En este ensayo se aborda la relación existente entre belleza, homosexualidad y pensamiento esteticista en la obra de Yukio Mishima. La ilustración se da a partir del análisis de tres obras del escritor japonés: Confesiones de una máscara, El color prohibido y El pabellón de oro, lo cual permite contrastar las visiones del mundo europeo y el japonés con respecto al tema de la sexualidad. Se plantean, además, las similitudes existentes en la obra El retrato de Dorian Gray de Oscar Wilde y la novela El color prohibido. Finalmente, se hace una lectura del lugar que ocupa la belleza, desde el punto de vista de los valores estéticos, en la novela El pabellón de oro.

O presente ensaio busca apresentar, numa perspectiva comparatista e atualizadora, duas diferentes leituras de temas cruciais ao século XIX, como o dandismo e o decadentismo. Nesse sentido, aproxima, respectivamente, O retrato de Dorian Gray (1890), de Oscar Wilde, e Submissão (2015), de Michel Houellebecq, do romance emblemático À rebours (1884) de Joris-Karl Huysmans. Tanto a obra de Wilde, quanto a de Houellebecq, de maneiras distintas, interpretam tais questões em chaves inusitadas. O primeiro desloca seu refinamento, pelo apetite da crueldade melodramática ao explorar a margem monstruosa de sua época. O segundo desvia-se da melancolia desencantada do seu clima crepuscular, numa deriva satírica e cínica, por reconhecer a convergência entre o decadentismo novecentista e a nossa atualidade distópica e aviltada pelo avanço da desterritorialização do humano.

This chapter examines the decadent olfactif as represented by Oscar Wilde and the poet and critic Arthur Symons, who understood how perfume helped shape their identities as dandies and sophisticated men about town, with both of them alluding to new synthetic scents. Wilde’s use of perfume as a sign of decadent sexual identity, explored in Dorian Gray, is rudely interrupted by his imprisonment in 1895, but the idea of perfume abides with him during his incarceration as an important ideal and consolation. In Symons’s poetry and prose strong or recognizable perfumes of the period are evoked for scrutiny or contemplation or permeate the memory, calling attention to themselves as markers of decadent modernity. For Symons, perfume identified with memory does not fade, an idea borne out by his critical appreciation of the perfume of particular literary texts, lyric poetry especially, and celebrated in his own verse.

As a result of his classical training in the Honours School of Literæ Humaniores at Oxford, Oscar Wilde drew frequently on the works of Plato for inspiration, especially the Republic. The idea of a New Republic and its philosophy resonated profoundly with Wilde—so much so that the philosophical questions raised in Plato’s Republic become the central problems of The Picture of Dorian Gray. This chapter maps the parallels between the Republic and Dorian Gray, with specific focus on several of Plato’s most striking images from the Republic. In particular, the depiction of Lord Henry suggests not only the philosophical soul gone corrupt, but also the ‘drone’ who seduces the oligarchic young man into a life of ‘unprincipled freedom’, according to Plato’s definition of democracy. By invoking the Socratic lens, Wilde critiques Lord Henry’s anti-philosophy of the ‘New Hedonism’ and contrasts it with the Socratic eros.

Objetiva-se evidenciar as notações homoculturais em O Retrato de Dorian Gray (1890), de Oscar Wilde. Assim, ao intentar destacar a homoafetividade presente no romance, são ancorados conceitos a respeito do “espaço biográfico” (ARFUCH, 2010), bem como as nuances históricas da vida do autor, delineadas por Pires (2005) e Schiffer (2011), além dos pressupostos sobre homocultura e homoafetividade, fundamentados em Foucault (2010) e Lugarinho (2004). Em perspectiva bibliográfica, nota-se que os aspectos homoculturais no romance se estabelecem no strechos em que estão presentes nuances significativas de afetividade homossexual. Nesse sentido, esta abordagem pretende-se não somente enquanto uma discussão teórico-analítica, mas também como um constructo socialmente engajado, enviesando abordagens literárias dissidentes de perspectivas heteronormativas.Palavras-chave:Dorian Gray. O presente trabalho busca, juntamente com uma análise histórica do contexto britânico do final século XIX, discutir as múltiplas correntes de pensamento vigentes na era vitoriana, como o decadentismo e o hedonismo, presentes na obra de Oscar Wilde O retrato de Dorian Gray, publicada pela primeira vez em 1891, cristalizando os momentos em que os pensamentos do período se alinham, muitas vezes de forma sutil, às narrativas dos personagens. Este artigo objetiva estabelecer relações entre um período marcado pelo avanço científico e industrial, pela polaridade social inglesa – pessoas muito pobres ou muito ricas –, as múltiplas concepções acerca do que seria a arte, a formulação de uma individualidade burguesa, as representações desse contexto histórico e as teorias nele presentes abordadas na narrativa de Wilde.

The law of growing standardisation (Toury 1995) appears to be particularly at play in diatopy, and more specifically in the case of transnational languages. Some studies have revealed the tendency to standardise the diatopic varieties of Spanish in translated language (Corpas Pastor 2015a, 2015b, 2017, 2018). However, to our knowledge, no work has studied this tendency in the Spanish translations of a literary work. This paper focuses on verb + noun (object) collocations of Spanish translations of The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Two different varieties have been chosen (Peninsular and Colombian Spanish). The techniques used to translate this type of collocations in both Spanish translations will be analysed. Further, the diatopic distribution of these collocations will be studied by means of large corpora. Based on the results, it is argued that the Colombian Spanish translation is actually closer to general or standard Spanish than to the variety of this country.

AbstractThe main issue of the Pygmalion myth is the vitalisation of an artificial woman. In Ovid’s Metamorphoses it is motivated by the intervention of Venus. This article deals with Pygmalion-like protagonists since 1800, in which the crucial point of vitalisation is no longer based on divine volition but on semiotic theories that Winckelmann, Lessing, Goethe and others used in the eighteenth century. In these cases, the protagonist’s perspective gives rise to the impression of vivification. The examples of Joseph von Eichendorff, Oscar Wilde and Georg Heym show that this shift also had an impact on the narrative techniques, for their concreteness allows the reader to retrace the vivification of the figures himself. In the twentieth century Georg Heym modernised the techniques of the eighteenth century by connecting them with associations of the new medium film. In the course of time the pygmalionic observer turns into a pygmalionic narrator, whose narration obtains with the aid of the reader an enormous vitality.
