A state-of-the-art small-scale solid state forge welding machine has been fabricated for checking weldability by Shielded Active Gas Forge Welding (SAG-FW) of tubular products applicable predominantly for, but not limited to offshore Industries. Effective, fast and inexpensive welding and testing of joints make this small-scale method suitable for evaluating weldability of a material before starting regular qualification and fabrication in a full-scale welding machine normally located in spool base or offshore. The small-scale machine provides a complete package for pre-qualification studies, including assessment of welding conditions, material flow behavior, heat treatment options. However, there are considerable challenges relating to application of international standards of testing as well as interpretation and use of results in the context of large-scale welding. In this paper results from small-scale welding and weld characterization of an API 5L X65 quality are presented. First, a detailed test plan for analyzing the weld is outlined. This procedure is subsequently applied for checking the welds to be produced in the full-scale machine. Short-comings in using the small-scale process as well as the possible remedies are discussed in detail.

AbstractThe basis for the computation of the service life of the PZL M28 was the results of the full-scale fatigue tests of the structure [1]. As the PZL M28 is a commuter category airplane according to the 14 CFR Part 23 and CS-23 regulations, the test objects were: (1) wing and wing load carry-through structure, (2) empennage and attached fuselage structure. Additionally, there were fatigue tests carried out for the landing gear and other selected elements including control system elements. The aircraft load carry-through structure is metallic and the cabin is unpressurized. The fatigue tests were conducted stage-by-stage. As the tests progressed, it was possible to extend the aircraft’s target service life, applying a safe life philosophy with reference to the primary components of the load carry-through structure.This paper brings into attention selected issues related to the fatigue tests preparation (the stage following the preparation of the test plan), with focus on the wing and wing load carry-through structure.

This paper is a part of the series “Development of an Evaluation Method for Seismic Isolation Systems of Nuclear Power Facilities.” This part presents a break test plan and development of a test machine for a full-scale lead rubber bearing (LRB). Application of seismic base-isolation systems using LRBs of 1600 mm in diameter to reactor building has been considered for the purpose of enhancing seismic safety. It is important to obtain the ultimate properties of isolators in order to estimate the seismic safety margin of seismic base-isolated structures against a beyond design-basis earthquake events. Recent studies reveal that the scaled effect appears on the ultimate properties of seismic rubber bearings. However, because of the limitation of the loading capabilities of loading machines, the ultimate property of such a large scale LRBs has not been confirmed. In this study, the break tests for LRBs of 1600 mm in diameter is planned on the basis of estimation that refers to previous studies on break tests for small-scale LRBs and natural rubber bearings. The world-largest class test machine is designed and constructed to conduct static break tests for the full-scale LRBs. Furthermore, the performance of the test machine is evaluated from test results including those for break tests.
