<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> <span lang="EN-IN">The voice is the main form of communication between humans and the nasal and sinusal cavity participates in the resonance process. An alteration in the nasal diameter can produce changes in the voice. The objective of this study was to relate the degree of nasal obstruction measured by the SNOT 20 questionnaire to the acoustic analysis of the voice. </span></p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> <span lang="EN-IN">58 non-smoker volunteers without laryngeal pathology where included, 25 women (43%) and 33 men (57%). The average age was 22.1 years (±1.7). The laryngopharyngeal reflux and SNOT20 questionnaires were applied together with an acoustic analysis, we measured fundamental frequency, Jitter and Shimmer. The analysis was done separating in groups by sex and by SNOT score (less than 20 points and equal or higher than 20).  </span></p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> <span lang="EN-IN">The average of SNOT questionnaire was 15.06 (±11.8), we found no relation between the scores of the SNOT20 questionnaire with Jitter, fundamental frequency, Shimmer or voice intensity (p≥0.01). When separated by groups, the analysis by sex or by scores (SNOT &gt; or &lt; than 20 groups) did not show a statistically significant relationship. </span></p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> <span lang="EN-IN">In this study we did not find a relation between changes in acoustic analysis in Fundamental frequency, Jitter and Shimmer and the degree of nasal obstruction measured by SNOT 20. The groups of gender and severity of SNOT did not show relationship. More studies are necessary in order to evaluate the relation of nasal obstruction and the acoustic analysis of the voice.</span></p><p> </p>

The aim of the study was to find whether a muscle-sparing uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) and tonsillectomy cause a measurable change in the voice. The fundamental frequency and the first two formants of five sustained vowels were measured before and nine (six to 15) months following operation. The operation consisted of tonsillectomy and UPPP with preservation of the musculature of the soft palate. All patients received a pre- and post-operative 12-canal polysomnography (level-I sleep study). No patient showed signs of any post-operative velopharyngeal insufficiency. Acoustic analysis showed a significant raising of the fundamental frequency of up to 10 Hz. There was also a lowering of the second formant in two of the five vowels. This was correlated with the volume of the excised tissue. The minimal changes will probably have no significance for those who place no special reliance on their voice, but the possible post-operative changes should be made clear to singers and those relying on their voice for professional reasons.

AbstractIn order to evaluate the vocal quality of tracheo-oesophageal and oesophageal speech, several objective acoustic parameters were measured in the acoustic waveform (fundamental frequency, waveform perturbation) and in the frequency spectrum (harmonic prominence, spectral slope). Twelve patients using tracheo-oesophageal speech (with the Provox® valve) and 12 patients using oesophageal speech for at least two months, participated.The main results were that tracheo-oesophageal voices more often showed a detectable fundamental frequency, and that this fundamental frequency was fairly stable; there was also a tendency to more clearly defined harmonics in tracheo-oesophageal speech. This suggests a more regular vibratory pattern in the pharyngo-oesophageal segment, due to the more efficient respiratory drive in tracheo-oesophageal speech. So, a better quality of the voice can be expected, in addition to the longer phonation time and higher maximal intensity.

This paper aims to analyze the acoustic characteristics of initial consonant voicing perturbation of the fundamental frequency of oral vowels and nasal vowels of Ban Doi Pwo Karen. Three age groups of informants were selected: over-sixty years old (>60), middle aged (35-45), and under-twenty years old (<20). The acoustic analysis method was employed to analyze the mean vowel duration (msec), mean vowel amplitude (dB), and mean vowel fundamental frequency (Hz). The results show that voiceless initial consonants tend to cause a lower fundamental frequency than that of the voiced initial consonants. This has excited controversy concerning the tonogenesis theory of initial voicing perturbation on vowels. However, it was later found that the vowels followed by voiceless initial consonants were breathy and it was the voice register of vowels that caused the low fundamental frequency values. In contrast to other studies, the nasal vowels were not always higher in fundamental frequency when compared to oral vowels. In all age groups, nasal vowels following either voiceless or voiced consonants were found to be higher in fundamental frequency than oral vowels, except in the younger age group where the fundamental frequency of nasal vowels following voiced consonants was lower than that of the oral vowels following voiced consonants.

