Abstract. The veracity of urban climate simulation models should be systematically evaluated to demonstrate the trustworthiness of these models against possible model uncertainties. However, existing studies paid insufficient attention to model evaluation; most studies only provided some simple comparison lines between modelled variables and their corresponding observed ones on the temporal dimension. Challenges remain since such simple comparisons cannot concretely prove that the simulation of urban climate behaviours is reliable. Studies without systematic model evaluations, being ambiguous or arbitrary to some extent, may lead to some seemingly new but scientifically misleading findings. To tackle these challenges, this article proposes a methodological framework for the model evaluation of high-resolution urban climate simulations and demonstrates its effectiveness with a case study in the area of Shenzhen and Hong Kong SAR, China. It is intended to (again) remind urban climate modellers of the necessity of conducting systematic model evaluations with urban-scale climatology modelling and reduce these ambiguous or arbitrary modelling practices.

Road is an infrastructure that built to support the movement of the vehicle from one place to another for different purposes. Today, it is often found damage to road infrastructure, both local roads, and arterial roads. Therefore, to keep the pavement condition to remain reliable, in Indonesia has a periodic program by conducting an objective functional inspection of roads regulated by Bina Marga using the International Roughness Index (IRI). However, the IRI examination is not sufficient to represent the actual field condition; it is necessary to perform subjective functional examination by appraising the road one of them is Pavement Condition Index (PCI, ASTM D 6433). This method has been widely applied in some countries because it has many advantages. However, to do this inspection requires considerable cost, then there needs to be a model to get the relationship between these two parameters of the road. The selected case study was arterial road segment in Medan City, that is in Medan inner ring road. Based on the results of the analysis, there is a difference between the functional conditions of PCI and IRI. The equation derived from these two parameters is by exponential regression equation, with equation IRI = 16.07exp-0.26PCI. with R2 of 59% with correlation coefficient value (r) of -0.768. The value of R2 indicates that PCI gives a strong influence on IRI value.

Electrical energy usage has been rapidly increased in the building sector due to shifting in population from rural to urban area. In the building, Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Especially air-condition system has taken the most substantial proportion of overall building energy consumption. This result from a large amount of energy must be used in order to provide a comfort zone for occupants in the building. So, this paper aims to proposed design and built prototypes of air-condition control unit that can automatically operate according to schedule. The prototypes using a wireless module to send the control signal to the air-conditioning unit. Specific software has been built to set the desired operating schedule and duration of an operation. The performance of the proposed unit will be evaluated using an experiment on actual field test by installing on actual air-condition in the case study building. The result has shown that the proposed unit can reduce energy usage in air-conditioning significantly compare with little cost for the controller unit.

A vacant unit, once used by a Portuguese Deli, was converted to a bar/music room in Toronto. The unit was divided into two spaces along its north-south axis. The western portion was designed as a music room that would provide a performance space from a solo artist to a Jazz combo to a small rock band. The eastern part was designed as a regular bar/dining area. The plan also called for a microbrewery unit at the back of the unit. The bar music can be loud, while the music room can be pianissimo to forte depending on the type of performance. The acoustical design aspects are critical for the music room. In addition, the acoustical separation between the two spaces is equally important. The music room/bar is currently in use. The design results are compared to actual field measurements. The results showed that the music venue performed satisfactorily. The acoustical separation between the music venue and the bar/restaurant was better than expected other than an installation deficiency of the south side sound lock doors. The background sound along the northern portion was NC-35 or less. However, the southern portion’s background sound exceeded NC-35 due to the hissing of the return air grille. The acoustical design and the performance results of the music venue-bar/restaurant are presented in this paper.

The Construction and Demolition (C&D) industry is very close to various waste management issues as the generation of waste is inevitable in every construction. In Indonesia, to make an applicable implementation of C&D Waste Management, the improvement must be made by looking into the actual field process. The improvement uses DMAIC as the lean tools and VSM to state the current process of material from its delivery on the site into a waste. Waste that is being monitored is the most used materials in the case study project which are concrete. A notable project was taken for the study as it will help other structure projects to imitate the down-to-earth future state, aiming at the reduction of waste generation rate and also business process improvement. The result shows that the process of concrete from orders to waste took eight steps, and three of them are improved, producing 3% lesser waste from the current state. The best scenario WGR were analyzed to also answer the stakeholder interest within the case study.

This paper is to study the mechanism of aging on the rheological properties of the asphalt and make correlations with the actual field behavior of the binder. The effects of ageing on rheological properties of asphalt has been studied by Dynamic Shear Rheometer(DSR). Significant differences of rheological properties and composition were observed between fresh and aged asphalt. The results show that aging at low temperature increases the complex modulus of asphalt, but has little effect at high temperature.
