We performed a comparative study of birds in Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary (TWS), Inani Reserve Forest (IRF) and the Chittagong University Campus (CUC) in 2015.  A total of 249 species belonging to 50 families were recorded: 210 species from 46 families in TWS, 187 species from 45 families in IRF, and 182 species from 45 families in CUC.  Of these, 181 species (73%) were resident, 57 (23%) winter visitors, three (1.20%) summer visitors, two (0.80%) passage migrants and five (2%) vagrants.  According to their frequency of occurrence, 73 species (29.32%) were very common, 66 (26.5%) common, 62 (25%) uncommon and 48 (19%) rare. 120 species (48%) were passerines (97 in TWS, 95 in IRF and 97 in CUC) and 129 (52%) non-passerines (113 in TWS, 92 in IRF and 85 in CUC). Among the three areas, TWS had the greatest diversity in terms of total species, (210˃187˃182), residents (161˃148˃134), non-residents (49˃48˃39), forest indicator birds (47˃44˃31) and wading birds (48˃34˃24).


The present paper describes the application of GIS to study the spatial and temporal variations of some important water quality parameters in the Veeranam tank drainage basin of cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, South India. The water quality parameters were depicted by various colour combinations for different ranges of concentrations. Twenty four (24) groundwater samples were collected from bore wells for two different seasons, pre monsoon in July 2015 and postmonsoon in January 2016. The collected water samples were analyzed for chemical constituents, such as chloride, sulphate, bicarbonate, carbonate, nitrate, sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium in the laboratory, by following the standard procedures described by the American Public Health Association (APHA 1998). Spatial distribution map for Electrical conductivity, Hardness, Calcium, Magnesium, Sulphate and Chloride in pre-monsoon and post monsoon samples was generated by ArcGIS 9.3 software. The study implies that the quality of groundwater is generally good and potable in the nearby Veeranam lake and the quality becomes moderate as it passes away from Veeranam tank of the study area.

South-West (SW), North-East (NE) and Post-monsoon Cauvery River sediment geochemistry characterizes the intensity of chemical weathering ascribing to the relative mobility of elements during weathering. The negative correlation between Al2O3% and SiO2% signifies that the sediments are enriched with quartz and, Al2O3% vs. TiO2% relationship deduces the granite and granodiorite are the major source rocks of Cauvery River sediment. The weathering trend of Cauvery River sediments is accounted by the incidence of illite clay minerals. The weathering intensity of SW monsoon sediments (57.73%), NE monsoon sediments (64.17%) and post-monsoon sediments (64.79%) specifies the weak to intermediate intensity of weathering, which is controlled by precipitation. The higher concentration of Ba (459.45-856.95ppm) symbolises the presence of K-feldspar.

Soa papanasam sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on both sexes from Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve and Meghamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu, India. It differs from all other known species of Soa, by hindwing vein R1 originating proximal to vein M1 and distal to M2. This is the first species of the genus Soa described from India.

The Grizzled Giant Squirrel (GGS) Ratufa macroura (Pennant, 1769) is a ‘Near Threatened’ and endemic giant squirrel distributed in southern India and Sri Lanka. In India, the species is distributed in more than 10 locations between Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka in the north and Srivilliputhur Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu in the south. A study was conducted in the riparian habitats of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala to understand the habitat characteristics, including the drey site use of GGS. The vegetation of the GGS habitat was studied using the quadrat method, and the dreys were counted using the transects.  A total of 95 species of trees were identified from the riverine vegetation, and the GGS used 36 species of trees for drey construction. Most of the dreys were found on Mangifera indica, Terminalia arjuna, Ficus microcarpa, Diospyros ebenum, and Pongamia pinnata. However, the GGS may prefer trees such as Mitragyna parviflora, Diospyros ebenum, Ficus microcarpa, Albizia procera, Acacia nilotica, and Acacia leucophloea for drey construction. The study also highlights the usage of large trees with extensive crown by the GGS for various activities such as feeding, resting, moving, and nesting, thus signifying the necessity for protecting the remaining riverine habitat at Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary to ensure the long-term conservation of GGS. We recommend an urgent restoration by restocking with already existing, native tree species of the riverine habitat due to the extremely poor regeneration of trees in the riverine habitat that support the only population of the GGS in Kerala.

Impatiens palniensis and I.tamilnadense are two new species described and illustrated from the Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu, India. Impatiens palniensis collected from Palni hills (Kodaikkanal Wildlife Sanctuary) whereas I. tamilnadense from Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary.   The detailed description of both taxa along with diagnostic characters between closely allied species, conservation status, pollen morphology and colour photographs are provided.
