The effect of root pruning (RP) as compared with non-root pruning (NP) and the potential of supplemental irrigation in alleviating the negative effect of root pruning on fruit growth, yield and yield components were investigated in a pear orchard from 2010 to 2011. Results showed that the total shoot length and the number of shoots per tree decreased by 72% and 43%, respectively, in the RP compared to the NP trees; however lateral root growth was stimulated by the RP treatment in the upper soil layers (30–40 cm). Full irrigation and deficit irrigation treatments stabilized the return bloom and improved fruit yield and size compared with the non-irrigated treatment without stimulating vegetative growth. Conclusively, the results indicate that root pruning is an effective practice controlling excessive shoot growth, and supplemental irrigation can improve fruit yield and quality in the root pruned trees. Therefore, a combination of root pruning and irrigation could be a promising alternative to control tree size and secure a stable fruit yield in pear orchards.

Three popular tomato varieties namely, Ratan, BARI tomato-3 and BARI tomato-6 were experimentally evaluated to identify the potential mulch on growth and yield, where the experiment consisted of four mulching treatments viz. water hyacinth, straw, am-ada leaf and banana leaf with a control (no mulch). The experiment was conducted under rainfed condition. In the experiment, mulching showed significant effect on growth, yield components and thus on the yield of tomato. Yield contributing characters were significantly higher when water hyacinth mulch was used. The variety Ratan produced the highest (53.74 t/ha) fruit yield, while BARI tomato-3 showed the lowest (48.89 t/ha) fruit yield. The combination of mulching and variety exhibited significant variation in some yield components and yield. The combination of water hyacinth and Ratan produced the maximum yield (62.16 t/ha) and thus the experiment revealed that water hyacinth and straw mulches have potentiality to increase the yield of tomato. The risk of drought is high in the Sudan savannah zone of West and Central Africa because rainfall in this area is unpredictable in quantity and distribution. Thus, improved maize genotypes tolerant to drought could stabilize maize grain yield in this zone, where recurrent drought threatens grain production. Six maize genotypes, two each of hybrids, open-pollinated varieties (OPVs) and landraces, were evaluated for tolerance to terminal water deficit before flowering. Water deficit significantly reduced growth, grain yield and yield components of the maize genotypes. Significant differences were observed among genotypes for all the traits measured. One hybrid, 9011-30, and two improved OPVs, STR-EV-IWD and IYFD-C0, that showed tolerance to water stress recorded higher grain yield, and accumulated and partitioned more assimilates to the grain than the drought-susceptible genotypes. Also the drought-tolerant genotypes, 9011-30, STR-EV-IWD and IYFD-C0 had more ears/plant and greater numbers of kernels/ear. These genotypes could serve as sources of drought tolerance for the development and improvement of new drought-tolerant maize genotypes.
