Abstract Background: PM2.5 pollution has become a major public health concern in urban China. Understanding the residents’ individual perceptions toward haze pollution is critical for policymaking and risk communication. However, the perceptions of middle-aged and elderly residents, who particularly vulnerable to haze pollution, are poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to explore their risk perception of haze pollution, and investigating its relationship with health status and pulmonary function parameters. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 400 randomly sampled individuals (aged 40 to 90 years) was conducted in Wuxi, a typical PM2.5-polluted city in Jiangsu Province, China (daily average PM2.5 concentration was 52.73 μg/m3 between 2015-2017). Each participant’s demographic and health information, individual perception and pulmonary function outcomes were collected, and linear models were employed to explore the relationship between personal characteristics and pulmonary function parameters and perception factors. Results: We found that the mean values for controllability (4.99 ± 2.78) and dread of risk to oneself (levels of fear for the haze-related harm to oneself) (6.90 ± 2.45) were the lowest and the highest values, respectively, in our study. Education and average family income were positively related with all individual perception factors, while age was negatively associated. A history of respiratory disease was positively associated with all individual perception factors except controllability. Significant positive associations were observed between PEF (coefficients ranged from 0.18 to 0.22) and FEF75% (coefficients ranged from 0.18 to 0.29) with a variety of individual perception factors. Conclusions: There was a lack of concern and knowledge, weak self-protection consciousness and a strong dread of PM2.5 pollution among the middle-aged and elderly residents in Wuxi. Their individual perceptions were associated with age, education levels, average family income, history of respiratory disease and pulmonary function indexes PEF and FEF75%. Our findings may help policymakers develop effective policies and communication strategies to mitigate the hazards of haze among older residents.

ObjectiveThis study aims to evaluate the completion of concussion education in a sample of Wisconsin high school student athletes and their parents/ guardians and identify factors associated with completion.BackgroundSport-related concussion is a significant public health concern. All 50 states have legislation mandating safety and prevention efforts aimed at reducing the burden of injury amongst the high school athlete population. Efforts include mandated concussion education for both athletes and their parents/ guardians. Previous studies have found that education leads to improved recognition of symptoms and improved outcomes. However, completion has not been formally assessed and factors that are associated with the completion are unknown.Design/MethodsSecondary analysis of cross-sectional survey data collected during fall of 2017. Data for pre-identified demographic factors (eg. race, ethnicity, student grade level, highest education, income level) were extracted and summarized using descriptive statistics. Only participants who provided responses to variables of interest were included in this analysis (n = 224 dyads of student athlete and their parent/ guardian). Chi Square test of significance assessed associations between factors and completion of concussion education. Analyses performed using SAS version 9.4.ResultsThe majority of student athletes self-identified as male (n = 123; 55.2%), white (n = 185; 87.7%) and non-hispanic (n = 192; 93.2%). Student athletes, who were older, in higher grade levels, had a history of concussion, and had parents/legal guardians with higher levels of education reported completing concussion education at higher proportions. Parents/ guardians reported completion of concussion education at higher proportions if they had a higher stated family income, their student athlete was in a higher grade level, and if their student athlete had a history of concussion.ConclusionsA number of factors are associated with higher self-reported completion of mandated concussion education, identifying a gap. Further investigation is necessary to ensure all student athletes and their parent/guardian are educated about concussion.

AbstractBovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a frequent disease concern in dairy cattle and is most commonly diagnosed in young dairy heifers. The impact of BRD is highly variable, depending on the accuracy and completeness of detection, effectiveness of treatment, and on-farm culling practices. Consequences include decreased rate of weight gain, a higher culling risk either as heifers or as cows, delayed age at first service, delayed age at first calving, and in some cases, lower future milk production. In this data set of 104,100 dairy replacement heifers from across the USA, 36.6% had one or more cases diagnosed within the first 120 days of age with the highest risk of new cases occurring prior to weaning. Comparison of the raising cost for heifers with BRD and those without a recorded history of BRD resulted in an estimated cost per incident case occurring in the first 120 days of age of $252 or $282, depending upon whether anticipated future milk production differences were considered or not. Current market conditions contributed to a cost estimate that is significantly higher than previously published estimates, driven in part by the losses associated with selective culling of a subset of heifers that experienced BRD.
