Abstract In realistic environments, there often appears the concurrence of base excitation and blowing wind. Harvesting both vibration energy and wind energy by an unique harvester is attractive. In this paper, we proposed a harvester integrating bi-stability and galloping to realize this aim. The nonlinear dynamical model of the bistable energy harvester under concurrent wind and base excitations is established. The galloping effects on the responses are explored based on the established model, for both harmonic and random excitations. The corresponding experiments are conducted to validate the theoretical prediction. The experimental results are consistent with the simulation results. At a wind speed of U=2 m/s, the bandwidth of large-amplitude inter-well motion of the bi-stable energy harvester is extended by about 18.5%. The critical random excitation level for snap-through is reduced by 58% and the total output voltage at random excitation is increased by 53.4%. Thus, the harvester could scavenge the wind and vibration energies at a high efficiency. These conclusions could be helpful for improving the harvesting efficiency in the real environment.

Existing piezoelectric vibration energy harvesting circuits require auxiliary power for the switch control module and are difficult to adapt to broadband piezoelectric vibration energy harvesters. This paper proposes a self-powered and low-power enhanced double synchronized switch harvesting (EDSSH) circuit. The proposed circuit consists of a low-power follow-up switch control circuit, reverse feedback blocking-up circuit, synchronous electric charge extraction circuit and buck-boost circuit. The EDSSH circuit can automatically adapt to the sinusoidal voltage signal with the frequency of 1 to 312.5 Hz that is output by the piezoelectric vibration energy harvester. The switch control circuit of the EDSSH circuit works intermittently for a very short time near the power extreme point and consumes a low amount of electric energy. The reverse feedback blocking-up circuit of the EDSSH circuit can keep the transmission efficiency at the optimal value. By using a charging capacitor of 1 mF, the charging efficiency of the proposed EDSSH circuit is 1.51 times that of the DSSH circuit.

In order to improve vibration energy harvesting, this paper designs an arc-shaped piezoelectric bistable vibration energy harvester (ABEH). The bistable configuration is achieved by using magnetic coupling, and the nonlinear magnetic force is calculated. Based on Lagrangian equation, piezoelectric theory, Kirchhoff’s law, etc., a complete theoretical model of the presented ABEH is built. The influence of the nonlinear stiffness terms, the electromechanical coupling coefficient, the damping, the distance between magnets, and the load resistance on the dynamic response and the energy harvesting performance of the ABEH is numerically explored. More importantly, experiments are designed to verify the energy harvesting enhancement of the ABEH. Compared with the non-magnet energy harvester, the ABEH has much better energy harvesting performance.
