Teaching and learning how to program are not easy tasks. Disapproval and dropout rates are a concern for everyone concerned with the topic. Therefore, it is necessary to look for strategies that improve the motivation of students who start a programming course, also improving success rates and decreasing dropout rates. The inverted class model, or flipped classroom, has been used in several experiments, showing very good results. The objectives of this teaching-learning technique is to change the traditional order: students have contact with new subjects before the classroom, using videos, texts or other material, as well as small online tests to check their knowledge. In this way, the face-to-face classes are reserved for discussion, doubts and application of previously acquired knowledge. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the scientific production on Flipped classrooms in introductory programming courses indexed in Elsevier’s Scopus. The sample is composed by 45 articles in total. The results obtained by bibliometric analysis showed when and where those documents are published, who are the authors and what is the focus of said articles. We also analyzed the most cited documents. We made a summary of the articles, namely in what refers to the sample size of the experiences, which programming language is used, in which universities the articles are made, which technology is used, as well as which methods are used in order to create inverted classes and which are the objectives and results of these experiences reported on the articles.. We managed to get a global view of the theme, getting a strong analysis for those who want to use flipped classrooms for teaching programming.

Flipped classrooms have been extensively used by many educators all over the world and are being seen as an alternative to the traditional classroom-based teaching-learning practices. As for traditional classrooms, face-to-face learning has not brought the personalization of learning capacity, time, attitude, behavior and interests to learners and has not exposed them to experimental activities. The flipped classrooms, on the other hand, enable students to be flexible in their learning and offer more time to go through videos, lectures posted on the Internet, which helps students to acquire the lessons through online learning systems. Flipped classrooms help create environment for more interaction between learners and instructors/facilitators, especially by creating the face-to-face conversations more interactive. However, teaching using flipped classrooms requires adequate additional resources such as; the effective online learning systems, databases, appropriate learning contents and methods, plan, presentations (in various forms like PowerPoint, word, scrom, video, audio) and most importantly minimum technical knowledge for both learners and instructors to use varieties of tools. This paper presents the construction of an environment supporting students to take part in an online activity before and after face-to-face interaction and organization of experimental teaching with the process of learning in groups based on the model of flipped classrooms to facilitate active learning. The quantitative results at the end of the course showed that the flipped learning is highly preferred and useful pedagogical approach when compared to those traditional methods that fostered better learning attitude and behaviors.

It is no longer news that the novel Corona Virus pandemic (COVID-19) is ravaging and still destroying the world, killing so many people and sending economies in different countries into recession. COVID-19 came as a thief in the night in the household of traditional schooling. Gradually, the face-to-face traditional way of teaching and learning was immediately put on hold and all parties running to their shelves for cover as measure to avert the spread of the dreaded virus. What came up as a viable alternative to face-to-face or conventional mode of teaching-learning in school and higher institution is E-learning. So many of these educational institutions had to resort to learning through some E-learning platforms which include ZOOM, YouTube, Google Meet, Google Classroom, Duo, Free Conference Call, etc. This established the fact that majority of the organizations have made an instant switch to online collaboration inclusive of schooling systems. This paper therefore sort to examine how Nigerian schools are reshaping the schooling/education system as to align with the alternative model of teaching-learning most essentially as E-learning rest on major pillars which are undoubtedly deficient in Nigeria and amongst Nigerians. There are challenges to overcome in achieving the e-learning phenomenon in Nigeria, many students without reliable internet access, power supply and technology struggle to participate in digital activities, which hinder online learning. The paper was approached in an E-learning subscriber or user point of view around FCT Abuja metropolis which includes teachers and learners (students/pupils). Questionnaires were distributed to the E-learning users and also the teachers of E-learning. Data were collected and analyzed using percentage method and Likert method to arrive at a conclusion and useful recommendations were made to enhance e-learning during and post COVID-19 in the various educational institutions in Nigeria.

This article reviews literature on the use of virtual learning environments by highlighting their potential and the challenges of introducing the same in Tanzania. It introduces the concept of virtual learning environments by demonstrating their applications to support teaching and learning. The article discusses the use of virtual learning environments in teaching information literacy courses by highlighting the success of using such tools in facilitating the teaching of information literacy courses to library users. In this review, special emphasis is placed on attempts by Tanzanian institutions of higher learning to introduce web-based teaching of information literacy and the challenges faced. The review reveals the need for Tanzanian institutions of higher learning to develop virtual learning environments to facilitate the teaching of information literacy courses to students and faculty so as to reach many of those who may not manage to attend the face-to-face information literacy sessions that are offered by librarians on a regular basis.

High failure and dropout rates are reported in introductory programming (IP) courses in different studies despite extensive research attempting to address the issue. In this study, we introduced an ADRI (Approach, Deployment, Result, Improvement) approach in the teaching and learning process of an IP course to improve learning and success rates. All three entities of the didactic triangle (student, instructor, and content) were involved in the research to better understand and execute the proposed approach. The IP course materials were redesigned based on the ADRI approach, and an editor was developed to promote the new approach and encourage students to complete the various stages required in the approach. Two surveys were conducted, and final exam grades over four semesters were compared with determine the impact of including the ADRI approach in the course. We concluded that the ADRI approach provides a positive impact on outcomes that the students achieved during the course. It engages students in practicing their programming skills and provides a new presentation style for examples and exercises which discourages students from taking programming shortcuts. It not only helps to reduce the failure and, significantly, the dropout rates from the IP course but also impacts positively on all students who passed the IP course.

