This article is devoted to working capital management and its optimization on an inter-organizational level when supply chain members operate collaboratively. We aim to develop and validate a model of collaborative approach to working capital management in supply chains for cases of constrained liquidity and imposed return requirements using supply chain finance (factoring, reverse factoring and inventory financing). As such, we suggest a tool of working capital optimization using financial terms and cash flows verified on Russian supply chain data. Mathematical modeling is suggested as a method to modify an existing working capital management model on the grounds of collaborative financial cost minimization under industry specific liquidity constraints. These liquidity constraints are constructed in such a way as to eliminate possible violations from companies, because their violation will lead to the inverse relation between liquidity and rate of return. The results of the optimization provide recommended values for cash conversion cycle elements – days of inventories, days of accounts payable, days of accounts receivable – that guarantee the coordinating effect of collaborative working capital management. Calculation, further optimization and monitoring of cash conversion cycle values sustain effective working capital management on an inter-organizational level while meeting the liquidity and return levels for each company in a chain. The suggested model can be implemented for a day-to-day decision making process by companies oriented to stay competitive in the long run. Besides, the results obtained show the potential for further coordination among the key members of the supply chain in terms of aligning financial, product, and information flows. Despite the fact that the model provides a static solution to the problem of collaborative working capital management, it has potential for the further development of a dynamic algorithm. Future research should seek to investigate the possible imputation options for gained costs reduction values on the grounds of cooperative games with a coalition structure.

The research is devoted to joint working capital management in supply chains aiming to improve joint working capital management methods through minimization of financial supply chain costs on working capital using Supply Chain Finance (SCF) Solutions. Though SCF applicability in Financial Supply Chain management has recently been studied to relieve access to capital sources, managerial perspective of SCF solutions is still uninvestigated as well as few other areas. The research suggests a managerial algorithm that contains four developed models: the model of Collaborative cash conversion cycle two models of SCF solutions and the model of Joint Working Capital optimization. The models imply using such SCF solutions as Factoring, Reverse Factoring and Inventory Financing to improve Joint Working Capital in terms of costs on it and liquidity of both supply chain members and entire chain, providing the optimal conditions of SCF solutions. Quantitative optimization with SCF solutions demonstrates on the cases of supply chains the improvement of financial position and liquidity of all chain members. The research has a potential to de applied in businesses since the algorithm represents a comprehensive managerial tool for Joint Working capital management in supply chains. It might be used to achieve optimal cash conversion cycle values for minimal supply chain costs on working capital constrained by liquidity and profitability target levels.

The aim of the study was to develop an optimisation method for management of current assets of an industrial enterprise by the concept of logistics supply chains. The ways of acceleration of working capital turnover at the stages of supply, production and marketing of goods and services have been identified. The necessity of applying the concept of supply chain management to working capital management has been justified. This allowed defining the management principles in the supply chain of an industrial enterprise. As a result, a method for optimization of enterprise current assets of an industrial enterprise as a central element of a supply chain has been offered. It has been proved that the presented method makes it possible to determine the effect of working capital acceleration both in the material and financial subsystems. A tool for realisation of this effect is the structuring of working capital by title deeds.

In recent years, the topic of supply chain finance has gained a lot of attention from academia, but still, there are a lot of unexplored areas. For example, the literature demonstrates a clear gap of adequate application of numerous supply chain finance solutions for collaborative working capital management (Gelsomino et al., 2019). This issue becomes more and more important, specifically in terms of globalization and growing competition between supply chains when liquidity and profitability improvement is of paramount relevance. Companies focusing on their individual supply chain issues and taking their own interests into account rather than understanding the whole supply chain and collaborating with their partners are missing fruitful areas for improvements (Wuttke et al., 2016). The authors address this gap by developing a model for collaborative working capital management through supply chain finance adoption for the case of the three-stage supply chain. At the same time, the process of working capital optimization is received as a multi-objective problem. The results obtained indicate that the model of working capital optimization with concurrent use of multiple supply chain finance solutions is able to provide an optimal solution for all the cases considered in the research. It allows to decrease the total financial costs on working capital and supply chain finance solutions making individual ones not worse and at the same time achieve greater liquidity.

