Purpose: to found the relationship between the obtained postoperative visual acuity, the increase in visual acuity in the lines and the subjective satisfaction of patients with the results of the operation.Material and methods. The study included 165 patients (186 eyes) who received cataract phacoemulsification surgery with IOL implantation (n = 170) or refractive lensectomy with IOL implantation (n = 16). The average age of the subjects was 70.23 ± 10.14 years. The group included patients without concomitant systemic or ophthalmic pathology, without previous surgical interventions in the eye for any purpose. At least 1 month after the operation, patients filled out a questionnaire in order to find out the subjective satisfaction with the treatment (scale from 0 to 4 points). The results of the questionnaire were compared with postoperative BCVA, and increased vision (postoperative BCVA — preoperative BCVA). Preoperative BCVA — Me 0.4 (Q1–Q3: 0.1–0.68), postoperative BCVA — Me 1.0 (Q1–Q3: 0.95–1.0), increased vision — Me 0.6 (Q1–Q3: 0.3–0.9) according to Snellen’s table.Results. Visual acuity in satisfaction subgroups: 0 points — Me 1.0 (Q1–Q3: 0.9–1.0) / n = 5 (2.7 %); 1 point — 1 case, postoperative BCVA 1.16 (0.5 %); 2 points — Me 0.95 (Q1–Q3: 0.84–1.0) / n = 14 (7.5 %); 3 points — Me 1.0 (Q1–Q3: 0.9–1.16) / n = 57 (30.6 %); 4 points — Me 1.0 (Q1–Q3: 0.96–1.0) / n = 109 (58.6 %). Postoperative BCVA and increased in visual acuity do not have statistically significant differences depending on satisfaction with treatment (p > 0.05). The correlation between postoperative BCVA and satisfaction is not statistically significant (p = 0.65; rxy = 0.136), as well as between vision improvement and satisfaction (p = 0.55; rxy = 0.141).Conclusion. There was a lack of a statistically significant relationship between postoperative BCVA and improved vision with subjective patient satisfaction with treatment. Identification of factors affecting subjective assessment requires a deeper analysis. Practicing ophthalmologists should remember the importance of the dialogue between the doctor and the patient at the preoperative stage, informing the patient about the expected results of the operation and the possible course after the operation period.

Aim: To evaluate the retinal light scattering, visual acuity, refraction and subjective satisfaction in patients after implantation of Acrysof IQ PanOptix intraocular lens. Methods: Our group included 32 eyes of 21 patients who underwent cataract surgery or refractive lensectomy with Acrysof IQ PanOptix multifocal intraocular lens implantation at the Ophthalmology Clinic of Faculty Hospital Hradec Králové during the time from September 2015 to December 2017. The observed parameters were visual acuity, subjective refraction, retinal light scattering and patient‘ subjective satisfaction. Preoperative refractive values and visual acuity values were compared with results obtained on day 1, 1 month and at an average of 27 months postoperatively. Subjective satisfaction and degree of light scattering on the retina were evaluated at the end of the follow-up period. Results: Preoperative, uncorrected distant visual acuity improved from an average of 0,51 ± 0,29 (expressed in decimal values) to 0,94 ± 0,10 at the end of the follow-up period. Preoperative best-corrected distance visual acuity improved from an average of 0,95 ± 0,19 to 1,00 ± 0,09 at the end of the follow-up period. The mean value of preoperative uncorrected near visual acuity was 8,29 ± 4,93 of Jaeger charts, the mean value of uncorrected near visual acuity at the end of the follow-up period was 1,00 ± 0 of Jaeger charts. Subjective satisfaction was assessed using a standardized VF-14 questionnaire at least 1 year after surgery (mean follow-up of 27 months). Retinal light scattering was examined using an Oculus C-Quant instrument. The retinal light scattering value in our sample was 1,12 ± 0,19. In only 6 eyes of 4 patients, the resulting value was outside the physiological range used for eyes with lens crystallina Conclusion: The value of light scattering on the retina is a factor affecting the degree of sensitivity to glare after implantation of multifocal intraocular lenses. In our group, we observed a deviation from the physiological range of retinal light scattering in only 6 eyes of 4 patients, but this did not lead to a deterioration in subjective postoperative satisfaction.

AIM: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of the modified skin re-draping epicanthoplasty procedure for correction of recurrent lower lid epiblepharon in Chinese children. METHODS: From 2016 to 2018, 18 children (10 males and 8 females, average age 6.2±1.7y; 30 eyes) with recurrent epiblepharon who attended Beijing Children’s Hospital were included in the study. All the children had undergone lower eyelid surgery for epiblepharon. Surgical design included using an additional incision along the upper palpebral margin, to avoid vertical scarring on the upper lid. The re-draping method was used to correct recurrent epiblepharon. Follow-up ranged from 3 to 24mo. Postoperative surgical outcomes, complications, and subjective satisfaction were evaluated. RESULTS: Complete correction of cilia touching the cornea was observed in all patients during an average follow-up of 7.1mo. No “dog ears” or obvious scars were formed after surgery. All parents were satisfied with the cosmetic results and none complained. Mean astigmatism decreased from 2.39±0.79 diopter (D) preoperatively to 2.19±0.79 D at 6mo after surgery; however, the difference was not significant. Best-corrected visual acuity improved, although the change in mean visual acuity was not significant. No recurrence occurred during the follow-up period. CONCLUSION: This surgical modified skin re-draping technique is effective and highly satisfactory for correction of recurrent epiblepharon. The approach is characterized by a simple design, a straightforward procedure, inconspicuous scarring, and good postoperative appearance.

The Study of Medical Testing for Cataract Surgery was a randomized clinical trial in patients scheduled to undergo elective cataract surgery to determine whether routine medical testing before cataract surgery reduced the rate of complications during the perioperative period. The study showed that routine preoperative medical testing before cataract surgery does not reduce the risk of intraoperative or postoperative adverse medical events when compared to selective or no testing, nor does it reduce the rate of ocular surgical complications (such as posterior capsule rupture) or influence visual acuity outcome. The authors recommended that preoperative clinical assessment by a physician at least 7 days before surgery is a more logical and efficient approach. Tests should be ordered only when indicated by the history or findings on physical examination.
