AbstractThe synchronous or metachronous occurrence of two tumours of the salivary glands in one patient is rare. These are mainly benign and of the same histological type. Here we report a 56-year-old man who developed a mucoepidermoid tumour of the left parotid gland four years after diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the right submandibular gland. This combination of neoplasms has not to our knowledge been reported before.

Abstract Abstract 4596 Background: Localized Laryngeal Amyloidosis (LA) is a rare condition. There is limited understanding of its natural history. Our aim is to report the clinical evolution of a patient diagnosed with localized LA. Methods: Case report. Results: In May 2002, a 43-year-old gentleman presented with hoarseness and a CT scan of the neck showed a thickening of the right vocal cord with a mass that measured 2.9 × 1.2 cm in widest diameter. The patient had this mass removed surgically and the pathology showed a positive Congo red staining and a positive birefringence under polarized light, diagnostic of amyloidosis. No evidence of systemic amyloidosis or an overt B-cell lymphoma was found in this patient. Patient lost follow-up until October 2008 when he was found to have soft tissue induration around the left false vocal cord area. The biopsy showed again amyloidosis. Conclusions: LA recurrences can manifest several years after initial diagnosis. Long-term follow-up is essential. Disclosures: No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Congenital unilateral agenesis of the parotid gland is a rare condition with only few cases reported in the literature. A review of 21 cases in the available literature is presented in this article. We report on a further case of a 34-year-old woman with agenesis of the left parotid gland and lipoma of the right cheek. Clinicopathological characteristics of described cases in the literature were discussed.

Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a malignant tumor formed by monoclonal abnormal proliferation of plasma cells, which is mainly characterized by localized masses and very rare in the larynx, particularly in the false vocal cord. We present a larynx EMP that arises from the false cord without systematic involvement. After surgical resection, the patient received adjuvant radiotherapy and was recurrence-free during the 8-month follow-up.

AbstractSolitary extramedullary plasmacytomas are uncommon malignant neoplasms with a great predilection for the upper respiratory tract. Extramedullary plasmacytoma involving the parotid gland is an extremely rare condition. This report describes the case of a primary extramedullary plasmacytoma arising in the right parotid gland of a 63-year-old man. A review of the literature reveals that this disease has generally a good prognosis, provided that multiple myeloma has been excluded. The treatment of choice should be surgical excision followed by radiotherapy, although from this study there is insufficient evidence to suggest that this is more effective than surgery alone. All patients must have regular long-term follow-up to monitor for recurrence or dissemination, in which event chemotherapy may be considered in addition to the other treatment modalities.

AbstractA case is presented of multiple acinic cell carcinoma, occurring synchronously in the left parotid gland and in the right submaxillary gland of a 75-year-old male patient. Fourteen cases of primary multiple acinic cell carcinoma have previously been reported, all bilateral parotid gland tumours. To our knowledge this is the first report of extraparotid localization of an acinic cell carcinoma in a patient presenting multiple salivary gland tumours. The histologic and ultrastructural characteristics of the tumours are described and a review of the literature is given.

AbstractA case of malignant pleomorphic adenoma of the left parotid gland which metastasized to the kidney and multiple subcutaneous sites is presented. The patient presented as an acute emergency due to spontaneous rupture of the kidney containing metastasis. All the distant metastatic lesions were confined to the right side of the body.
