scholarly journals Analysis of CFRP Laminates Properties under Different Layup Structure using Finite Element Analysis

Abstract. In order to study the effect of the layup structure on the static strength and low-velocity impact strength of carbon fiber/epoxy composite (CFRP) laminates, theoretical simulation analysis under different laying angles have been carried out. In this study, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) models for different CFRP laminate specimens are created using ANSYS Workbench by changing the relative volume fraction of 0°, 45° and 90° plies in each specimen and their relative location. The FEA results revealed that the increase of relative volume of 90° ply will improve the impact the impact resistance performance, while the increase of relative volume of 45° ply will take the opposite effect. Moreover, when the relative volume fraction of 0°, 45° and 90° plies are the same, the strength performance of the laminate cannot be improved by changing the thickness of the outermost layer. The study illustrated the significant effects of different stacking sequences and laying angles on the tensile and flexural failure mechanisms in composite laminates, leading to some suggestions to improve the design of composite laminates.

The aim of this research was to investigate the low-velocity impact properties of syntactic foam reinforced by warp-knitted spacer fabric (SF-WKSF). In order to discuss the effect of warp-knitted spacer fabric (WKSF) and hollow glass microballoon parameters on the impact performance of composites, eight different kinds of SF-WKSF samples were fabricated, including different WKSF surface layer structures, different spacer yarn diameters and inclination-angles, different microballoon types and contents. The low-velocity impact tests were carried out on an INSTRON 9250 HV drop-weight impact tester and the impact resistances of SF-WKSF were analyzed; it is indicated that most SF-WKSF specimens show higher peak impact force and major damage energy compared to neat syntactic foam. The results also demonstrate that the surface layer structure, inclination-angle of the spacer yarn and the volume fraction and type of microballoon have a significant influence on the low-impact performance of SF-WKSF. In addition, a finite element analysis finished with ANSYS/LS-DYNA and LS-PrePost was used to simulate the impact behaviors of SF-WKSF. The results of the finite element analysis are in agreement with the experimental results.

An aircraft structural and material response is very complex when subjected to impact. It involves both elastic and plastic deformation in instant. Nevertheless, investigating this phenomenon is challenging yet interesting. Therefore, this research attempts to investigate the effect of selected parameters variation (i.e. material type, skin thickness and impact velocity) to the resulting equivalent plastic shear strain using finite element analysis (FEA). The finite element (FE) models were developed using commercially modeling and FE software to replicate an aircraft fuselage (target) and projectile according to the experimental setup and data established by other researcher [. The current study only focuses on the materials response and deformation behavior due low velocity (30 150 m/s) impact of a blunt object to a square shape target made of Al 2024-T3 and aluminum alloy 7475 (AA 7475). In all cases (parameters variation), the resulting equivalent plastic strain has been determined and compared to the established data. It is found that the currents results are very close to the actual material response measured in experiments. This proves that simulated results are validated and the study contributed some knowledge to understanding the behaviour of the structural and material response in a low impact velocity. By varying selected parameters, the impact resistivity of the structure could be improved.