Flipped classroom is an educational technique in which content is delivered online for students to study at their own pace in preparation for in-class learning. Benefits include increased flexibility, enhanced student engagement and satisfaction, and more effective use of time spent during face-to-face teaching. However, the development and implementation of flipped classroom teaching are also associated with challenges, including time required to develop learning materials and getting students to engage with the preparatory work. This teaching tip describes a structured approach to designing and implementing the flipped classroom approach for clinical skills to allow a greater focus on practicing the hands-on skills and the provision of feedback during the laboratory session. First, the rationale for flipping the classroom and the expected benefits should be considered. On a practical level, decisions need to be made about what to include in the flipped component, how it will complement the face-to-face class, and how the resources will be created. In the design phase, adopting a structured template and aligning with established pedagogical principles is helpful. A well-designed flipped classroom motivates learners by including different elements such as quality educational media (e.g., videos), the opportunity to self-assess, and well-defined connections to relevant knowledge and skills. Student engagement with the flipped material can be promoted through different strategies such as clear communication to manage student expectations and adapting the delivery of the face-to-face component. Finally, gathering feedback and evaluating the initiative are important to inform future improvements.

Abstract Active methodologies have been widely used in education to provide greater involvement in the teaching-learning process. In the face of the current pandemic scenario, remote activities are strategies to spread knowledge but require adaptations of face-to-face education. However, no records were found of its use to support research groups, which traditionally are based on personal contacts. The article reports the experience of selecting participants in the development of research in the area of starch prospecting, with an adaptation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) technique. The proposed problem was the characterization and evaluation of cassava starch for food industries application, using a sample limited to one gram. The PBL technique used research with a qualitative approach, applied nature, descriptive objective, and action research procedures. The five members that constituted the discussion group were from different professional areas and were selected among those who made up a larger group, with starch as the central theme. The PBL technique was adapted to be completed in three videoconference meetings, with intervals of 15 days. Based on the suggestions proposed and improved during the event, it was possible to outline the solution right at the first meeting. An analytical methodology can also be established within the specified limit, capable of prospecting its food industries application. Therefore, PBL as a strategic tool to develop research topics proved effective and flexible, and suitable for remote activities. It is recommended that it be better explored as a team leader and scientific research growth.

"In the context in which the teaching, learning, and assessment processes take place in the online environment, the question arises whether the currently organized learning situations are as effective as the learning situations carried out in the classroom, before the beginning of the pandemic. One of the disadvantages of online learning is related to the teacher’s low control over students’ activity. Factors such as initiative, creativity, efficient time management, intrinsic motivation, responsibility, and intellectual curiosity play an important role in students’ success in learning activities. Attendance at courses should not be formal and superficial and should be a process that involves the active and interactive participation of the students in the learning process. Providing high-quality educational opportunities to all students is a goal that is increasingly difficult to achieve in the context of the absence of face-to-face interactions. Also, applying a curriculum focused on the needs of the learner is becoming hard to achieve. Through this research, we aim to investigate issues related to how online learning takes place and to establish ways in which we can increase the efficiency of current teaching and learning processes. The study revealed that in the opinion of most of the students, the current epidemiological context has influenced in a negative way the quality of teaching and the student-teacher educational relationship. The study and investigation around educational models and teaching and learning methodologies is a theme that has long aroused the interest of the academic environment in higher education, both in the period before the advent of digital technology, as in current times in which technology is strongly embedded in the various teaching and learning processes, which involve classroom and distance-learning classes and courses, both in the context of e-learning and b-learning. Understanding how people learn and understand the themes presented in the classroom in face-to-face and e-learning is fundamental for planning and implementing processes that allow teachers to apply teaching and learning methodologies that can be efficient and effective. The main objective is to carry out a critical reflection on b-learning teaching, about the implementation of the teaching and learning methodology of the flipped classroom, one of the variants of b-learning teaching, supported by the results of a field investigation carried out with 152 students (n=152) of higher education.

The emergence and global spread of COVID-19 has disrupted the traditional mechanisms of education throughout the world. Institutions of learning were caught unprepared and this jeopardised the face-to-face method of curriculum delivery and assessment. Teaching institutions have shifted to an asynchronous mode whilst attempting to preserve the principles of integrity, equity, inclusiveness, fairness, ethics, and safety. A framework of assessment that enables educators to utilise appropriate methods in measuring a student’s progress is crucial for the success of teaching and learning, especially in health education that demands high standards and comprises consistent scientific content. Within such a framework, this paper aims to present a narrative review of the currently utilised methods of assessment in health education and recommend selected modalities that could be administered in an asynchronous mode during the COVID-19 pandemic. Assessment methods such as open-ended short answer questions, problem-based questions, oral exams, and recorded objective structured clinical exams (OSCE) would be appropriate for use in an asynchronous environment to assess the knowledge and competence of health professional students during COVID-19. Fairness and integrity can be ensured by using technological tools such as video and audio recording surveillance.
