Abstract Background: Forced migration has been shown to have a negative impact on family dynamics, parenting and the parent-child relationship. Parental support programmes aim to strengthen family functioning and the parent-child relationship and to promote the mental health of children and parents. However, there is a lack of knowledge on how parenting support programmes can be implemented for newly arrived immigrant parents. This process evaluation, therefore, describes the implementation of a successful parenting programme for immigrant parents from Somalia and identifies key components in the implementation process.Method: This process evaluation considered context, implementation and mechanism of impact, in accordance with the Medical Research Councils guidance. Data were collected through focus group discussions, a questionnaire, attendance lists, field and reflection notes, and observations of the sessions. The data were then analysed using content analysis and descriptive statistics. Results: The findings showed that of the 60 parents who were invited to the parenting programme, 58 participated in the sessions. The study showed that involving key individuals in the early stage of the implementation facilitated reaching the Somali-born parents in the parenting programme. To retain the participants in the programme, parents were offered free transportation. The programme was implemented and delivered as intended. A majority of the parents were satisfied with the programme, and they reported increased knowledge about children’s rights and the support they might seek from social services. Conclusions: This study illustrates how a parenting support programme can be implemented for Somali-born parents and provides guidance on how to engage and attract immigrant parents to participate in parenting support programmes.

This study therefore aimed to increase knowledge about which strategies could be useful to implement a parenting support programme for immigrant parents from Somalia with special focus on how to reach and retain the target group. Methods: The study was an explorative study with focus on the process initiated by the implementation strategy. Both qualitative and quantitative data were used. Data were collected through focus group discussions, a questionnaire, attendance lists, field and reflection notes, and observations of the sessions. The data were then analysed through inductive and deductive analysis. Results: The findings showed that of the 60 parents who were invited to the parenting programme, 58 participated in the sessions. This process evaluation emphasises the importance of considering contextual factors such as building trust and involving the community when implementing parenting programmes through social services. The implementation strategies employed in the programme facilitated the engagement and retention of the parents in the programme. Group leaders delivered the intervention according to the manual. Parents were satisfied with the programme and reported having confidence in seeking support from social services. Conclusions: This study not only illustrates how a parenting support programme can be implemented for Somali-born parents but also provides guidance on how to engage and attract immigrant parents to participate in parenting support programmes.

Social networking sites, first embraced by youth, have become increasingly popular among older generations. With more parents joining the sites, young people today are likely to encounter their parents on these platforms. However, there is limited information about how youth respond to the changing landscape, especially during the transition to a residential college, when parental support is particularly important but parent-child interaction may be disrupted by geographical distance. Drawing on literature of college transition, youth’s relationship with parents, and “context collapse,” this study explores how college freshmen react to parents’ participation in Facebook. Fifty-one semistructured interviews were conducted with 28 first-year students attending a major residential U.S. university (age M = 18.14, SD = 0.45; 50% female; 75% White, 11% multiethnic, 7% Asian, and 7% Latino). Findings showed that college freshmen overwhelmingly accepted parents and family adults as their Facebook Friends and offered them equal access as that offered to peers. Facebook provided a space for college freshmen and parents to bond and express affections, although freshmen sometimes considered family adults as being overresponsive or overreactive to Facebook posts. The implications of “friending” parents on Facebook for college freshmen’s privacy negotiation, parent-child relationship, and identity development are discussed.

Background: The family is an important setting in the promotion of child health. The parent–child relationship affects the social and health development of children, and children’s healthy behaviors are associated with positive parenting strategies. The parent–child relationship is bi-directional and the connection between parenting and child health is complex. However, few parenting interventions work with parents and children together, and more knowledge is needed on how to develop and implement interventions promoting healthy parent–child relationships. Focusing on a family cooking class program, this study addresses how community initiatives engaging parents and children together can contribute to integrating parenting support with local health promotion. Methods: Participant-driven photo-elicited interviews (nine families), focus group evaluations (nine parents/14 children) and observations during cooking classes (10 classes) were applied to analyze the tools and mechanisms that can support positive parenting. Results: The study found that visual, practical and sensory learning techniques, applied in a context-sensitive learning environment that ensured guidance, safety and a friendly social atmosphere, contributed to positive parent–child interaction and bonding. Conclusion: The cooking program facilitated parenting practices that support child involvement and autonomy. Thus, the program constituted an effective intervention to strengthen parent–child relationships and positive parenting.

