ABSTRACTThe possibilities for making metallic foams or similar porous metal structures are reviewed. The various processes are classified according to the state of the starting metal - liquid, powdered, ionised. Liquid metal can be foamed directly by injecting gas, gas-releasing foaming agents or by producing supersaturated metal-gas solutions. Indirect methods include investment casting and usage of filler materials. Metal powders can also be used as starting materials for metallic foams: mixtures of such powders with foaming agents are compacted to foamable precursor materials that can be foamed in a second step. Instead of foaming agents inert gas can be directly entrapped in the precursor. Metal foams can also be made from metal powder slurries or by using polymer/powder mixtures. Finally, galvanic electro-deposition also allows to make highly porous metallic structures with open pores.

This paper reports experiments on silica coating formulations that are suitable for application as a thin pigment layer with foam coating technique on a paper web. To understand the foaming properties of nanosilica dispersions, the critical micelle concentration, foam half-life time, and foam bubble size stability were determined with three different foaming agents. The results indicate that the bubble stability measurement is a useful characterization method for foam coating purposes. Pilot foam coating trials were done and the effects of the chosen foaming agents were studied on the properties of the nanosilica-coated paper. The surface hydrophilicity of silica coated paper was related not only to silica pigment, but also to the chemical nature of the foaming agent. Standard paper properties were not affected by the thin silica coating.

AbstractFluorinated and photo-imageable precursors are synthesized through a Barbier-Grignard reaction for 1550-nm window. The precursors are used for the sol-gel process of integrated optic components for silica-on-silicon technology. Material compositions and process parameters are optimized to achieve internal absorptions >0.1 dB/cm and propagation losses of about 0.5 dB/cm at 1550 nm. Compact 1×16 Beam splitters are designed and fabricated which exhibit >0.3 dB power uniformity, >0.1 dB PDL and 1.5 dB coupling loss. By hybrid integration of the passive splitters and in-house fiber amplifiers, amplifying splitters are demonstrated at various signal intensities.
