ABSTRACT Objectives: to report my experiences as a researcher during the course of advanced post-doctoral training abroad. Methods: theoretical and methodological option for Max van Manen’s phenomenology of practice. The activities were developed in the Health Sciences Research Unit: Nursing, in Portugal, Université Catholique de Louvain, in Belgium, and in Escuela de Enfermería y Fisioterapia de la Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, in Spain. Results: participating in a multicenter international research project enabled the acquisition of new scientific knowledge, personal and cultural gains. From a broader perspective, the international graduate and undergraduate nursing networks were strengthened through the mobility of researchers, and overcoming of the “status quo” by the formation of a critical mass environment indispensable for scientific advancement. Final Considerations: sharing the experience that you appropriate is about the power of grasping possibilities of a practical experience, in the context of the world, and going through it, motivated by the desire to make internationalization feasible.

The document published in this article is a letter of introduction written by a Karaite Andalusi Jew upon his arrival to Egypt, on his route to Jerusalem. The text, which was deposited in the Cairo Genizah, is currently held at Cambridge University Library in the Taylor-Schechter Collection (Genizah Research Unit). Although undated, the text has the distinction of being the only known letter written by an Andalusi who presents himself as a Karaite, and is thus a first-person confirmation of the presence of this religious group in al-Andalus.

The book under review presents the challenging and creative research endeavours concerning some peculiar characteristics of multicultural and multilingual communication in South African healthcare settings. The authors of this work – Claire Penn, a professor and director of the Health Communication Research Unit, and Jennifer Watermeyer, an associate professor in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, – focus on bridging the gap between the voices of the lifeworld and the voices of medicine via communication characterized by the complexities and pitfalls within culturally and linguistically diverse health care contexts. The research under review is aimed at analyzing the cognitive space of professional medical communication in healthcare settings for applying the results in practice. Research of the cross-language interactions in healthcare facilities (using the evidence from South African medical settings) certainly contributes a lot to establishing an adequate cultural brokers’ role in the professional communication and to describing methods aimed at modifying interactions between a healthcare professional and a patient, which taken together lead to the improvement of medical communication in general. This book is a reasonably valuable source of essential knowledge for both healthcare professionals, linguists, discourse analysis researchers, medical educators and practitioners, and for those people who are interested in the specificities of communication research projects in terms of professional medical discourse on the global scale.

<p>The discussions around Arctic Amplification have led to extensive research, as done in the transregional collaboration (AC)³. One focus are the feedback mechanisms that are strengthening or weakening the warming. Several of these feedbacks involve moisture in the atmosphere in all phases. To understand these better we have been running and analysing daily cloud-resolving simulations. We performed these simulations for a region more strongly affected by the warming around Ny-Ålesund (Svalbard), which is challenging due to its diverse surface properties and mountainous surrounding. We have created an outstandingly large data set of several months of these simulations with 600 m resolution, using the Icosahedral non-hydrostatic model in the large-eddy mode (ICON-LEM).</p> <p>To gain some understanding of how well the model can represent such a complex location, we evaluated the performance of the model. For this, we used a range of observations from the measurement super-site located at Ny-Ålesund. This included radiosondes [1], a rain gauge, a microwave radiometer and further processed remote sensing data. Combining the measurements and simulations enables us to provide thorough statistics for different variables connected to clouds and to establish an understanding of how well they are represented.</p> <p>We show that the model is capable of simulating the two distinct flow regimes in the boundary layer and the free troposphere. Further, we found a tendency in the model to misrepresent liquid and mixed-phase clouds as purely ice clouds. Though the water vapour is well captured, we found further steps in the chain towards precipitation formation are insufficiently represented. Through the use of forward simulations and expanded model output, we can continue to get a better picture of possibilities to understand and improve the microphysical processes.</p> <p><em>This work was supported by the</em><em> DFG funded Transregio-project TR 172 “Arctic Amplification </em>(AC)3<em>“.</em></p> <p><strong>References</strong></p> <p>[1] M. In June 2021, the DFG Research Unit 228 ‘Journal Literature’1 organized the 9t International Conference of the European Society for Periodical Research (ESPRit) on the topic of ‘Periodical Formats in the Market: Economies of Space and Time, Competition and Transfer’. On behalf of the Research Unit, a team from the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) was responsible for planning and carrying out the event, in coordination with the ESPRit Committee. As the COVID-19 pandemic spread in Europe during the Spring of 2020, the conference team agreed to go virtual with the conference, due to the foreseeable legal and logistical difficulties in planning and carrying it out in person. From the outset, planning the virtual conference was flanked by an intensive process of reflection in which the conference team reviewed and adapted its objectives as well as the methods and processes required to achieve these goals. This process of reflection was significantly more intensive than is the case with on-site conferences, which are based on existing experience and logistical support from the host institutions. The experiences and insights gained are shared in this report in order to assist in planning future conferences.

