A child, 5 years and 3 months old with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and severe problem behavior was taught to stop playing and move to the learning activities. The study demonstrates the result of 2 phases of skill-based treatment (SBT) developed by Dr. Gregory Hanley: a) relinquish reinforcement phase (CAB 1) and b) transition phase (CAB 2). This is an individual case analysis, the study was conducted in a multiple baseline design across behaviors, lasted 8 weeks, and included the measurements of problem behaviors and learned skills during each training trial. As a result of 15-hour training, the child was taught the skill of stopping the play and transition to the learning area. Learners’ responses as willingness to listen to a teacher and ready to learn have emerged. At the same time, dangerous problem behavior was reduced to zero during the transition from a preferred activity to a learning area while being instructed. Transition responses were spontaneously generalized with people who were not present in the classroom (parents, tutors) and transferred to the new conditions (home and pre-school).

Individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities are at risk of engaging in severe problem behavior, including aggression and self-injury. Severe problem behavior is an obstacle to proper education and integration into society. Therefore, eliminating severe problem behavior is key to long-term academic and social success. However, problem behavior can be persistent in the face of interventions and likely to relapse following successful intervention. This article describes basic and translational research relevant to understanding what influences the persistence and relapse of severe problem behavior in individuals diagnosed with ASD and other developmental disabilities. Investing in research to better understand persistence and relapse will pay dividends for clients, parents, clinicians, and society in general.

Introduction: The main objective of this study was to determine whether stimulus symmetry, or untaught generalized relations among stimuli, could be demonstrated using audio and tactile stimuli (i.e., nonvisual). Methods: A modified alternating treatment within a concurrent multiple baseline design across nonvisual stimulus sets (i.e., tactile and audio) was implemented with Zach, an 11-year-old male diagnosed with autism and visual impairment, to teach two relations (sound–touch and sound–label) among stimuli. Following training, the researcher tested whether Zach could identify stimuli through an untaught relation (touch–label). The study presented here required a week to complete and was conducted at a private school for individuals with behavioral concerns. Results: During baseline, Zach demonstrated low levels of correct responses (average of 7% across all relations) for all skills. In the training phase (for only two of the three targeted skills, sound–touch and sound–label relations), Zach demonstrated proficiency for most stimuli used in the sets (average of 61% across relations). Finally, in the testing phase (the untaught touch–label relation), Zach demonstrated high levels of generalized acquisition (89%). Discussion: Results indicated that the procedure used in this study could be generalized to novel populations, including those with visual impairments, and that different forms of sensory input could be used, including auditory and tactile-based teaching. Implications for practitioners: Individuals working with learners with differing levels of visual impairment could utilize the demonstrated procedure to associate types of stimuli, using methods other than visual input. The procedure outlined would benefit a population that may require assistance with developing language skills but who also may have difficulties using common visual stimuli.

Abstract This study implemented a modified teaching interaction procedure to teach social skills to 4 children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder with an intellectual disability. A multiple baseline design across social skills and replicated across participants was utilized to evaluate the effects of the modified teaching interaction procedure. The results demonstrated that the teaching interaction procedure resulted in all participants acquiring targeted social skills, maintaining the targeted social skills, and generalizing the targeted social skills.

The field of applied behavior analysis (ABA) has utilized telehealth for clinical supervision and caregiver consultation and has produced research providing evidence for the efficacy of both modalities. Research demonstrating effectiveness is crucial, as behavior analysts must ensure the services they provide are effective in order to be ethical. With the increased need for patients to access more telehealth direct services, the current study evaluated the efficacy of telehealth direct therapy to teach new skills to individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study examined the utility of natural environment teaching and discrete trial training strategies provided over a videoconferencing platform to teach new skills directly to eight individuals with ASD. The skills acquired by each individual were taught solely through telehealth direct therapy and included skills in the language, adaptive, and social domains. In a multiple baseline design, all eight individuals acquired mastery for all targets; additionally, generalization was assessed to caregivers for some targets. The evidence suggests that telehealth is a modality that is effective and can be considered for all patients when assessing the appropriate location of treatment.

Social participation of children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in natural environments can be enhanced by teaching them to communicate spontaneously, at least in situations where they have the motivation to access specific items or activities by controlling the amount of access for these stimuli. The purpose of this study was to determine if mand training, using a stimulus control transfer procedure would promote acquisition and generalization of mands for specific activities or objects evoked by motivating operations. Measurement variables included the frequency of motivation controlled (MO) versus multiply controlled mands during discrete trial training on a variety of verbal operants. Using a concurrent multiple baseline design across participants, visual analysis indicated that MO mands for out-of-view items increased substantially with generalization across targets, staff, and environments for three of the four participants. One participant did not respond to intervention to the same extent as others.
