The study critically examined the influence self-esteem on students’ academic performance in physics in senior secondary schools in Port-Harcourt Local Government Area. The purpose of the study was to examine the influence of self-esteem on the academic performance of students with respect to gender. Three research questions and one hypothesis were posed to guide the study to find out the relationship between students’ self-esteem and their academic achievement. The instruments used for the study include a standardized questionnaire developed by Rosenberg (1965), titled “Rosenberg self esteem scale”, and Physics Achievement Test (PAT) developed by the researcher. This test comprised 50 multiple choice questions which cover subjects from SSS1 to SSS3. The PAT was subjected to a validation process and the reliability coefficient obtained was 0.88 through Kuder-Richardson 21. The findings of the study showed that 68 percent of the respondents have low self-esteem while 32 percent are high self-esteemed students. The mean difference (10.04) showed that students with low self-esteem performed poorly compared to students with high self-esteem. The hypothesis revealed that there is a strong positive relationship between the two variables under study, that is students’ self-esteem and their academic performance in physics. The study recommended that physics teachers should recognize the level of each of the students’ self-esteem. Teachers should also allocate time to raise the level of students’ self confidence before teaching difficult topics in Physics.

This study examined gender as a predictor of Physics students’ academic performance in Senior Secondary School external examinations in Ado Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Nigeria. An ex-post-facto research was employed for the study. The entire Physics students in Ado-Ekiti that sat for the West African Examination Council (WAEC) external Examination between 2017 to 2019, were used for the study. A total of three hundred candidates (300) were randomly selected as a sample from five (5) senior secondary schools for the study. Frequency and t-test were used to test the four formulated null hypotheses. The result indicated that; there was a significant difference in the academic performance of male and female Physics students in mixed senior secondary schools, also there was a significant difference in academic performance of male and female Physics students in single-sex senior secondary school, similarly, there was a significant difference in academic performance of female students in Physics in single-sex and mixed senior secondary schools. There was a significant difference in academic performance of male students in Physics in single-sex and mixed senior secondary schools. Based on the findings, appropriate conclusions and recommendations were made.

Students’ poor Financial Accounting performance in senior secondary schools is worrisome and induces youths to engage in several social vices. An attempt to curb the menace and improve students’ performance led this study to assess the instructional resources and effective pedagogy of Financial Accounting in secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. Adopting the descriptive survey research design, the population of the study comprised 2,492 senior secondary schools 1 and 2 students and 10 teachers of Financial Accounting under Education District IV in Lagos State, Nigeria. 300 students and all the 10 teachers eventually emerged as samples using Checkmarket Sample Size Calculator at 5% margin and 95% confidence level. The data were collected using a structured questionnaire that obtained Cronbach’s Alpha=0.90, and analysed using descriptive analysis and t-test at α=0.05 level of significance. The results showed that the teachers of Financial Accounting were not using activity-based pedagogical strategies. Most of the instructional materials necessary for the effective pedagogy of Financial Accounting were inadequate and malfunctioning. Therefore, Financial Accounting teachers are strongly encouraged to apply innovative and experiential learning strategies in teaching and learning. Furthermore, adequate infrastructure and modern equipment in the schools will create better learning opportunities for students.

This study analyzed the use of library resources by staff and students of secondary schools in southern Kaduna senatorial district. The population of this research comprised all secondary schools in southern Kaduna senatorial zone. Multistage sampling technique was employed in drawing a sample size of 800 students and 400 teachers. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire and was tested for reliability using Cronbach alpha. The reliability coefficient of Library use scale was= 0.9. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Findings indicate that majority of the respondents reported that nobody encouraged them to use the library. While, respondents were also tried to benefit from all facilities of the library; borrow books from the library. In the face of using library facilities, majority of the respondents established that they visit the library not only when they have assignment. Based on the findings, the study concludes that organizing a series of lecture under user instruction or user education or library orientation program is required in public senior secondary schools. The study recommends that teachers should also mandate students to use the school library effectively; it can help attain high academic achievement.
