The International Criminal Court has experienced a revival in 2018 in terms of activity and new cases and new stages of proceedings brought either before the Pre-Trial, Trial, or Appeals Chamber. These include the two cases in the Central African Republic; a new case before the Appeals Chamber in relation to the United Nations Security Council referral of Jordan for non-cooperation; the Prosecutor has requested an exceptional ruling on an issue concerning jurisdiction of the crime of deportation; a defendant was acquitted by the Appeals Chamber, overturning an earlier conviction by the Trial Chamber. Finally, in the year 2018 unprecedented attacks were made against the Court by government officials of both the United States of America and the Philippines, while the issue of the removal immunities in the Al-Bashir case remains controversial.

Three fan productions are analyzed that delve into the question of what the Philippines and the United States have meant to one another, what the nature of their multifaceted involvement has been for more than a century, what Filipinos feel about the United States of America, and what Americans feel about the Philippines. Fan art and fan fiction are often laden with affect because it is the fact that fan creators are so affected by their favorite media texts that leads them to create fan works in the first place, and that makes their fellow fans, who understand the affects that inspire them, appreciate their works so deeply. Fan productions about the Philippines/United States are similarly suffused with feelings—the feelings that two nations and two peoples have for one another, which are difficult to define, articulate, and express for Filipinos, Americans, and Filipino Americans.

This piece explores the work and entanglements of our research collective, formed in 2016. First, we collectively articulate the ethos and the motivations that inform the ways in which we labor to engage with complex, plural, multi-vocal experiences of extinction, “the Anthropocene,” and earth violence as they are felt and known across the diverse communities we represent. Then, drawing on more than three years of work across relations that tie us to Australia, Canada, Malaysian Borneo, the Philippines, and the United States of America, we share reflections on some of the vital relationships, methods, and “creatures” that animate our collaboration. This collection of “manifestings” aims to show how we work, very consciously, to foster more-than-human capacities for confronting the multi-scalar, cross-cosmological forms of violence that drive extinction and other forms of ecological harm in the world today.
