The Chuo Shinkansen is a Japanese maglev line under construction between Tokyo and Osaka. On a central section of the line, construction has come to a standstill in 2020 for reasons of regional policy. This threatens the completion of the entire line. The article describes some of the interests triggering the underlying conflict. Some of the key points contained in the Japanese solution proposals are summarized. Overall, the opening of the high-speed maglev system is likely to be postponed by several years.

Many of the large number of underground works constructed or under construction in recent years are in unfavorable terrains facing unusual situations and construction conditions. This is the case of the subject under study in this paper: a tunnel excavated in evaporitic rocks that experienced significant karstification problems very quickly over time. As a result of this situation, the causes that may underlie this rapid karstification are investigated and a novel methodology is presented in civil engineering where the use of saturation indices for the different mineral specimens present has been crucial. The drainage of the rock massif of El Regajal (Madrid-Toledo, Spain, in the Madrid-Valencia high-speed train line) was studied and permitted the in-situ study of the hydrogeochemical evolution of water flow in the Miocene evaporitic materials of the Tajo Basin as a full-scale testing laboratory, that are conforms as a whole, a single aquifer. The work provides a novel methodology based on the calculation of activities through the hydrogeochemical study of water samples in different piezometers, estimating the saturation index of different saline materials and the dissolution capacity of the brine, which is surprisingly very high despite the high electrical conductivity. The circulating brine appears unsaturated with respect to thenardite, mirabilite, epsomite, glauberite, and halite. The alteration of the underground flow and the consequent renewal of the water of the aquifer by the infiltration water of rain and irrigation is the cause of the hydrogeochemical imbalance and the modification of the characteristics of the massif. These modifications include very important loss of material by dissolution, altering the resistance of the terrain and the increase of the porosity. Simultaneously, different expansive and recrystallization processes that decrease the porosity of the massif were identified in the present work. The hydrogeochemical study allows the evolution of these phenomena to be followed over time, and this, in turn, may facilitate the implementation of preventive works in civil engineering.

The characteristics and limitations of the buses, which are widely used nowadays, are analyzed in this paper. Because these buses don’t adapt to the high-reliability embedded computer system, a novel bus is proposed which is characterized by its high-reliability. And its capacity is reached through its unique datum’s dynamic reconfiguration mechanism. The basic architecture and communication protocol are presented in this paper. And then the key points during realization of this bus are discussed. Finally, the probably application scope and prospects are indicated.

More and more high-speed railway are under construction in China. The slow settlement along high-speed railway tracks and newly-built stations would lead to inhomogeneous deformation of local area, and the accumulation may be a threat to the safe operation of high-speed rail system. In this paper, surface deformation of the newly-built high-speed railway station as well as the railway lines in Shenyang region will be retrieved by time series InSAR analysis using multi-orbit COSMO-SkyMed images. This paper focuses on the non-uniform subsidence caused by the changing of local environment along the railway. The accuracy of the settlement results can be verified by cross validation of the results obtained from two different orbits during the same period.

- This article analyses the European Commission's efforts to encourage the development of efficient rail sector. The potential of railways for expanding their share of both passenger and freight transport was seriously limited by rail systems fragmented into national market shaped by national transport policies. The Commission stressed the importance of the necessary transformation of railway market that requires the following priorities: liberalization, free access market and competition, interoperability including both high speed and conventional rail networks. Heterogeneous and hybrid computing has been heavily studied in the field of parallel and distributed computing in recent years. It can work on a single computer, or in a group of computers connected by a high-speed network. The former is the topic of this chapter. Its key points are how to cooperatively use devices that are different in performance and architecture to satisfy various computing requirements, and how to make the whole program achieve the best performance possible when executed. CPUs and GPUs have fundamentally different design philosophies, but combining their characteristics could avail better performance in many applications. However, it is still a challenge to optimize them. This chapter focuses on the main optimization strategies including “partitioning and load-balancing”, “data access”, “communication”, and “synchronization and asynchronization”. Furthermore, two applications will be introduced as examples of using these strategies.

ABSTRACT Irreversible facial palsy, generally post-traumatic or postsurgical, can have devastating consequences for the patient from a functional, aesthetic, and psychological point of view. Among all of the reconstructive techniques, the hemihypoglossal-facial nerve transfer, which avoids the complete section of the hypoglossal nerve, is preferred by senior authors because of its excellent results and very low morbidity.1-5 This technique can be carried out in any neurosurgical center because it requires only basic instruments of microsurgery and a high-speed drill. However, detailed knowledge of the anatomy of the facial nerve in both its intrapetrosal and extracranial segments and of the hypoglossal nerve in its cervical segment is essential.1,6,7 Thus, previous practice in a cadaveric laboratory is recommended. The purpose of this video is to describe the technical nuances and key points of hemihypoglossal-facial nerve transfer. It was made using the surgical videos of 5 patients with a complete and irreversible facial paralysis who were operated using this technique in our institution between May and September 2019, all of whom consented to the procedure and to use for scientific purposes. The footages were edited, making a film in which the surgical technique is described in a stepwise fashion, emphasizing its most important features. To conclude, we would like to emphasize that the timing of surgery is of utmost importance and that this technique is both effective and reliable. Experiments are described in which cylindrical tubes were perforated normally at their central section. Quasi-static tests were performed using mainly square-section punches possessing pointed pyramidal heads of semi-angle 30 deg, the tubes being supported along their support generator. The dynamic tests comprised high-speed penetration of tubes using conically headed cylindrical projectiles. The equipment and experimental procedures are briefly described and results are presented showing typical punch load-penetration curves, the variation of punch load with tube length and that of a nondimensional characteristic punch load (defined later) with length-to-diameter ratio of the tubes. Typical specimens and the sequence of events during the course of a penetration process are also illustrated. The characteristics of petalling and plugging modes of failure together with those effects which are specifically dynamic in character are reported.
