Abstract This empirical study examines the endogenous relationship between carbon emission (CO2), financial development, renewable energy, globalization, and institutional quality in 64 belt and road initiative countries (BRI) using a two-step system generalized method of moments (GMM) approach with panel data over the period 2003 to 2018. Furthermore, this study used (Dumitrescu & Hurlin, 2012) causality test to estimate the variables’ causal relationship. The results indicate that financial development significantly increases CO2 emissions and causes environmental degradation in BRI countries. However, renewable energy and globalization mitigate CO2 emission and improve the quality of the environment. Institutional quality was found to be positive in correlation with CO2 emission and indicates bad governance, corruption, weak bureaucracy, and improper implementation of environmental laws cause environmental degradation. Further, the study also reports a bidirectional relationship of financial development, renewable energy, and institutional quality with CO2 emission and a unidirectional causality running from globalization to CO2 emission in BRI countries. This study offers insight to policymakers to restructure the financial system, energy consumption pattern, and global integration and to improve institutions’ quality for a sustainable environment and the economy at the national and regional levels.

Abstract This study explores the moderating power of institutional quality on carbon emission through renewable energy consumption, foreign direct investment, economic growth and financial development in the globe for the period of 2002 to 2019. By using two Step System Generalized Method of Moments, the results illustrate that renewable energy usage and foreign direct investment inflow enhance environmental quality while financial development and economic growth lowers environmental quality in the panel. The results shows that quality institutions in countries are still not yet adequate to defend the harmful impact of every environmental factor and protect environment however, the interaction term of institutional quality confirms the significant moderating effect of all explanatory variables on environmental quality in the panel. The findings also confirm the existence of Environmental Kuznets Curve and evidence the pollution halo hypothesis. The findings of this paper can be useful for policy makers whereas conducting stricter environmental regulation.

This paper aims to discover the asymmetry impacts and co-integration between gross domestic product, financial development, energy use and environmental degradation by featuring institutional quality covering the Malaysia economy during the period from 1984 until 2017 using a nonlinear auto-regressive distributed lag model. The results confirm the existence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis for both linear and nonlinear analyses, thus verifying the relevance of symmetric and asymmetric EKC hypotheses for Malaysia. Further, this study verifies the attributes of financial development and institutional quality that mitigates the concern on CO2 emissions, but contradicting results were produced on energy use. The implication of this finding provides new guidelines for Malaysia authorities to consider the asymmetries in formulating environment-related policies to maintain environmental quality and achieve their sustainable development goals.

The aim of this study is threefold; first, the study investigates the symmetric impact of trade openness, financial development, and institutional quality on environmental degradation and environmental sustainability. Second, the study examines the asymmetric relationship between financial development, institutional quality, and environmental degradation. Third, the study examines the asymmetric relationship between financial development, institutional quality, and environmental sustainability. For this purpose, the study utilized the data of Pakistan from 1996 to 2018. The study applied Augmented Dickey–Fuller (ADF), Phillips Parron (PP) and Zivote, and Andrews unit root test to check the properties of stationarity of the data. This study applied the Auto Regressive Distributive Lags (ARDL) model to investigate symmetric relationships while the Non-Linear Auto Regressive Distributive Lag Model (NARDL) approach is utilized to investigate the asymmetric relationship among variables. ARDL bounds testing approach utilized to investigate long-run co-integration while short-run dynamics have been investigated by applying the error correction method (ECM). This study found the significant long-run symmetric and asymmetric association of institutional quality (IQ) and financial development (FD) with environmental degradation (ED) and environmental sustainability. However, IQ- has an insignificant association with environmental sustainability. Moreover, dynamic multiplier analysis indicates that positive shock to FD and IQ has a stronger impact on environmental degradation while a positive or negative shock to FD; both have a stronger impact on environmental sustainability. However, a positive or negative shock to IQ has a smaller impact on environmental sustainability. Moreover, the study also found a significant long-run symmetric association of trade openness with environmental degradation and environmental sustainability. This study suggests that the quality of institutions, financial development, and trade openness is necessary to enhance the quality of the environment.

