Abstract Aim The aim was to analyze the incidence of microplastics in the diet of fish in the middle Uruguay River. Methods The present work analyzed the gastrointestinal content of two species: Astyanax lacustris and Iheringichthys labrosus. Results This study provides the first evidence of synthetic materials, such as fibres and plastics in the gastrointestinal tract of fish species in the Middle Uruguay River basin. A sample of sixty-one A. lacustris and twenty-nine I. labrosus were examined to highlight the ingestion of microplastics in the middle section of the Uruguay River in Brazil. In the A. lacustris, eleven fibres and two fragments were found in their gastrointestinal contents, corresponding to 18.1% of the specimens, while in the I. labrosus, twelve fibres and one fragment were found, corresponding to 34.5% of the specimens analyzed. Blue staining was also prevalent in the occurrence of microplastics. Conclusions These data are the first record of microplastics in this zone and represent a baseline for this contamination for future studies.

Based on National Collections records, this article presents the first report of eight freshwater fish species for Uruguay in the middle and lower Uruguay River basin, extending their current distribution: Cyanocharax alegretensis Malabarba and Weitzman, 2003; Leporinus lacustris Amaral Campos, 1945; Microglanis aff. eurystoma Malabarba and Mahler, 1998; Tatia boemia Koch and Reis, 1996; Lepthoplosternum pectorale (Boulenger, 1895); Crenicichla missioneira Lucena and Kullander, 1992; C. minuano Lucena and Kullander, 1992; Apistogramma borellii Regan, 1906. These species were previously recorded either for upper Uruguay River or Paraná River.

The highfin goby Gobionelus oceanicus is herein reported for the first time in freshwaters of Costa Rica. One specimen was collected in the lower Pacuare River basin, Atlantic slope, Costa Rica. This new record brings the total number of Costa Rican native freshwater fish species to 253.

Probiotic products are viewed as an alternative to the use of antibiotics in freshwater fishes farming. Probiotic organisms include bacteria, yeast, and filamentous fungi offering different benefits to fish including growth promotion, inhibition of pathogen colonisation, and improvement of nutrient digestion, water quality, and stress tolerance, as well as enhancement of reproduction. For these reasons, this review aims to identify the main trends in probiotic amendment in freshwater fishes. Strategies to incorporate the probiotic strains in the fish feed or pellets to allow optimal viability of the strains as they reach the fish gastrointestinal tract (GIT) are crucial in probiotic research and commercial applications for freshwater fish.
