Ariyalur is one of the districts in Tamilnadu it is rich in limestone resource. A study on geochemical characterization of ground water and its suitability for drinking purposes was carried out. Twenty five groundwater samples were collected from bore wells and open wells during Pre monsoon seasons of 2014. Groundwater is the main principle source for drinking, irrigation water and other activities in our study area. It is an indispensable source of our life. The problem of groundwater quality obtains high importance in this present-day, whether in the study area or any other countries in the world. The present study was carried out to analyse and evaluate the groundwater samples collected from residential areas of Udayarpalyam Taluk. The analyzed physicochemical parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, bicarbonate, sulphate, phosphates, chloride, nitrate, and fluoride are used to characterize the groundwater quality and its suitability for drinking uses. Calcium, sodium, chloride and sulphate are the dominant ions in the groundwater chemistry. The Groundwater is not suitable for drinking purposes at several locations in this area. Each parameter was compared with its standard permissible limit as prescribed by WHO/BIS. The analytical results indicated that the ground water quality was found unsatisfactory for drinking purpose in some location.

In the present study, fifty-five groundwater samples were collected from the parts of the Jalna district of Maharashtra, India. The water samples were analyzed to determine various physic-chemical parameters like pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, total hardness, alkalinity, chloride, sulphate, calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium. The groundwater’s geochemical control and hydrogeochemistry were evaluated using the Piper plots and water quality index (WQI). The hydrochemical analysis reveals that the groundwater is predominantly of CaNaHCO3 type, Water quality index (WQI) indicates that 33% and 2% of groundwater samples fall in poor and very poor categories for drinking purposes. This study reveals that groundwater quality is unfit for drinking purposes at a few places. The effective leaching, dissolution process and rock-water interaction process are the main sources for degrading the groundwater quality.

The aim of this study was to assess the ground water quality of Daur Taluka of district Shaheed Benazir Abad for drinking purposes. Forty groundwater samples were collected from different locations and brought to Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) for analyzing various groundwater physical, chemical and biological parameters. The results of this study revealed that color, pH, magnesium, alkalinity and nitrate of all samples were found within the permissible limits of World Health Organization (WHO). Analytical results revealed that the percentage of samples that were beyond WHO standards was 15% regarding taste, 42.5% regarding TDS, 20% regarding chlorine, 12.5% regarding sulfate 12.5 regarding sodium and 32.5% regarding hardness. Microbiological contamination was found positive in the 25% of samples. The findings of this study revealed that the most (82.5%) of the samples of the study area belong to the category of hard to very hard water and their nature were alkaline.

<div> <p>This paper presents an assessment of the impact of uncontrolled and unscientific disposal of MSW on ground water in Dhanbad city, India. In this study, ground water quality around municipal solid waste disposal sites was investigated. Ground water quality analysis was carried out on samples collected at various distances from two disposal sites. The study has revealed that the ground water quality near dumping sites does not conform to the drinking water quality standards as per IS:10500. The impacts of indiscriminate dumping activity on ground water appeared most clearly as high concentrations of total dissolved solids, electrical conductivity, chlorides, chemical oxygen demand, and sulphates. High amount of metals like Na, K, Ca, Mg, Cd, Cu, Ni, Fe, Zn and Mn has also been detected in the groundwater samples near dumping area. Leachate characterization study also reveals high potential for groundwater contamination. Presence of feacal coliform contamination in groundwater samples indicates potential health risk for individuals exposed to this water.&nbsp;</p> </div> <p>&nbsp;</p>

A groundwater quality assessment has been carried out in northeast part of Anbar governorate in western Iraq. We analyzed hydrochemical parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids presence of ions to describe groundwater quality. The study area has the only confined aquifer within the geological formation extended in area. Values of groundwater hydrochemical parameters were ranged from (7) to (7.9) for ph, (1599) to (6800) µmhos/cm for electrical conductivity (EC) and (1048) to (4446) mg/l for total dissolved solids (TDS). The origins and types of groundwater in the area were of marine origin and MgCl2 water type while only (6) samples were of continental origin and Na2SO4 water type. Groundwater utilization indicated that it can't be used for drinking purposes, while few groundwater wells can be used for agricultural and (33) groundwater samples can be used for animal purposes. However, the nature of the soil in the area and the depth of the groundwater qualified water for agricultural uses in significant and wide ranges.

Abstract Groundwater quality alludes to the state of the water that is arranged under the Earth's surface. Groundwater can accumulate in breaks in subsurface rocks and the centre of soil particles. Since various blends can break down in water and others can be suspended in water, there is a potential for pollution with harmful mixes including significant particles like Electrical Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and many others i.e. Ca, Cl, F, Mg, NO3, SO4, and Total Hardness. This study examines Groundwater Quality in the study area of the South-West zone of Surat city, Gujarat. The South-West zone of Surat city is situated on the shoreline, causes the groundwater of the concerned area highly affected by seawater intrusion. The present study determines the Ground Water Quality Index (GWQI) from the year 2006 to 2015. It also predicts the approximate ground water quality for the next 10 years. The outcome of this study suggests the need of certain improvement in ground water quality by an appropriate method such as Managed Aquifer Recharging (MAR). It will be beneficial for the people mainly dependent on the ground water, particularly living near the coastal region.

Urbanization, industrialization, and increase in population lead to depletion of ground water quantity and also deteriorate the ground water quality. Madurai city is one of the oldest cities in India. In this chapter the ground water quality was assessed using various statistical techniques. Groundwater samples were collected from 11 bore wells and 5 dug wells in Post-monsoon season during 2002. Samples were analysed for physico-chemical characterization in the laboratory. Around 17 physico-chemical parameters were analysed for all the samples. The descriptive statistical analysis was done to understand the correlation between each parameter. Cluster Analysis was carried out to identify the most affected bore well and dug well in the Madurai city.

Ground water samples collected from different localities in and around Gobichettipalayam town, Erode District, Tamil Nadu were analyzed for their physico- chemical characteristics. This analysis result was compared with the WHO & ICMR standards of drinking water quality parameters with the following water quality parameters namely pH, Electrical conductivity, CN-, Cl-, SO42-, Na+, K+, Ca & Mg in CaCO3equivalents, phenolphthalein alkalinity, hydroxide alkalinity, carbonate alkalinity, bicarbonate alkalinity, total alkalinity, total dissolved solids, total solids, total suspended solids, calcium, magnesium, total hardness, dissolved oxygen, fluorideetc., The usefulness of these parameters in predicting ground water quality characteristics were discussed. Thus an attempt has been made to find the quality of ground water in and around Gobichettipalayam town, suitable for drinking purposes or not.
