Profound demographic changes as well as the introduction of religious freedom or convictions of conscience legislation in some states has made it more important than ever to equip undergraduate social work students with the knowledge and skills necessary to convey genuine empathy to clients and client groups who are stigmatized or oppressed and to use this empathic understanding to shape public policy. This article discusses the importance of enhancing current empathy training programs for undergraduate social work students by including content on implicit bias and several empirically supported strategies, including mindfulness practices, that are effective in reducing implicit bias and fostering empathy for members of stigmatized outgroups. This article concludes with an overview of instruments designed to identify, assess, and measure all aspects of interpersonal empathy and social empathy.

Purpose: This article presents a systematic review of research regarding how best to educate social work students and practitioners concerning of the process of evidence-based practice and/or the application of empirically supported treatments (ESTs). Method: We conducted a systematic review with a narrative synthesis, largely following the Cochrane Handbook of Systematic Reviews for Interventions and PRISMA reporting guidelines for systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Results: Twenty-seven studies met our eligibility criteria. These consisted mostly of uncontrolled designs and their measures relied mainly on learners’ self-perception regarding acquisition of declarative and procedural knowledge, motivation, and satisfaction. Reports were mostly positive (88.7%). Conclusions: Research regarding the education of social work students and practitioners about the process of evidence-based practice as well as ESTs is limited. Further investigation is needed concerning the effectiveness of specific teaching methods using controlled designs and more rigorous outcome measures including observation of practice in real-life situations and/or in role-plays.

These questions cannot be answered unless characteristics of the social scene are revealed and the way this context has been influencing the learning processes that take place in universities. Hence, it is critical to begin the analysis from the latter point, to continue the reflection around the first question and then the second, to end with some thoughts which aim to open new reflective paths. Social work training oriented specifically toward the visually handicapped is not widely available in schools of social work, and it is consequently the responsibility of rehabilitative agencies to provide such training programs. A fieldwork program at an unidentified state center for the visually handicapped is described under the headings of seven “themes” or dimensions of training.
