The removal of heavy metal ions Cr (VI) and Zn (II) from aqueous solution using theskin of orange peel (Citrus sinensis) as an adsorbent under different experimentalconditions was investigated in this study. The concentrations of the metal ions adsorbedwere determined by atomic absorption spectroscopic (AAS) method. The parametersinvestigated were temperature, contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial metal ionsconcentration and pH. It was observed that the white inner skin of orange removed more ofCr (VI) than Zn (II) metal ions in all the adsorption experiments. The optimum removal ofthe Cr (VI) and Zn (II) metal ions occurred at pH 3 and at temperature 30°C. Application ofthe Langmuir isotherm to the systems yielded maximum adsorption capacity of 8.068 (mg/g)and 1.078 (mg/g) for Cr (VI) and Zn (II) metal ions respectively. Keywords: Orange peel; Adsorption; Heavy metals; LangmuirDOI: 10.3126/jncs.v26i0.3628Journal of Nepal Chemical SocietyVol. 26, 2010Page:31-39

Pectin is complex polysaccharide contained D-galacturonic acid bonded by α -1,4 glucosidic in plant cell walls. Pectin widely used in pharmaceutical, food and beverage industries. This study evaluates the effect of solvent and stirring speed on pectin characteristic. The study utilizes ultrasonic wave and acid solvent at the presence of ethanol to yield pectin following by drying to obtain dried pectin. This study carries out using 25 grams orange peels, 10 %, chloride acid solvent, 60 minutes extraction time, temperature of 60 oC, ultrasonic wave speed 50 KHz and 16 hours settling time at various solvent concentrations 0.025 N; 0.05 N; 0.075 N and stirring speed 0 rpm; 50 rpm; 100 rpm; 150 rpm. The results showed that the highest yield of pectin extraction was obtained at concentration of 0.075 N with 20.12 %; stirring speed 150 rpm, water content 8.0 %; 4,0 % ash content, and 7.44 % methoxyl content.

Used cooking oil (UCO) is abundant waste oil in Malaysia, due to its daily use in frying food. The proper way to dispose UCO is yet to be found and creating awareness among Malaysians on disposing and recycling UCO required a long period of time. Therefore, alternative needs to be taken to solve this issue by transforming UCO into a value-added product such as insect repellent. Thus, the objective of this research is to investigate the presence of active functional chemical compounds in UCO and orange (Citrus sinensis) peels powder (limonene) that would help to transform UCO into a repellent. Based on GC-MS analysis, there was presence of fatty acids in UCO such as palmitic acid (C16:0), stearic acid (C18:0), oleic acid (C18:1), myristic acid (C14:0) and capric acid (C10:0). FTIR analysis has proven that orange (Citrus sinensis) peels powder contained limonene compound due to presence of alkene (C=C) group. The results of UCO and orange peels analysis, as well as comparison made with previous studies show that UCO and orange peels powder are potential to be the medium of insect repellent.
