An attempt has been made to enhance the photocatalytic activity of CeO2 for visible light assisted decoloration of methylene blue (MB) dye in aqueous solutions by β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). The inclusion complexation patterns between host and guest (i.e., β-CD and MB) have been confirmed with UV–visible spectral data. The interaction between CeO2 and β-CD has also been characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis. The photocatalytic activity of the catalyst under visible light was investigated by measuring the photodegradation of MB in aqueous solution. The effects of key operational parameters such as initial dye concentration, initial pH, CeO2 concentration as well as illumination time on the decolorization extents were investigated. Among the processing parameters, the pH of the reaction solution played an important role in tuning the photocatalytic activity of CeO2. The maximum photodecoloration rate was achieved at basic pH (pH 11). Under the optimum operational conditions, approximately 99.6% dye removal was achieved within 120 min. The observed results indicate that the decolorization of the MB followed a pseudo-first order kinetics.

The photocatalytic activity of Fe/ZnO/SiO2catalysts under visible-light irradiation for the degradation of methylene blue was evaluated. The effect of pH, illumination time, amount of catalyst loaded, and initial dye concentration on the degradation efficiency of methylene blue was investigated. The results reveal that the optimum photocatalytic oxidation conditions of methylene blue are as follows:pH=4and illumination time is 30 min, the amount of catalyst loading is 0.075 g/L and 50 ppm methylene blue dye concentration. Under these conditions, the removal efficiency of methylene blue was 100%.

In order to improve the photocatalytic activity, Co was successfully loaded into Ag3VO4 by using impregnation process. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The XRD and SEM–EDS analyses revealed that Co ion was dispersed on Ag3VO4. The DRS results indicated that the absorption edge of the Co–Ag3VO4 catalyst shifted to longer wavelength. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of Co–Ag3VO4 for Methylene Blue(MB) dye degradation under visible light irradiation was due to its wider absorption edge and higher separation rate of photo-generated electron and holes. In the experimental conditions, it is demonstrated that the MB was effectively degraded by more than 95% within 40 min when the Co–Ag3VO4 catalyst was calcined at 300°C with 1 wt.% Co content.

Abstract TiO2-related materials or processes for 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) degradation either under UV or visible light irradiations with key operational conditions was systematically reviewed in the beginning of this study. Cerium (Ce), which was neighboring transition metal elements of titanium (Ti), were individually doped with TiO2 via various methods. Three synthetic parameters in the two approaches were examined their significance by using experimental designs. It was found that the 2-CP can be 100% removal within 4-h irradiation by visible light in the synthetic condition of 0.35 mol.% Ce, 0.15 vol.% nitric acid and calcined at 600oC. Moreover, effects of three operation parameters of the as-prepared catalysts were further investigated. The most efficient condition obtained was 3 g·L− 1 catalysts at initial pH and 2-CP concentration of 7 and 10 mg·L− 1, respectively. A critical parameter, pHpzc of undoped and Ce-doped TiO2, were also determined. In addition, surface area, pore volume and size of both TiO2–based catalysts were found affected by the calcination temperatures and consequently degradation efficiency. The presenting results and mini-review were facilitated the development and applications of TiO2 in the degradation of 2-CP under lower energy radiations.

The yttrium based metal-organic framework (MOF) Y-PTC was synthesized by the solvothermal method using perylene as the linker and yttrium as metal ion. This study aims to assess the photocatalytic activity of yttrium-perylenetetracarboxylate (Y-PTC) metal-organic framework (MOF) toward methylene blue and methyl orange under visible light irradiation. The results of the FTIR analysis showed that Y-PTC MOF had a different structure and composition from its precursor (Na4PTC). The Y-PTC MOF has a bandgap energy value of 2.20 eV with a surface area of 47.7487 m2/g. The SEM-EDS analysis showed an elemental composition of yttrium, carbon, and oxygen, were 6.9%, 72.1% and 20.7%, respectively. Furthermore, Y-PTC MOF was able to adsorb dyes at the optimum by 78.10% and 35.57% toward methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) at the dispersion period of 60 mins. Y-PTC MOF exhibited photocatalytic activity towards the degradation of methylene blue and methyl orange under visible light irradiation. The addition of H2O2 inhibited Y-PTC photocatalytic activity towards MO degradation from 50.89% to 26.38%. In contrast to MO, the addition of H2O2 had a positive effect on MB, which increased the degradation from 87.56% to 91.65%. Therefore, Y-PTC MOF possessed the potential of a photocatalyst material in dyes degradation under visible light irradiation.

In this report, the results from a study on the influence of operational parameters on TiO2 photocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction under an ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) illumination are presented. The results indicated that the TiO2 was found to be active for CO2 reduction with CH3OH as the major products, while other minor products (CO, CH4, and C2H4) were also detected. In addition, the formation of such reduction products was obviously influenced by the operational parameters. Under this study, the optimum operational parameters for CO2 reduction at 298 °K were determined to be: NaOH concentration 0.2 M, TiO2 dosage 2 g/L, volume of the reaction media 75 mL, the pressure of system 800 kPa. It was also found that the increase in UV-vis illumination time have increased the yield of product formation. A possible reaction pathway for the formation of the reduction products is also discussed.