Attitudes have been described for different languages, with varying labels or contexts of occurrence for same labels. It renders cross-cultural comparison uncertain. A corpus was designed to bypass these limitations. This paper focuses on USA English produced by L1 and L2 speakers. The best performances in 9 attitudes are used in a forced-choice test, in both audio and visual modalities. Results show that 6 categories group the presented attitudes in coherent sets. The cultural origin affects marginally the categorisation of the expressions. An acoustic analysis of the fundamental frequency and intensity allows to test the predictions of two theoretical propositions – the Frequency code and the Effort code. It concludes to a main coherence of cross-language expressivity, and discusses differences. For negative expressions of imposition, L1 speakers follow the Frequency code – and L1 listeners expect this; L2 speakers use the Effort code in the same situations, leading to confusions in the audio-only modality. Differences for seduction and irony are also discussed.

This prospective study assessed the advantages and problems associated with converting a patient using an older generation non-indwelling voice prosthesis to a newer generation indwelling voice prosthesis, in this case the Provox®2. The voice characteristics of each patient were measured using the old and then the new voice prosthesis. Technical aspects of the insertion of the indwelling prosthesis were noted. Each patient completed a questionnaire after a period of use with the indwelling prosthesis.Changing the prosthesis was simple and uncomplicated in 15 of 17 patients. Acoustic analysis showed improved parameters with the indwelling prosthesis, but no perceptual difference between the two prostheses. The questionnaire revealed that most patients preferred the indwelling prosthesis.Replacing a non-indwelling with an indwelling prosthesis is technically simple, leading to improvement in voice quality and patient satisfaction. It may be reasonable to offer this choice to patients currently using an older generation non-indwelling voice prosthesis.

Introduction. There are subjective and objective ways to examine the effects of vocal therapy in voice disorders. The most precise and objective check-up is the use of computer voice analysis. Objective. The aim of the research was to perform a detailed analysis of acoustic structure of the vowel A before and after voice treatment in patients with vocal fold nodules in order to obtain objective verification of the vocal rehabilitation success. Methods. We examined 30 female patients, aged 34.6?6.69 years, with vocal fold nodules. Acoustic parameters of voice were compared with the control group consisting of 21 subjects without voice pathology. In all persons the vowel A was recorded and analyzed before and after a month of vocal therapy. The success of the vocal therapy was tracked using computer analysis of vocal structure. Signal, noise and tremor parameters were processed. Results. Of the analyzed vowel A parameters: STD, PER, JITA, JITT, RAP, vFO, ShdB, SHIM, APQ, VTI, SPI, F0, NHR, FTRI, eleven improved (p<0.05 and p<0.01). Three parameters (F0, NHR, FTRI) changed showing improvement, but the obtained differences were not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusion. Based on the obtained results it was concluded that vocal therapy gave satisfactory results, but that it should be continually applied until full stabilization of the voice.

In this study a mother's instinctive accommodations of vocal fundamental frequency (f0) of infant-directed speech to two different infants was explored. Maternal speech directed to individual 3-mo.-old fraternal twin-infants was subjected to acoustic analysis. Natural samples of infant-directed speech were recorded at home. There were differences in the rate of infants' vocal responses. The mother changed her f0 and patterns of intonation contour when she spoke to each infant. When she spoke to the infant whose vocal response was less frequent than the other infant, she used a higher mean f0 and a rising intonation contour more than when she spoke to the other infant. The result suggested that the mother's speech characteristic is not inflexible and that the mother may use a higher f0 and rising contour as a strategy to elicit an infant's less frequent vocal response.
