Achieving successful employment outcomes for people with psychiatric disabilities continues to be one of the greatest challenges for rehabilitation counselors. This is particularly true now that people with psychiatric disabilities constitute the largest client population for vocational rehabilitation agencies. Given the magnitude and complexity of the challenge, rehabilitation counselors need to utilize every strategy available to assist people with psychiatric disabilities in becoming successfully employed Psychiatric rehabilitation intervention methods will be discussed, emphasizing the use of job trainers in working with individuals with psychiatric disabilities.

This paper offers an overview of the psychiatric vocational rehabilitation system using brief descriptions of Canadian program models to describe employment preparation services and vocational programs. The psychiatric rehabilitation literature clearly demonstrates that persons with psychiatric disabilities are potentially employable if they are provided with appropriate services, employment programs, and support. Although vocational programs are proliferating in all provinces across Canada, there are strong indications that more programming and funding is urgently needed.

The purpose of this study was to descriptively explore the service provision of transition-aged youth in a state vocational rehabilitation (VR) agency and to determine if predictor variables could be identified for successful employment outcomes through logistic regression. At closure, more than half the participants were closed successfully in competitive employment. The majority were working in service, clerical and sales, or professional/technical/ managerial positions after receiving VR services focused on understanding the consumer's needs and creating appropriate plans, preparing for a job, obtaining a job and then retaining employment. Implications for transition and rehabilitation practice include the necessity o[specific transition-related training for VR counselors.

A series of developmental experiential learning activities designed to give students increasingly more experience working with individuals with psychiatric disabilities is described. The benefits of including these types of activities within a psychiatric rehabilitation specialization in a rehabilitation counseling master's degree program are discussed. Activities that increase students' sensitivity to, experience with, and efficacy working with individuals with long-term mental illnesses can easily be included in other rehabilitation counseling education programs.

The unemployment rate of those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is staggeringly low. The low number of those with ASD in the competitive workforce can be connected to the complex and sometimes severe manifestations of the disorder. However, there are many supports and accommodations that individuals with ASD can use in order to alleviate the stress of finding and maintaining competitive employment. Natural supports can be provided through supportive supervisors, informed coworkers, and on-the-job trainings. Vocational rehabilitation services are provided in order to assess, prepare, and support individuals with ASD through their employment. Lastly, job modifications are used to alleviate any stressors that an employee with ASD may experience on the job. In this literature it was found that natural supports, vocational rehabilitation services, and job modifications were effective in improving the employment outcomes for individuals with ASD. Rehabilitation counselors can use the information found in this literature review to inform employers of successful and effective job supports for employees with ASD.

BACKGROUND: Students with disabilities often experience numerous challenges in terms of finding employment. Given the important role of vocational rehabilitation counselors in supporting employment activities for these students, a need exists for identifying effective strategies that increase employment outcomes for this population. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this scoping review is to examine and describe successful research- based interventions on pre-employment transition services for students with disabilities that can be used by vocational rehabilitation counselors. METHODS: The search strategy examined literature from 1998 through 2017 focused on vocational rehabilitation counselors, students with disabilities, and elements related to pre-employment transition services. Articles included American, European, and Australian literature published in English. RESULTS: This review identified a number of research-based interventions that support employment outcomes for students with disabilities. CONCLUSIONS: The research-based interventions identified in this scoping review can help vocational rehabilitation counselors consider effective strategies for increasing employment outcomes for students with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Transition-age youth (TAY) with depressive disorders struggle with finding and retaining gainful employment. Thousands of these youth enroll in the state-federal vocational rehabilitation (VR) program each year to improve their employment outcomes. However, there is a dearth of information on the factors that facilitate or impede their success in the program. OBJECTIVE: The study aims to shed light on the demographic characteristics and vocational rehabilitation services and their association with successful employment and earnings of TAY with depressive disorders in the state-federal VR program. METHOD: The sample comprised of 4,772 participants drawn from the Rehabilitation Services Administration dataset. Regression analyses were employed to examine the effects of demographic characteristics and vocational rehabilitation services on successful employment and earnings. RESULTS: Results indicated that employment outcomes varied by demographic characteristics such as race/ethnicity, severity of disability and level of education. Also, certain VR services had significant positive or negative relationships with successful employment and earnings. CONCLUSIONS: Highlighting the promise of the state-federal programs for supporting TAY with depressive disorders to successfully participate in the labor market, findings from this study expand upon the literature by suggesting practices and services for optimizing employment potentials of this population.
