This chapter is designed to interpret and understand the difference between parents and their children with reference to their usage of internet and its influence in their daily lives. Teenagers between the age of 13 and 16 are the most vulnerable and most prone to cyber bullying and other crimes. Children's effective use of internet relies heavily on the factors surrounding them that not only includes their parents but also their peer and school and neighbourhood. Parents believe that depriving their children of internet access or tools can stop them from accessing the web or restrict their skills and learning about social media. They do not believe that internet use affects family relations negatively. The chapter presents a study undertaken of parents and their children. This presents differences in perception and understanding of internet usage.

Abstract The focus of this essay is on understanding the development and maintenance of patterns of violent behavior for the purpose of identifying points of prevention and intervention. Close attention is paid to using person-centered language that does not conflate exhibiting violent behaviors with being a violent person. There is a meaningful perceptual difference between discussing the behaviors of a violent person versus discussing a person who engaged in violent behaviors: the former is more likely to be associated with immutable characteristics of a person and the latter is more likely to be associated with attempts at understanding social and contextual causes of the behavior.

This paper reports results from a study investigating whether there is a perceptual difference between gesturally different Mandarin retroflexes. Previous studies have suggested that there are two articulatory manners for Mandarin retroflexes: One involves the tongue tip being “curled-up,” and the other the tongue body being “bunched-up.” Thus, by implementing a perception test on Taiwan Mandarin listeners and an acoustic analysis, the research determines whether retroflexes produced with these gestures will be perceived differently. The resultsdings then show that “curled-up” and “bunched-up” retroflexes are not perceptually contrastive at a phonological level. However, the latter are perceived to be phonetically more retroflexed, with such property of stronger retroflexion reflected in their lower M1 (first moment) values. These findings yield one pedagogical implication. The teaching of retroflex articulations can be made reference to the gesture with which Mandarin learners can produce with more ease.

Abstract Creating an external context that will have nourishing effect on the entrepreneurial activities seems to be timely, path and location dependent process. The systemic explorations of the national entrepreneurial context (environment) are still relatively underrepresented. The paper explores strengths and weaknesses of the national entrepreneurship conditions in Croatia and how stable these conditions are in the longer time frame. The aim of the study is to provide more detailed insight on the differences in perceptions among experts engaged in Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) and along the time. Findings indicate deterioration of the national entrepreneurial conditions in Croatia. Experts’ perceptions of national entrepreneurial conditions diverge between experts who have and those who do not have prior entrepreneurial experiences. The time also matters – perceptual difference in evaluating the quality of national entrepreneurship conditions is observed across 2015–2018.

To investigate individual property of internal color representation of congenital red-green color-deficient observers (CDOs) and color-normal observers (CNOs) precisely, difference scaling experiment using pairs of primary colors was carried out for protans, deutans, and normal trichromats, and the results were analyzed using multi-dimensional Scaling (MDS). MDS configuration of CNOs showed circular shape similar to hue circle, whereas that of CNO showed large individual differences from circular to U- shape. Distortion index, DI, is proposed to express the shape variation of MDS configuration. All color chips were plotted in the color vision space, (L, r/g, y/b), and the MDS using a non-linear conversion from the distance in the color vision space to perceptual difference scaling was successful to obtain U-shape configuration that reflects internal color representation of CDOs.

The fishermen communities in South Lampung Regency were once mostly the Javanese who migrated to settle in Lampung in various ways. One of those was through the transmigration program since the colonial era. It was one rewarding way in which many of those have migrated since the era. In addition to doing their activities as the fishermen, they have also carried on their cultural activities as a part of their fishermen life community, that is, Ruwat Laut. After being carried out for years, Ruwat Laut was renamed Syukuran Laut. The name change is interesting for a research. The study was conducted by using a descriptive method with qualitative approach. The studies reveal that the change name was due to lack of funding and perceptual difference between customs of Java and customs of Lampung. Syukuran Laut is carried out without those traditions that once prevented Ruwat Laut, namely buffalo head offering, puppet show, and various types of activities with substantial funds.

AbstractOur conscious visual perception relies on predictive signals, notably in the periphery where sensory uncertainty is high. We investigated how such signals could support perceptual stability of objects’ size across the visual field. When attended carefully, the same object appears slightly smaller in the periphery compared to the fovea. Could this perceptual difference be encoded as a strong prior to predict the peripheral perceived size relative to the fovea? Recent studies emphasized the role of foveal information in defining peripheral size percepts. However, they could not disentangle bottom-up from top-down mechanisms. Here, we revealed a pure top-down contribution to the perceptual size difference between periphery and fovea. First, we discovered a novel Ebbinghaus illusion effect, inducing a typical reduction of foveal perceived size, but a reversed increase effect in the periphery. The size percept was similar at both retinal locations and deviated from the classic perceptual difference. Then through an updating process of successive peripheral-foveal viewing, the unusual peripheral perceived size decreased. The classic perceptual eccentricity difference was restored and the peripheral illusion effect changed into a fovea-like reduction. Therefore, we report the existence of a prior that actively shapes peripheral size perception and stabilizes it relative to the fovea.

Work life and personal life are almost inseparable. The main objective of the study is to find the factors affecting work-life balance and perception of faculty members towards those factors. Descriptive research has been used for the study. Out of the total population, only two hundred and twenty samples were selected employing multi stage sampling. However, only one hundred seventy four questionnaires were duly used for the study. Reliability and validity has been tested with Cronobah’s Alpha of .710 comprising 23 items. Survey questionnaire as a primary source of data were used. The questionnaire was prepared both in English and Nepali script for the easiness of the respondents. Different statistical technique was used like mean, standard deviation, chi-square test, ANOVA test. The SPSS software was used for coding and output of data. The data output was presented in tabular form. The perceptual difference has been identified on the basis of demographic profile. Individual life at work and with family is not the influencing factors, but the other factors were the important factors affecting work life balance. Perceptual difference on the basis of gender, faculty involvement, designation, age and mode of residence has been noted on work-life balance. Lastly, it is recommended to the administration to develop a separate Human Resource Management Cell to maintain work life balance. Future researchers need to conduct research covering faculty members of different colleges. Factor analysis along with Structural Equation Modeling statistical tools need to be used in future studies too.