Abstract:The family plays a crucial role throughout the child’s life, being responsible for raising him/her according to certain values, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors accepted both in the family and respective society/culture. Specifically, parent-child relationship is proved to affect interpersonal skills and relationships, behaviors, academic achievement and professional, amongst others. Research shows that for a healthy, positive, and adaptive development, a close, warm, supportive, and accepting parent-child relationship should have place. In this research, it was aimed to analyze parent–child relationships in a very specific and idiosyncratic context that has been under lots of recent economic, social, cultural, and, we assume, familiar changes and that has been understudied: United Arab Emirates. Concretely, we explored Emirati parents’ perceptions on seven main dimensions of parent–child relationships: parental support and satisfaction, involvement, communication, limiting setting, autonomy and role orientation. The participants were 122 Emirati parents, mostly mothers (73.8%) and married (96.3%), with ages between 21 and 63 years old (M=35.98, SD= 9.172), and with different levels of education (50% of the parents have a bachelor degree). The instrument used was the Parent-Child Relationship Inventory (PCRI), a standardized instrument published by the Western Psychological Services that integrates 78 items with a 4-point agreement Likert scale, divided by the dimensions previously presented plus a validity indicator (social desirability). All the questionnaires were individually administered, and descriptive and correlational analyses were performed to understand Emirati parents’ attitudes towards their children and explore how the PCRI dimensions interrelate. Overall, Emirati parents perceive themselves as satisfied, involved and communicative with their children, meanwhile they face some difficulties in establishing limits and promoting autonomy, and tend to accept and apply within their families traditional gender roles. Esta investigación analizó las relaciones entre padres y hijos en un contexto muy peculiar tras muchos cambios economicos, sociales, culturales y familiares, que han sido poco estudiadas: los EAU. En concreto, hemos explorado las percepciones de los padres en siete dimensiones de las relaciones entre padres e hijos: apoyo y satisfacción de los padres, participación, comunicación, establecimiento de límites, autonomía y orientación del rol parental. Fueron inquiridos 122 personas, en su mayoría madres (73,8%), casados (96,3%), con edades entre 21 y 63 años (M=35.98, SD=9,172), y con diferentes niveles de educación (50% de los padres tienen un título de grado). Se utilizó el Parent-Child Relationship Inventory (PCRI), un instrumento estandarizado publicado por Western Psychological Services que integra 78 items con una escala de acuerdo Likert de 4 puntos, entre las dimensiones anteriormente presentadas, además de un indicador de validez (deseabilidad social). Todos los cuestionarios fueron administrados individualmente, y análisis descriptivas y de correlación se realizaron para comprender las actitudes de los padres a sus hijos y explorar cómo las dimensiones del PCRI se interrelacionan. En general, los padres se perciben como satisfechos, participativos y comunicativos con sus hijos, mientras enfrentan algunas dificultades en el establecimiento de límites y la promoción de autonomía, y tienden a aceptar y aplicar dentro de sus familias los roles de género tradicionales. Despite extant research suggesting the important role of family in supporting youth with disabilities (e.g., learning disabilities) making the transition to university, family relational influences on youth with mental illness undergoing this transition remains unclear. Adopting a family resilience perspective, this mixed-methods study aimed to examine (a) how parent-child relationship factors relate to youths’ mental illness symptoms and well-being and (b) youth and parent perspectives on how parents can best support youth in this transition. A total of 225 youth with mental illness (aged 17–23, M = 18.43, SD = 0.91, 87% white) completed questionnaires assessing parent-child relationship satisfaction, depressive and anxiety symptoms, and life satisfaction. For 22 of these youth, a parent (aged 45–57, M = 49.77, SD = 3.57, 100% white) completed questionnaires assessing caregiver burden and reward. Parents (and their child) completed written responses addressing what youth most need from parents during this transition. Parent-child relationship factors were moderately associated with youth mental illness and well-being. Thematic analysis indicated much agreement and some difference between youth and caregivers on the aspects of parental support most valued during this transition. Implications for supporting such youth as they adapt to university are discussed.

The parent-child relationship often becomes challenging during the period of adolescence and it is community-based organisations, which take on the role of educating parents to improve the parent-adolescent relationship. The contribution of these interventions or programmes is not documented in South Africa. The James House BEST Proactive Parenting Programme prepares parents to manage the challenging behaviours of their adolescents. This was a qualitative study exploring the experiences of 24 parents living in at-risk resource-constrained communities who had attended the training workshops. Four themes emerged from the data (a) experiences of attending the proactive parenting workshops; (b) meaning of being a parent; (c) approaches to parenting and (d) the role of the father. In general, parents had a very positive experience and found that their relationships with their adolescents had improved. In particular, the results suggest that children require parental support, guidance, and parental involvement.

AbstractNon-voluntary migration has been demonstrated to have an impact on family relationships as a result of children acculturating to the host country faster than their parents. Studies have reported on immigrant parents’ perceptions of their parenting in host countries. However, less is known about how both children and parents view and make sense of their relationships in new contexts. This exploratory qualitative study aims to capture the dialectical processes in parent-child relationships among Somali families in Sweden. Data were collected using focus group discussions with youth (n = 47) and their parents (n = 33). The data were analysed using a thematic analysis. Two themes, each with three themes of their own, were identified from the analysis: finding a balance between hierarchical and egalitarian relationships and sharing of spaces. Youth and parents described different factors, including contextual changes, generational gaps, peer pressure and lack of a father figures, as affecting their relationships with each other and sometimes creating conflicts between them. Both perceived themselves as active agents in contributing to family life after migrating to Sweden. In general, the youth expressed their emotional needs, the motivations desired from their parents and their desire to be equally treated as sons and daughters. Overall, this study demonstrates that there is a need to offer immigrant families culturally tailored parenting support programmes, thereby strengthening parent-child relationships.
