AbstractObjectiveChildhood cancer survivors (CCS) have been shown to practise suboptimal dietary intake and may benefit from nutrition interventions during and after treatment. Cooking classes have become popular for encouraging healthy eating behaviours in community-based programming and academic research; however, literature on teaching cooking classes in CCS is limited. The purpose of the present study was to address the development and implementation of classes for CCS based on a recently developed framework of healthy cooking behaviour.DesignA conceptual framework was developed from a systematic literature review and used to guide healthy cooking classes for CCS in different settings.SettingOne paediatric cancer hospital inpatient unit, one paediatric cancer in-hospital camp programme and two off-site paediatric cancer summer camp programmes.SubjectsOne hundred and eighty-nine CCS of varying ages and thirteen parents of CCS.ResultsSeventeen classes were taught at camps and seven classes in the hospital inpatient unit. Healthy cooking classes based on the conceptual framework are feasible and were well received by CCS.ConclusionsCooking classes for CCS, both at the hospital and at camp, reinforced the principles of the conceptual framework. Future trials should assess the dietary and anthropometric impact of evidence-based healthy cooking classes in CCS.

Purpose This paper aims to propose an approach by human and material resources combination to reduce hospitals crowding. Hospitals crowding is becoming a serious problem. Many research works present several methods and approaches to deal with this problem. However, to the best of the authors’ knowledge – after a deep reading of literature – in all the proposed approaches, human and material resources are studied separately while they must be combined (to a given number of material resources an optimal number of human resources must be assigned and vice versa) to reflect reality and provide better results. Design/methodology/approach Hospital inpatient unit is chosen as framework. This unit crowding reduction is carried out by its capacity increasing. Indeed, inpatient unit modeling is performed to find the adequate combinations of human and material resources numbers insuring this unit stability and providing optimal service rates. At first, inpatient unit is modeled using queuing networks and considering only two resources (beds and nurses). Then, the obtained service rate formula is improved by including other resources and parameters using Baskett, Chandy, Muntz and Palecios (BCMP) queuing networks. This work is applied to “Princess Lalla Meryem” hospital inpatient unit. Findings Results are patients’ average number reduction by an average (in each block) of three patients, patients’ average waiting time reduction by an average of 9.98 h and non-admitted patients (to inpatient wards) access percentage of 39.26 per cent on average. Originality/value Previous works focus their studies on either human resources or material resources. Only a few works study both resources types, but separately. The context of those studies does not meet the real hospital context (where human resources are combined with material resources). Therefore, the provided results are not very reliable. In this paper, an approach by human and material resources combination is proposed to increase inpatient unit care capacity. Indeed, this approach consists of developing inpatient unit service rate formula in terms of human and material resources numbers.

Introduction: This study aimed to determine the application of Patient Safety Goals (PSGS) - according to formal regulation of WHO Patient Safety and Joint Commission International (JCI) that set by Ministry of Health Act - in Inpatient Unit of Ciracas General Hospital. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in May-June 2017 through qualitative approach. The FGDs were conducted with nurses who were served in the inpatient unit, while in-depth interview was conducted to the informants by considering positions, duties and functions, and knowledge of Ciracas Hospital. Results: This study obtains indicators of PSGS that have not well-fully run in the Ciracas General Hospital inpatient unit. There was one indicator of PSGS which was PSGS 4; surely of fits procedure, that not entirely asses as of its infrastructure had not finished build. Fostering patient safety culture and to follow patient safety goals framework are the essential thing to be improved in inpatient unit. Conclusion: Patient safety in Ciracas General Hospital has become the genuine concern after this healthcare facility was improved from a primary healthcare facility before. However, there were several aspects that had no change with this healthcare facility transformation including building to focus on health care delivered.

This study discusses how patient satisfaction with services and availability of medical facilities and medicines in the inpatient unit of the West Sulawesi Provincial Hospital, in terms of indicators of completeness of medical equipment and laboratory services so that they do not need to be sent to other hospitals, indicators of the availability of medicines in hospital pharmacy, indicator of length of service time at hospital dispensary and indicator of service for hospital dispensary officers. The method used in this research is descriptive method with quantitative approach. The population in this study were 2874 patients treated at the West Sulawesi Provincial Hospital. The sample in this study using accidental sampling technique, so that samples of this study amounted to 97 people. Data collection techniques used in this study questionnaires, interviews, review of documents and documentation. Data analysis using frequency distribution tables and percentage analysis. The results showed that the percentage of patient satisfaction with the service and availability of medical facilities and medicines in the inpatient unit of the West Sulawesi Provincial Hospital in terms of indicators of completeness of medical equipment and laboratory services, so there was no need to be sent to other hospitals by 66.2%, indicator the availability of medicines in hospital dispensaries was 67.4%, the indicator of length of service time at hospital dispensaries was 76.1% and the indicator of service for hospital dispensaries was 75.7%. And the results of calculation of the percentage indicator of all items obtained average value score of 71.3%. Overall the service and the availability of medical facilities and medicines in the hospital inpatient units of West Sulawesi province has been able to meet the expectations of patients.

The objective was to investigate the perception of nurses, nursing assistants and patients about nursing care at a general hospital psychiatric unit. Exploratory study with 16/20 nursing professionals and 27/84 patients from the psychiatric inpatient unit of a general hospital. Interviews were based on guiding questions about the nursing care in said unit. Thematic content analysis was adopted. The subjects acknowledge that nursing promotes the recovery of patients, that it is essential during hospitalization, and defend that working in psychiatry requires a taste and profile for it. The patients value warmth, attention, serenity, good mood, patience, concern, presence, promptness, respect and responsibility. The professionals value affection, dedication, effort, patience, security and serenity. Professionals and patients wonder if changes in nursing care during hospitalization stimulate independence/autonomy for discharge or reflect carelessness. In conclusion, nursing care is essential during psychiatric hospitalization, but it requires that professionals like it and have the right profile.

Abstract. Background: Concerns exist regarding the perceived risks of conducting suicide-focused research among an acutely distressed population. Aims: The current study assessed changes in participant distress before and after participation in a suicide-focused research study conducted on a psychiatric inpatient unit. Method: Participants included 37 veterans who were receiving treatment on a psychiatric inpatient unit and completed a survey-based research study focused on suicide-related behaviors and experiences. Results: Participants reported no significant changes in self-reported distress. The majority of participants reported unchanged or decreased distress. Reviews of electronic medical records revealed no behavioral dysregulation and minimal use of as-needed medications or changes in mood following participation. Limitations: The study's small sample size and veteran population may limit generalizability. Conclusion: Findings add to research conducted across a variety of settings (i.e., outpatient, online, laboratory), indicating that participating in suicide-focused research is not significantly associated with increased distress or suicide risk.
