A fuel control system for a prototype gas turbine with recuperator is described. The electronic fuel control was designed with the aid of a hybrid simulator. Its performance is verified on the bench test for a 600-bhp gas turbine engine with recuperator. Prediction of vehicle behavior and transmission requirements were made for a heavy-duty, 32-ton dump truck equipped wtih the 600-bhp gas turbine engine.

An adaptive control system for a gas turbine engine which diagnoses conditions of axial compressor faults is proposed and analyzed. Nonlinear models of the gas turbine, neural networks and genetic algorithms are used in this research. The adaptive control system minimizes the reduction in gas turbine performance deriving from non-destructive faults. In the absence of faults, the system automatically performs the optimization of the engine between overhauls. Improvements concern the definition of adaptive control with faults in progress, and the real-time optimization of the engine during its operative life between overhauls. Simulation results of the suggested control system are also discussed.

This paper presents the prototype of a large gas turbine new series whose peculiar characteristics make the same very attractive for both base and peak load applications. The gas turbine engine, now in an advanced stage of manufacturing, is scheduled to be bench tested in the last quarter of the year. The major design features of the gas turbine engine together with the prototype test program are described. In addition, the peculiar characteristics of the control system and and package installation are mentioned.
