Panel data of individual firms are a valuable source of information on the disaster resilience of the regional economy. Such data also helps to assess the effectiveness of government aids to recovery. Every year after the Great East Japan Earthquake 2011, from 2012 to 2015, Tohoku University’s Graduate School of Economics and Management conducted the Tohoku University Earthquake Recovery Firm Survey (TERFS) to obtain such information. The survey collected 25,826 responses over the 4-year period from a total of 11,090 firms in the east Tohoku region, the most severely affected region. Based on this survey, this paper assesses the effects of the conventional and new government recovery aid measures introduced to help firms affected by the disaster on the levels of business activity. The paper finds that group subsidy and debt reduction had important roles in the recovery of business activities, and demonstrates the importance of a panel survey in understanding and guiding policies for the resilience of the regional economy.

Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) has emerged as an important additional source of information for improving the resilience of cities and communities in the face of natural hazards and extreme weather events. This chapter summarizes the existing research in this area and offers an interdisciplinary perspective of the challenges to be overcome, by presenting AGORA: A Geospatial Open collaboRative Architecture for building resilience against disasters and extreme events. AGORA structures the challenges of using VGI for disaster management into three layers: acquisition, integration and application. The chapter describes the research challenges involved in each of these layers, as well as reporting on the results achieved so far and the lessons learned in the context of flood risk management in Brazil. Furthermore, the chapter concludes by setting out an interdisciplinary research agenda for leveraging VGI to improve disaster resilience.

Abstract Most prior research on labor market mismatch was constrained by the unavailability of data on skill mismatch and also the absence of panel data which would provide controls for unmeasured heterogeneity. This paper makes use of the panel element of Korea Labor & Income Panel Survey (KLIPS) data and identifies the wage effects of educational mismatch and skill mismatch both separately and jointly. It clearly shows that only a small proportion of the wage effect of educational mismatch is accounted for by skill mismatch, suggesting a relatively weak relation between educational mismatch and skill mismatch. In the analysis appropriate panel methodology produces much weaker estimates of the relevant coefficients than the pooled OLS model. This result indicates that unobserved individual-specific characteristics play a substantial role in the way in which mismatch effects are determined.

A dynamic analysis of travelers’ attitudes, preferences, and values was carried out using three waves of the Puget Sound Transportation Panel survey to investigate dynamics in traveler attitudes and perceptions. An in-depth descriptive analysis was performed to examine the variations in attitudinal ratings over time. A traditional one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) method was used to explore for similarities and differences in traveler attitudinal ratings across different waves of the panel survey. A similar analysis was performed on the stayer sample (i.e., the respondents who participated in all three waves of the panel used in this study). The ANOVA results show significant differences in mean attitudinal ratings across the three waves of the panel survey. The differences in traveler attitudes and perceptions among stayers, dropouts (respondents who leave the panel survey), and refreshments (respondents who are newly recruited as the panel survey proceeds) were also captured. Finally, differences in traveler attitudes and preferences across different modal market segments were examined. The results indicate the need for greater consideration of attitudinal dynamics in transportation planning and policy analysis.
