made. Sampling was undertaken from October 1995 to April 1996 during nychthemeral cycles. Water samples were collected to determine several environmental variables. Eggs densities largely differed to layers, times of day and months. In both the channels, highest occurrence of eggs was detected between January and March; greater concentrations at the bottom, during night. With regard to larvae, densities were significantly different in channels, times of days and months. Maximum occurrences were seen in the right channel, in both layers, with largest capture between January and March. Surface of the both channels presented highest density of larvae during night. Water temperature, electrical conductivity and flux velocity were different in the two channels, however, these variables and larvae density didn't showed correlations. This indicates that there was another possible factor, might be influencing the distribution of ichthyoplankton.

The present study aims to relate the micronucleus frequency in Tradescantia pallida to environmental factors and cardiorespiratory diseases to infer the effect of air pollution. The number of hospitalizations, diseases cases, frequency of micronuclei in plants, environmental variables, altitude, and vehicle traffic in cities of Mato Grosso do Sul were evaluated due to the high flow that surrounds agribusiness. The frequency of micronuclei decreased with the increase in relative humidity, while the altitude did not influence the mutagenicity or genotoxicity of the evaluated plants. The municipalities with micronucleus frequencies above 200 had the highest number of vehicle and cardiorespiratory diseases. Biomonitoring data obtained in cities throughout the year indicate that the number of cardiorespiratory diseases was probably due to vehicular pollution, which is evidenced by the increased frequency of micronuclei in T. pallida.
