The Riverhouse Children’s Center is an actual day care business. The case is an example of a small niche-business common to locales across the United States. Riverhouse is atypical of private day care centers in that it is organized as a not-for-profit institution. The case reviews the benefits and pitfalls of obtaining not-for-profit tax status for a business. The case also presents the different pricing mechanisms embedded in the fee structure of the center. Case discussion questions lead students to suggest a restructuring of the revenue side of the business. Additionally, the case reveals that there may be non-monetary motivations for entrepreneurs and highlights the challenge of working within a tight budget.

The evolution of accounting as prescribed by the General Canons is identified and its implementation throughout the church conferences is examined.

The authors analyzed data from a national survey of 2003 directors of licensed child day-care centers to determine employee smoking policies, measure compliance with state and local employee smoking regulations for child day-care centers and state clean indoor air laws, and to estimate the extent of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke in these settings. Forty states regulated employee smoking in child day-care centers, but only three states required day-care centers to be smoke-free indoors. More than 99% of licensed child day-care centers had employee smoking policies that complied with the appropriate state or local smoking regulations. Nearly 55% of centers were smoke-free indoors and outdoors, and 26% were smoke-free indoors only. The best predictors of more stringent employee smoking policies were location in the West or South, smaller size, independent ownership, or having written smoking policies. Despite the presence of strong smoking policies at the majority of licensed child day-care centers, more than 752000 children in the United States are at risk for environmental tobacco smoke exposure in these settings. Health care professionals and parents should insist that child day-care centers be smoke-free indoors and, preferably, smoke-free indoors and outdoors.

Purpose This paper describes the implementation of wireless “intelligent” pump intravenous (IV) infusion technology in a not-for-profit academic, multicampus hospital system in the United States. Methods The process of implementing a novel infusion system in a multicampus health care institution (main campus plus three satellite campuses) is described. Details are provided regarding the timelines involved, the process for the development of the drug libraries, and the initial implementation within and across campuses. Results In early 2004, with the end of the device purchase contract period nearing, a multidisciplinary committee evaluated potential IV infusion pumps for hospital use. In April 2004, the committee selected the Plum A+ infusion system with Hospira MedNet software and wireless capabilities (Hospira Inc., Lake Forest, IL). Implementation of the single-channel IV infusion system took place July through October 2005 following installation of the wireless infrastructure throughout the multicampus facility. Implementation occurred in July, one campus at a time; the three smaller satellite campuses went “live” before the main campus. Implementation of the triple-channel IV infusion system took place in March 2006 when the wireless infrastructure was completed and fully functional throughout the campuses, software was upgraded, and drug library revisions were completed and uploaded. Conclusion “Intelligent” pump technology provided a framework to standardize drug concentrations used in the intensive care units. Implementation occurred transparently without any compromise of patient care. Many lessons were learned during implementation that explained the initial suboptimal compliance with safety software use. In response, the committee developed strategies to increase software utilization rates, which resulted in improved acceptance by nursing staff and steadily improving compliance rates. Wireless technology has supported remote device management, prospective monitoring, the avoidance of medication error, and the timely education of health care professionals regarding potential medication errors.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the influences of performance measurement (PM) on not-for-profit (NFP) organizations’ stakeholders by studying how PM practices interact with understandings of legitimate performance goals. This study invokes institutional logics theory to explain interactions between PM and stakeholders. Design/methodology/approach An in-depth case study is conducted in a large NFP organization in the UK. Managers, employees, and external partners are interviewed and observed, and performance-related documents analyzed. Findings Both stakeholders and PM practices are found to have dominant institutional logics that portray certain goals as legitimate. PM practices can reinforce, reconcile, or inhibit stakeholders’ understandings and propensity to act toward goals, depending on the extent to which practices share the dominant logic of the stakeholders they interact with. Research limitations/implications A theoretical framework is proposed for how PM practices first interact with stakeholders at a cognitive level and second influence action. This research is based on a single case study, which limits generalizability of findings; however, results may be transferable to other environments where PM is aimed at balancing competing stakeholder objectives and organizational priorities. Practical implications PM affects the experience of stakeholders by interacting with their understanding of legitimate performance goals. PM systems should be designed and implemented on the basis of both their formal ability to represent organizational aims and objectives, and their influence on stakeholders. Originality/value Findings advance PM theory by offering an explanation for how PM influences attention and actions at an individual micro level.
