AbstractThis is a personal record. I describe my work at the World Bank for over 20 years, telling you how we began a new and continuously evolving professional practice four decades ago, and to what effect. I hope to transmit to students of a next generation the causes that development anthropology stands for, and to pass on my passionate conviction that it must remain a mainstream discipline in the twenty-first century.

This chapter examines how next-generation visual social platforms motivate students to capture authentic evidence of their learning and achievements, publish digital artifacts, and share content across visual social media. Educators are facing the immediate task of integrating social media into their current practice to meet the needs of the twenty-first century learner. Using a case study, this chapter highlights through empirical work how nascent visual social media platforms such as Pinterest are being utilized in the college classroom and concludes with projections on ways visual networking platforms will transform traditional models of education.

The focus of this survey is on oratory as a spoken phenomenon, intimately related to politics and government at Rome. Its chronological scope is roughly from the beginning of the second century B.C. until the end of the first century A.D.; it has no pretensions to offer a guide to oratory in the later Empire. Its geographical focus is firmly on Rome, reflecting the overwhelming bias in our source material. I start with the occasions for oratory in Rome and turn then to the issues which arise from the process of turning a speech, delivered in front of an audience on a particular occasion, into a written text which can be accessed and enjoyed in private and at any time. I then consider some of the means by which orators of the imperial period explored different means of preserving their oratorical activities for posterity. In the final two chapters I concentrate on orators themselves: how they carried out their task, and reflected upon it, as adult practitioners, and then how boys became the next generation of orators.

The idea of using Main Memory Database (MMDB) as physical memory is not new but is in existence quite since a decade. MMDB have evolved from a period when they were only used for caching or in high-speed data systems to a time now in twenty first century when they form a established part of the mainstream IT. Early in this century, although larger main memories were affordable but processors were not fast enough for main memory databases to be admired. However, today’s processors are faster, available in multicore and multiprocessor configurations having 64-bit memory addressability stocked with multiple gigabytes of main memory. Thus, MMDBs definitely call for a solution for meeting the requirements of next generation IT challenges. To aid this swing, database systems are reconsidered to handle implementation issues adjoining the inherent differences between disk and memory storage and gain performance benefits. This paper is a review on Main Memory Databases (MMDB).

Founded by Corinthians in Sicily in the 8th century, Syracuse soon became one of the biggest and more powerful poleis of the Greek world. During the first century of life in Sicily, the Syracusans founded in the hinterland four other settlements: Heloros, Akrai, Kasmene and Kamarina. This article intends to demonstrate, through the description of material data, that: 1. These foundations were enabled thanks to negotiation with local people and that Syracusan expansion was not exclusively a military/violent one; 2. Through these foundations, Syracuse established boundaries for its initial territorial expansion; 3. The empty space between Syracuse and these boundaries were filled up by degrees and in different conditions; 4. That this movement made by Syracuse allows us to better understand an inherent characteristic of the Greek ‘way of being’, i.e., territorial control