The Diurnal Temperature Range (DTR) profoundly affects human health, agriculture, eco-system, and socioeconomic systems. In this study, we analyzed past and future changes in DTR using gridded Climate Research Unit (CRU) datasets for the years 1950–2020 and an ensemble means of thirteen bias-corrected Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models under different Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5) scenarios for the rest of the 21st century over the southern slope of Central Himalaya, Nepal. Furthermore, the potential drivers (precipitation and cloud cover) of seasonal and annual DTR were studied using correlation analysis. This study found that the DTR trends generally declined; the highest decrease was observed in the pre-monsoon and winter at a rate of 0.09 °C/decade (p ≤ 0.01). As expected, DTR demonstrated a significant negative correlation with cloudiness and precipitation in all four seasons. Further, the decreased DTR was weakly related to the Sea Surface Temperature variation (SST) in the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans. We found that the projected DTR changes in the future varied from a marginal increase under the SSP1-2.6 (only pre-monsoon) scenario to continued significant decreases under SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5. Insights based on retrospective and prospective evaluation help to understand the long-term evolution of diurnal temperature variations.

AbstractThe advent of hand surgery in India reads like a fortuitous saga, a continuum of the hand deformity correction on leprosy patients pioneered by Dr. Paul Wilson Brand at the Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore, Madras State (Tamil Nadu [TN]), in 1948. The “Hand Research Unit,” established in 1951, became the largest repository for hand reconstructive surgeries and with its head-start drew in most hand dysfunctions in the country. Early industrialization and disorderly road traffic generated hand injuries that threatened workforce in India. Propitiously, a hand injury service was opened in 1971 at the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital, Chennai. The inexorable growth of hand surgery continued and incorporated the gamut of conditions that required hand care and rehabilitation, including brachial plexus injuries. Continuing Medical Education programs, Hand Surgery workshops, Indian Society for Surgery of the Hand meetings, Hand Fellowships, etc., increased the number of “hand surgery” practitioners, which drew the attention of the Medical Council of India to commence a postgraduate Hand Surgery program that it eventually gazetted. The sagacity of the members of the Board of Studies of TN Medical University honored the historical role of CMC Vellore in hand surgery and allowed it to commence the first Master of Chirurgiae Hand Surgery course in India in 2015. An intuitive understanding of 70 years of hand surgery accomplishments that redesigned and restored deformed and injured hands and protected livelihoods have made young surgeons increasingly take hand surgery as a career.

The effect of topography on June to August (JJA) rainfall over east Africa is investigated using the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) Regional Climate Model (RegCM4.0). Grell convection scheme with Fritsch-Chappell closure assumption is used. The control simulation is done with actual topography and sensitivity experiments are carried out with topography reduced to 75%, 25% and to zero. The model output was evaluated against Climate Research Unit (CRU) dataset, gridded at 0.5 degree resolution and ERA-interim datasets, gridded at 0.75 degree resolution. Results show that the mean JJA rainfall significantly reduces over the region when topography elevation is reduced. Based on the model, when the topography over the selected region (KTU) is reduced to 25%, the mean JJA rainfall over east Africa is reduced by roughly half. The maximum rainfall reduction is however observed around the region over which topography is reduced. The reduction in topography resulted into an anomalous moisture divergence over the region at low level (850 hPa). Divergence at low level results in vertical shrinking which suppresses convection due to subsidence. The strength of moisture transport and the zonal wind speed at 850hpa increased with decrease in topography, which may be responsible for the observed shift in moisture convergence zone from western Kenya to northern Uganda. The findings from this study would provide insight into the effect of topography on the east African climate and call for more detailed investigative research, particularly in the region. The results may motivate researchers and modeling centers to further improve on the performance of the model over the region.