Abstract The use of renewable energy improves environmental quality by reducing carbon emission and influence economics growth where carbon emission also effect economic growth of a country. The economic theory of tourism also indicates that tourism development enhance economic growth though spillovers as well contribute to climate change. The inflow of FDI and financial development enhance economic growth however its also effect environmental quality. Based on the ongoing debate, the present research trying attempts to explore the effect of CO2 emission and renewable energy consumption, FDI and financial development on economic growth in different income grouped countries to know whether these impacts are the same for the low income, middle income and high income countries on economic growth? Using panel data for high income, low income & middle income countries for the period of 1980–2018, the current study found that all variables effect economic growth significantly where FDI and carbon emission are positive while renewable energy consumption and financial development are negative for economic growth in the whole sample while its differ in the income groups. These studies have shown that these variables are not the same as the economic growth of economic growth and different income groups are not the same, but it changes. In addition, the foundation of this study has a great deal of recommendations for income Group economic decision make-up.

This paper aims to investigate coal consumption and environmental sustainability in South Africa by examining the role of financial development and globalization by using a dataset covering the period from 1980 to 2017. The study utilized the Auto-regressive Distributed Lag Model (ARDL) approach in addition to the Bayer and Hank combined co-integration, fully modified Ordinary least squares (FMOLS), and Dynamic ordinary least Squares (DOLS). The study further utilized the frequency domain causality test to capture the causal linkage between the series. The advantage of the frequency domain causality is that it can capture causal linkages between series at different periods. The Bayer and Hanck co-integration and ARDL bounds tests reveal co-integration among the series. The empirical findings based on the ARDL long-run estimation reveal that a 1% increase in coal consumption increases environmental degradation by 1.077%, while a 1% increase in financial development decreases the environmental degradation by 0.973%. Furthermore, a 1% increase in economic growth decreases environmental quality by 1.449%. The outcomes of the FMOLS and DOLS approaches also provide supportive evidence for the ARDL long-run results. Furthermore, the results of the frequency domain causality test reveal that at a significance level of 1%, coal consumption Granger causes CO2 emissions at different frequencies, while financial development Granger causes CO2 emissions in the long run and short run at a significance level of 10%. In terms of policy suggestions, South Africa should embrace policies that encourage energy consumers to shift toward renewable energy. Furthermore, financial reforms should be implemented to curb environmental degradation

Abstract We analyse how the financial development and green energy use are linked to the countries of South Asia from 1990 to 2018. Domestic credit to the private sector and renewable energy consumption is being used in this paper as indicators of financial development and the use of renewable energy. On the indication of cross-sectional dependency among the variables of the models, we apply second generation panel unit root tests and cointegration tests to check the stationarity properties and long-run cointegration relation among the variables. We find that variables are stationary at the first difference, and long-run cointegration exists. By applying robust dynamic heterogeneous and cross-section augmented estimators, we find that increase in GDP increases renewable energy consumption by 1.56-0.50%; however reduces by 0.07-0.03% after certain thresholds. Furthermore, increase in financial development, on average, reduces the propensity of renewable energy consumption by 0.15-0.07% in the long-run. On the other hand, the Dumitrescu-Hurlin panel causality test shows a unidirectional relationship from GDP to financial development and financial development to renewable energy consumption but not vice versa. We suggest that the selected countries revisit and restructure the renewable energy policy and emphasise institutional reforms to strengthen renewable energy development in the upcoming years.

This research offers a new perceptive of the dynamic connection between CO2 and globalization, technological innovation (TI), economic growth, and renewable energy (REN) consumption in Spain. The current research applied the wavelet tools to assess these interconnection utilizing data stretching from 1980 to 2018. The outcomes of these analyses disclose that the association among the series evolves over frequency and time. The current analysis uncovers notable wavelet coherence and strong lead and lag connections in the frequency domain, whereas the time domain indicates inconsistent correlations among the variables of interest. The outcomes of the wavelet analysis from the economic perspective affirm that in the short and medium term, globalization, economic growth, and TI contribute to environmental degradation; however, in the long term, globalization, economic growth, and TI do not contribute to the degradation of the environment. Moreover, at different frequencies, REN consumption helps mitigate environmental degradation in Spain. Furthermore, the spectral causality test unveiled that in the long term, REN utilization, globalization, TI, and economic growth can predict CO2 emissions in Spain.