The paper investigates what effect Working Capital Management has on firms’ profitability by using the data from listed companies on Vietnamese Stock Exchange. The sample is collected from 127 public companies for the period of 9 years from 2006 to 2014. The research uses four variables to represent Working Capital Management, which are Day of Sales Outstanding (DSO), Day Sales of Inventories (DSI), Day of Payables Outstanding (DPO), and Cash Conversion Cycle (CCC). Moreover, in order to robust the result, the study also takes into the account the following variables: “Leverage, Growth, Tangibility, Size, Industrial Factors, and Macroeconomic Effects”, which were proven to have significant effects on firms’ profitability. The result implies that there is no correlation between Working Capital Management and firms’ profitability. Hence the conclusion is that Working Capital Management can help companies solve the short-term obligations and improve the efficiency by improving the supply chain and credit policies, however it has nothing to do with firms’ profitability of the companies in the sample.

The issue of adequate application of quantitative supply chain (SCF) solutions for cooperative working capital management becomes more and more important in terms of globalization and growing competition between supply chains (SCs). Authors address the problem by developing models for cooperative working capital management (WCM) through SCF adoption for the case of the three-stage supply chain. The grounding for the optimization is multicriteria approach. The multi-objective working capital optimization model (Ivakina et al., 2021) allows to nd optimal solution regardless initial financial and liquidity position of SC. In the article, we use this model to quantitatively implement a multi-objective working capital management strategy on the cases of real supply chains. The results obtained in the paper indicate that the model of working capital optimization with concurrent use of multiple supply chain finance solutions can provide an optimal solution for all the cases considered in the research. It allows to decrease the total financial costs on working capital and supply chain finance solutions making individual ones not worse and at the same time achieve greater liquidity.

Working capital is an important component in the financial decision of the company. An optimal working capital management is reached through a trade off between profitability and liquidity. This study aims to provide empirical evidence about the effects of working capital management on the profitability of 386 Tunisian export SMEs observed from 2001 to 2008. The results of fixed and random effects models show a negative relationship between corporate profitability and the different working capital components. This reveals that Tunisian export SMEs should shorten their cash conversion cycle by reducing the number of days of accounts receivable and inventories to increase their profitability.

AbstractThis study aims to determine the effect of working capital management on firm value. Corporate governance is used as a moderating variable in this study to explore the role of corporate governance in the relationship between working capital management with corporate values. Program participants of Corporate Governance Perception Index (CGPI) are used as a sample during the period from 2003 to 2011 and listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX). We were using simple linear regression and the testing of moderating effects were calculated by Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA). The results showed that the working capital management has an influence on the value of the firm. However, corporate governance variables failed to moderate the relationship between working capital management and enterprise value. It shows that companies and investors in the market still lack concern for the program response and Corporate Governance Perception Index (CGPI) as an assessment of the application of the principles of corporate governance that has been done by the company .Keywords: Working Capital Management, Cash Conversion Cycle, Corporate Governance, Firm Values

Purpose This paper aims to provide a review of the existing literature available on working capital (WC) and working capital management (WCM). Design/methodology/approach A systematic literature review (SLR) methodology is used to review 187 articles selected from referred journals, books and international conferences for the period 1980-2017. Findings This comprehensive review reveals that much of the focus in the existing literature is paid on investigating the empirical relationship between WCM and firm performance. Furthermore, the attention has been paid towards studying the WC practices. The behavioural aspects, qualitative studies, survey studies and systematic theory development have been ignored in most of the prior studies. These areas have a broader scope for future research. Research limitations/implications This study is based on literature review and theoretical in nature. Therefore, it does not have any empirical results. Practical implications So far, a limited literature review studies have been conducted in WCM perspective. This review provides various emerging trends, which may be considered in future research for providing a deep understanding of WCM. Originality/value This is the first time a detailed review of WCM literature has been conducted by using SLR for the period of 1980-2017. This review will be useful for researchers, business policymaker, finance professionals and all other having direct or indirect concerns with WCM study.
